Great info brother. So great to hear your position on this lens. This is definitely one that's on the radar...
The 85 1.2 lens is on my wish list! 85mm is that sweet spot for portraits. Thanks for making the review!
Agreed! Thanks for watching!
Great video Tony. Im definitely that up and coming category and i got the 85mm f2 and 35mm f1.8 as well as the 24-105mm f4L with my R. I love the 85mm, but the 35mm stays on my cam most of the time right now. All amazing upgrades from my M50.
Yea for sure! That m50 is a good little camera too tho!!
@@TonyMellinger ive still got it with just 22mm f2 and 50mm f1.2 with speedbooster, awesome B cam
Thanks for this review Tony. Of course the 85 1.2 would be better but as I make close to zero on my photography the 85 f2.0 will be the right Choice for me and I have just ordered one.
Yea! That’s a perfect example of a great situation to buy the 85mm2.0! You’re going to love it!!
Been waiting on this review!
👊🏼 thanks for watching!!
@@TonyMellinger what do you think about the old school 85mm 1.8 EF lens?
Thanks, Tony, another great video..
The is so much! Thanks for watching!
I haven’t used any the RF 85’s but I use EF85 1.4 IS which is fantastic, it has a little bit of bokeh fringing aside from that it’s a dream lens. Clarity, bokeh and skin tone render is just up there.
The L -lenses has that clarity and pop which other lenses don’t have and I guess that’s what you observed with this one RF 85 f2.0 IS.
How is the 85mm f1.4 IS behaving on the R5 in video mode regarding follow focus? Is it capable of smoothly follow people? I would really like to know this.
Thanks for the video👍😎
The ef85 1.4 works better on the R5/R6 than any other camera I’ve used it with. Absolutely love it.
I have a question regarding the use of Canon R6with 85 f 1.2 L series , what is your experience Mr. Tony , is it ok in term of speed and picture quality, how do you see the value? What is your recommendations?
Haven’t played with it too much yet. I’ll keep you posted. Do you mean for photo or video?
Thanks for the video! Any thoughts on the EF 85 mm 1.8, and comparison to the RF 85 mm f2? I was just thinking just for its macro capabilities, that could be another reason to get it since you can have two purposes and uses for it. Thank you!
I have lots of experience with the EF 85mm f1.4L which is a beutiful lens. If you’re shooting on the RF systems though, I’d spring for the RF lens. They’re just so good.
You are just talking about 1.4 and 1.2 But did you do some works with f2? I used for wedding photography , and its very good, I think better you compare with EF85mm 1.8.
Yea I used the rf 2.0 quite a bit. I just never connected with it. I know you can get good results with it though!
I rented this lens for a week and used it on my R5. I cannot express how much your opinions on this lens exactly mirror my feelings on it. It was good, but. Mehhh. I returned the rental and did not buy this lens. Just couldn’t connect with it either. The slow autofocus was driving me crazy. It’s the same stm as in the rf 50 and 35, but because of the focal length you really notice it at 85mm. I find that using the 70-200 2.8 is simply much better.
Yea right there with ya!
Thanks Tony. I'm thinking about picking up the EF 85mm f/1.4 IS USM how does it perform on a RF adapter? does the F2 beat it in terms of focusing speed etc?
The ef 85mm f1.4L is an exceptional lens. Although it’s still an EF, I’d much rather use that over the RF 85. It’s just such a beautiful lens, it will go down as legend status for me
Thanks! This is all great news in your video. I also read though that with the EF 85 mm F1.8, the maximum burst shutter speed cannot be achieved. I'm curious if that's the same for the F1.4 and the F1.2 EF versions?
Hey Tony! Greetings from Brazil!! Can i suggest another video? A comparison between RF 85mm f/2 Macro against EF 85mm f/1.2 L with adaptar on a mirrorless camera? Here in Brazil, an used 85mm EF 1.2L has a price similar to a brand new RF 85mm f/2. Thanks!
I’d def suggest the 1.2L over the 85mm f2. The glass is just so much better
Hello Master :
Please help and give me some advice,
The camera I am currently using is Canon EOS R10,
The kit lens used with it is (RF-S18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM)
My main subject matter is toy photography.
The secondary shooting content is street photography or portrait photos.
Now I want to buy new lenses, after watching your video,
Want to compare between Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM and RF85mm F2 Macro IS STM
After making a choice, I would like to ask you to give me some advice on which lens is more suitable for me? Thank you.
I would suggest the 85mm macro. If you can spring for the 100mm f2.8L, that’s the lens i would suggest for toy photography. That’s a pro lens for product photography! You could also use that for street photography

Master, thank you for your reply🙏🙏🙏
How’s the RF 85mm 1.2? I’m planning on picking it up next week.
It’s a beast of a lens. Big and bulky but so so beautiful.
I have the Canon 85mm 1.4 IS L, love that lens. It's the rendering that's way better then the others 85mm that I had or tested.
Agreed. It’s an incredible lens!
I'm thinking of getting the 1.4x to use with the RF 50 I have instead of this lens. (I'm a hobbyist who loves taking pictures of birds and nature.)
Does the 1.4x work with the 50? I know it doesn’t work with my rf 70-200 😔
Not sure you stated what it is that you don't like about image quality. Wish you could elaborate.
Just got an R6 Mark II with the RF 35mm 1.8, the Zoom Lens 18-150mm and looking at this one!
I’m a total beginner starting photography studies to be able to shoot for my Instagram Business Profile and Website.
Feels like I have more than enough!
That would be a great addition to your kit!
@@TonyMellingerWell a crop lens on ff camera is not such a good combination. I think he threw away some money.
I'm upgrading from a 60D to an R6 I'm thinking I'm better going with the samung 85mm 1.4
That’s a solid upgrade! You’ll love the R6! I don’t have any experience with the samung lenses, I’m a pretty big canon lens snob 😝
Imagine a Lens that the cost is higher than 2000 USD and it's not stabilized, it's heavier and only 2 stops brighter, and people recommending to buy it.
Why do you think that is?
bias probably
Because it’s objectively a better lens.
"Only" 2 stops brighter? Thats a lot! That's 400% brighter! 400% more light to your sensor!
Have had a chance to check out the smayang 85 1.4?
No, I’m such a canon lens snob 😩 haha I need to test out third party lenses some time though. Does it have autofocus?
@@TonyMellinger The RF mount has both manual and autofocus lenses. Picked one up and paired with my R6 already, but would be cool to hear your opinion on this lens.
@@TonyMellinger yep! check out dustin abot review of it...
Gteat video. How is the weather there? How cold is it? I would like get the 35mm 1.8 , 50mm 1.8 and 85 mm 2.0.
It was in the single digits all week, were finally back up in the mode 20s-30s which is much more bearable! That would have you pretty much covered for awhile!!
Thanks for the vid!
But, really wish people would stop negatively comparing the f/2 to the f/1.2; there is a $2000 price difference for fork sake!!!
Sure is. I should give it another shot, huh!
why your not connecting with the image is because it looks like cheap glass compared to the 85 1.4
😎
me and at least one other person are going yo hickery falls on sunday wanna come
What’s hickery falls
My ef 85mm f/1.8 do the great job....
Awesome!
yea dude...picked up the 85 and the hoping for the 35 soon but for sony :D
Haha Sony. People still have those? Jk jk hehe
@@TonyMellinger i used the r6 recently...had fun with it
Technically, it's an amazing lens, but image quality lacks spirit or smth, images look flat and empty. I sent it back.
I’m with ya.
