    With episode 16, I wanted to take a look at one of the more “overlooked” elite defenses in the NFL up in Minnesota. The Vikings are absolutely LOADED with talent on every single level of their defense, with perhaps the crown jewel of them all being their incredible young box safety, Harrison Smith. The fifth-year star plays a “do it all” role in Mike Zimmer’s pressure-filled defense, and as a result he’s often seen doing literally everything from enforcing his will down on the line of scrimmage, to covering slot receivers man to man, to even bracketing wideouts deep down field as a center fielder. With my beloved Texans slated to have an absolute brawl with Smith and company early in the season, there’s no better time to get acquainted with this ultra-talented beast that awaits them in week five.
    Enjoy!

    7:44 "he hunts them down as if he resents their very existence" ....alright, you win. Your breakdown of the vikings defense and zimmer's use of smith made me really appreciate the chess side tactics of this game again. Thank you.

    If you want to know why the Vikes pass rush wasn't getting home against
    the Packers, do a video on the Packer's OL holding that never gets
    called smh

    • @brianrobinson1552
      @brianrobinson1552 8 років тому +61

      The Packers OL get away with so much holding, it's unreal. In the last 30 something years of watching NFL football, I've never seen a team get away with holding more than them. Although some might say the Patriots are bad, they actually don't hold nearly as much as anyone thinks. They do a decent job of keeping Brady upright, and he just knows how to move around in the pocket just enough to keep extending the play. GB, on the other hand, holds people from the jump, and it's damn pathetic the NFL and refs let them get away with it to glorify Rodgers on a weekly basis. They can't stand the thought of one of their poster children eating grass/turf on a constant basis, so they let them get away with it like no tomorrow.

      +Brian Robinson I'm 12 and I've only really understood football fully for 2 years I'm a vikes fan so it pisses me of when my teams OL gets called for holding constantly and sometimes not even actual holds against the packers then the fucking Packers OL gets to hold off the snap and maybe gets called for it every few weeks just damn

      HyPer FuZe I would suggest reading a book called "Personal Foul" by Tim Donaghy. It will forever change how you see pro sports... and, not in a good way. One thing he talks about, is how in professional sports, it's basically a "show". If referees call infractions like they're supposed to, it would make some of the bigger named athletes in all major sports just average, or above average.

    • @jamaaljones9268

    • @brianrobinson1552
      @brianrobinson1552 8 років тому +12

      Jamaal Jones if the refs start calling him for holding, we'll ALL know the truth. That would just signal that it was perfectly fine as long as he was a Packer, but not for any other team.

    He's a prototype "down" (or box) Safety in a Cover-3 scheme. Obviously the Vikings play a ton of single-high. In this video they're seen playing Cover-3 Match (vs 2x2 formations) and Cover-1 (man free). He does a good job of "carrying" the #2 WR vertical in Cover-3 and against 21 Personnel he's an absolute terror in the box. He makes quick reads and heads downhill RIGHT NOW! As a Cover-3 defensive coordinator this gives me wood. Only way to "expose" a guy like this is to attack him when they're playing 2-high. Most Safeties like him lack the fluidity and range to excel in 2-high. Love your channel by the way!

    They are aligning to the pass strength, they may have adjustments when the pass strength is into the boundary but that's why you see that. Typically offences won't put the majority of their immediate receivers into the boundary because it's a clustereff. When you break down your concept of boundary vs open field the pass strength is to the open side... you have the 1, 2 and 3rd immediate receiver as the back to the defensive right.

    • @tomhoward969

    How the Vikings align their boundary and field safety in regards to where the ball is placed in relation to the hash marks is identical to how Brent Venables aligns his safeties. Same goes for the LB's, DT's and DE's.
    Venables FS designation always aligns to the boundary and the SS aligns to the field. The WLB aligns to the boundary and the MLB and NLB align to the field. Where Venables differs is his CB alignment. He almost always aligns his CB like he does his safeties, one always to the boundary and one always to the field. He then fills these positions based on how he utilizes them within the scheme and play call. Usually the BCB is pressed on the opposing WR and the FCB playing off regardless of whether zone or man 2 man. He uses his safeties and DE as force players to force ball carriers back inside. The NLB and the WLB are overhang defenders. The base defense is pattern match C4 which if there are 4 WR in the pattern turns into a pseudo man to man look across the field with the NLB and ILB's looking for work while still defending their assigned zone.
    His WDE and SDE always line up on the same sides. WDE over the LT and SDE over the RT. The 1T and 3T align firstly based on where the TE is and the 3T almost always aligns to the side of the TE(4-2-5 over front) the H back (if no TE) or FB (if no TE and FB is not inline to the RB). If 2x2 in 10 personnel the 3T aligns to RB strength.

    at 11:30, is this not the same play that the Rams ran on Thursday night with Kupp in the Cobb spot? Notice how Cobb breaks open at the same time Kupp did and from what I remember, Kupp doesn't bother feinting the outside, he just cuts inside to minimize time till he can get where he needs to be.
    I just rewatched the Rams play again, not the same, but seems like McVay took the play and redesigned it with the intention of getting Kupp into position quickly by having him line up inside and just start his slant right away.

      Frank, also a Bears fan here. With what John Fox, and Vic Fangio is building, I'm becoming less and less worried about GB. Actually I realistically expect the Bears to at least split, or sweep GB going forward, as long as those two coaches are around. They both have a good history of coaching winning teams/defenses, and have a gist of what it takes to consistently nullify Aaron Rodgers. By the way, Vic Fangio's record verses Rodgers is 5-1. His only loss came in week 1 of 2015, when rookie Jeremy Langford dropped a critical 3rd down pass that would have kept the Bears ahead, and ALL of the Bears starting WRs being injured and not playing.

    I am sure he is a hard hitter but not sure how he compares to the safeties back in the day. When I was growing up, the hitters back then were Ronnie Lott, Kenny Easley, Steve Atwater, Dennis Smith, Todd Bell, Jack Tatum, Doug Plank, etc. They were scary.

    0:45 Look I love the Viking's defense, but no way they are more well rounded than the bronco's. I love the video btw. So insightful, i wish i had all the film to look at.

      They're more versatile than the Broncos. Wade Phillips' defensive scheme is much simpler than Mike Zimmer's defensive scheme. Wade takes a lot of thinking out of the equation & makes it easier for guys to be more decisive & instinctive. Zimmer on the other hand requires a lot of mental work from every player to know a hell of a lot more. They can play in any coverage because that's what Zimmer teaches them. Wade on the other hand primarily uses Cover 1 Man & is usually blitzing 5 guys on every down.

    Hey Brett just wanted to say your videos are awesome. Very informative. How do you learn so much about football? You must have studied it at some point. I'm very intrigued with learning the game better. Keep it up! Also, I would love to see some more Vikings players such as Anthony Barr or Everson Griffin.

    Amazing stuff man! Can you please explain the difference between a Sam and Will linebacker? I've never understood the designations.

    • @jgrnorthwest6625
      @jgrnorthwest6625 8 років тому

      Sam LB is the strong side linebacker. Will is the weakside linebacker. Think "S' for Strong and "W" for weak. The strong side generally refers to whatever side of the offensive formation that the TE lines up on. The Will linebacker would be on the weakside (opposite side of the TE) and the Sam would be across from, or at least on the same side as the opposing TE.
