If you have not yet tried carving pick up a piece of wood and a knife and you will truly appreciate this man's talent and skill. Thanks again mr.coates
It’s a dirty job but someone’s gotta do it lol great carving and I appreciate the poured in place chimney cap over the brick , gonna last much longer 👍
I've been subscribed to you for a while but found out today from a "top ten youtube carvers" video that you're a Newfoundlander. I thought that was pretty kool, I live in gfw so hello from a fellow newfie.
Great piece Kevin. How on earth do you get watery paint to take on top of oil. I've tried it but paint goes blotchy because water is repelled by oil. ATB.
Thanks for the video Kevin! My son Alex hasn't carved pine yet. I was going to go by my local family run lumber yard to see what they have. Anything in particular that I should ask for? I'm not a carver just an admirer of wood carving.
Danny, where I pickup my pine all I can get is 3/4” board so I have to laminate it. The kind of pine is white pine. It comes from eastern Canada. Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Somewhere around that area
@@Me-no-tell If you have the enthusiasm to attempt this carving I have the confidence in you to do an acceptable job on it. If you truly want to do it follow the steps as mr. Coates does it , there is no pattern here and he is starting off with as a guess inch and a half square stock. You sit down with your knife and piece of wood and put a couple hours a day of effort into learning how to create what you want, if your hand strength can take it. Patterns for me are for bigger creations as you can use a bandsaw or jigsaw to remove a lot of the excess wood so you do not have to carve it away. I think some people get carried away with this and even try to cut out areas such as the nose and ankles with a scroll saw. There are a huge number of books out there with patterns of wee people and if you have a Woodcraft store near you that would be a good place to look for these books. I cannot draw either but to make a pattern I take a pencil on a blank piece of paper and put in a center line and put in a crude hat and face and legs Etc and this allows me to cut off unwanted wood with the bandsaw which does save a lot of time and effort. A thousand mile journey begins one step at a time.
The carving was amazing but when you added the eyes it went to another level. Really like the big knife, what kind is it? Your talent is truly remarkable. Keep it up.
This character is fantastic. Have you done any carvings or plan on doing any of a person lying down? I've only seen one on Pinterest of a hobo sleeping.
Sledujem tie Vaše videá pán Coates a žasnem aký ste v tých figúrkach majster. Chcel by som sa spýtať aké drevo používate keď Vám idú do dreva tie nože tak ľahko. Mám kvalitné nože i dláta, dá sa s nimi holiť, ale nerežú ani lipové drevo tak ako to vidím na Vašich videách. Neviem kde robím chybu či v brúsení noža, alebo príprave /sušení/ dreva :( facebook.com/kemluf I'm watching your videos, Mr. Coates, and I'm amazed at how good you are at those figures. I would like to ask what kind of wood you use when those knives go into the wood so easily. I have quality knives and chisels, you can shave with them, but they don't even cut linden wood as I see in your videos. I don't know where I'm making a mistake or in sharpening a knife or preparing / drying / wood :( facebook.com/kemluf
Precision carving as always. Truly inspirational. And I enjoyed seeing you paint the figure. Lots for me to work on!
Thank you Richard

It is a dirty job. I just did mine then. It’s getting that time now for a fire in the morning
Hah! I had to check to make sure it was you when I didn’t see your old fish knife roughing out. Great work, as usual! 👍
Thank you Kevin. The fish knife wouldn’t have worked well on this one
Kevin another video to keep me chipping away. I like the character and picked up a few tips on painting, thanks.
The more you do it the better you get
As always, masterfully done!
Thank you

You don’t even need to speak ,it’s very clear wow thank you
Thank you

Thanks. I leave it for 10-15 mins. Then I wipe it off good and seems to work ok
Nice job Kevin, thanks for sketching out the profile first!

Thank you so much, excited to try. Any way to get a copy of the pattern? I can not draw at all.
You have to learn to draw my friend, it does not have to be perfect and this process is what makes your work unique versus Mr. Coates carving.
I don’t have a pattern as such. Sometimes I just draw a sketch on the wood and go from that. I’m not very good at drawing either
@@r22jeff LOL your funny, I have been TRYING for 74 years. either you have it, or you dont.

Kevin, do you put the oil on to achieve a certain look when painting or is it for protection ? I absolutely love your work.
I put it on more for the look than protection
The carving was amazing but when you added the eyes it went to another level. Really like the big knife, what kind is it? Your talent is truly remarkable. Keep it up.
