One of the saddest yet most beautiful scenes of ballet. I think Giselle’s innocence was her ultimate demise. She grew up in the small village where everyone was her friend and protected by her mother all of her life. She simply didn’t know there were such terrible deception existed out in the world. When she realized she was betrayed by her beloved, her entire being shattered to tiny pieces. She went into panic, didn’t know what to trust, who was real and who wasn’t. That is why this is so scary for her. Then eventually her weak heart gives up and she dies. This is my take of the mad scene of Giselle. I cannot count how many times I’ve watched this ballet but still makes me cry every time.
I agree with most of what you say but I feel forced to comment about deception. In the modern world we are all deceived from the moment we are born. The deception is well organised and comes mostly not from individuals, but from the media. I shall not go into detail, but could illustrate and defend my comment at length and with vigour. I expect you realise that you have innocently touched a nerve; and my attack is not directed at you, but against the system. I have joined the many that have given you the 'thumbs up'.

In some versions Giselle has a heart condition and because she gets so stressed out when finding out her loved one is marrying someone else that her heart doesn't take it. In other versions she just dies of sadness. But in both of them she hallucinates when realising she has been lied to and, in my opinion, that's what this scene is all about!

"When the Shit Hits the Fan: The Ballet This is one of my favorite scenes in ballet, and Alina Cojocaru is perfect. She's the best for roles that are young and innocent (Princess Aurora, for example. Out of the damn park). I saw Marinela Nunez do this scene and it was almost...too beautiful. Too strong; too mature. She was the best Odette/Odile you're ever likely to see, but Alina is more fragile, and ultimately more heartbreaking. Her facial expressions and deconstructed movements make it cease to be a ballet for a few minutes and simply become a story. Its that kind of ability, emotional as well as physical, that makes a great artist. Also the music is so twisted in that scene. I love the complexity.
I love the emotions that both she and the guy who did Albrecht have. Some versions have Albrecht as someone who just manipulated her for the fun of it, but some have him really love her, and you can definately tell that he really loves her here.
It's a shame a good part of the audience was unable to see all the details of her interpretation, as WE can: the expression in her face, her eyes... They probably felt it all the same, though, what she imparted was all over her, A better still interpretation? I doubt it, but I will look it up! An Oscar? Yes, I agree with that! True as life, not a cerebral, learned, interpretation. Manuel Legris is up to her, also a great actor, Their Giselle PDD Act1 you posted is also the most charming and believable interpretation I have seen so far (and I have seen A LOT). Oooh!!! I recognize the ballerina who plays Giselle!! I have a video of Giselle from the Royal Ballet (I think it’s the Royal Ballet) and she’s in that one too.
In all versions, she dies, she's fragile, cardiac. When she learns the truth, she remembers all what the Prince and her were dancing at morning , becoming crazy, and wants to suicide with the sword that her 1st fiance takes immediately. Then she recognizes her mother, run into her arms, and finally go to the Prince, her heart stops brutally, she falls down. The shock was too hard for an innocent girl, 15 years old... She points to her ring finger because she thought he'd propose to her (or because he's engaged to someone else). She also goes over steps her and her love performed together previously. She's only very young and emotional and I had a thought.... because she's a poor village girl with a heart condition (albeit a beautiful one and with a strong support system), she probably made her peace with the fact she would likely never marry or find love, then was given the hope of it but had it snatched away in front of everyone in her mind (whether they understood everything or not), which would be really heart-breaking. It's clear the gentleman cares for her but he still lead her on and if you've ever been lead on, it is pretty hurtful and mind boggling, even if they did care for you. 😔 Hope this helps :)
