Dude's songs have about five times more total unique verses and lyrics than about 95% of songs; I've wondered for a long time how he remembers as many of them as he does over the course of a show. Errors are human. If you want perfect then put your iPod on repeat - same way, every time, no problem. Me? I'll be at the show.
Been crying to this song since its release in mid 90's!!! Tonight, I played it twice without a tear!!! Quite a triumph for me. Just had to say it, ya'll!!!! Thanks fer readin!!!!
PRODIGIOUSLY TALENTED! Haven't yet had the pleasure to see him live, but would drive 250 miles both ways on a school night to do so. Thank you for posting!
I have and I put him in the great story teller folk musicians. Not a great guitar player but well worth the experience, I would go back every time he is on the ticket.
I have the Billjoe Shaver CD, I got to see Billy joe and Eddie back in the day,so iknow that song it very goodI also use to go see Todd all the time back when he first was playing in Nashville
And? I'm seeing them for the first time. Others are, too. You read them as well. I don't care when they were posted, it's all just entertainment to me. Peace, brother. Have a GREAT day!
@mathprodigy All of the best musicians have messed up singing their own lyrics many times. Just do a search on youtube and you'll see many examples. Sammy Haggar, Robert Plant, Mick Jagger, Johnny Cash, etc... I'm sure you've messed up at your job a few times and still got paid. For you to say that it is "unacceptable" is hypocritical. Football players fumble, baseball players strike out, Actors forget lines, & the dude at McD's always screws up my order. It happens. Move on
I reckon if he wants to drop, add or change a stanza, he can. It's his song, after all, and he can 'screw it up' if he wants. Either way, a masterful song and story. As to the 'stoned' part? Who cares?
Their are many performers who never play a song the same and that's fine with me. If your goin to bitch about it, then just don't listen to them perform.
Todd stoned? NOOOO! Seriously, I've seen him 11 times and can attest he is totally baked here -- also in poor voice. He's extra raspy and off-key. But even on nights when he's "off" his shows are worthwhile. As for botching lyrics, he's been known to do that, especially as his catalog gets deeper. (I've heard him sing same verse to "Can't Complain" twice.) But last night in Newport, Ky., he was 100% "ON" -- in command, at ease, triumphant and definitely "Happy to Be Here." TODD SNIDER RULES
@bahilmes There is a difference. Actors are performing lines they just learned. Athletes are performing on a high physical level. McD's is not even comparable to a stage musician. This is a song. It is basically written one way. The lyrics go one way. Excuse him all you like, but botching an entire verse is uncalled for.
Guys, I realize it's his song. It sounds like he just straight up messed up. Obviously, people aren't perfect. But, if he indeed messed up, especially on something as simple as lyrics to your own song, then to me, that is just unacceptable, considering he is a professional performer getting paid to PERFORM.

I caught his show when his first cd came out. This song really got to me.

Very powerful lyrics. Beautiful and sad song. Great message.
The real world is pretty sad...✌️
Todd has written many GREAT songs...this may be his BEST!
Im glad he sang it twice. It's my favorite verse.

You should check out his song Waco Moon too. You'll like it.
No, I got it now. I used to think things had to be a certain way. I'm over it.
It's Todd's song. He can sing it any way he wants. If it's not "acceptable" to YOU, listen to someone else.
@FloatingGrin
I dont know what your talking about but 3/4 and 6/8 are the same fraction, lol
Anyone know if this show is available on DVD?
250 miles through the snow uphill both ways? 12 months a year? Like my dad had to go to get to elementary school?
He skipped the college part, and the moved back home part..
@mathprodigy Actually he skipped half the verses. WTF? Gotta be a complete version of this great song out there.
Truth go figure..
Did he just sing a verse twice? And he skipped another! Still a good song.

Those posts are like 2/3 of a year old lol
This would be a classic if he weren't so wasted
Really... you took the teeth out of it babe! The story lacks.

Is it me or does he sound stoned, he totally screwed up this song.
