Love your channel! Can you do a video on lesson planning? Managing lesson plans for multiple groups/grade levels?

You are incredible! As a teacher transitioning from teaching general ed to teaching art, you're an absolute blessing to find! Teaching art has always been my DREAM, but it's so different from what I'm used to (and I'm only 1 1/2 years in). THANK YOU for making this content❤️

I have the most amazing Right Start Teacher/Mentor as well as Art Mentor that are always there to help me out. The first year is demanding for new teachers like me because we are learning how to use Rubics, how to turn in the grades, how to use Bright Space for remote teaching and setting up assignments, how to sign up for Continuous Learning classes and in my case, how to navigate my teacher's certification and signing up for evening classes. I feel in awe with how awesome my county is in helping first year teachers like me. I am lucky to be at the right place, right career, and at the right time. We are about to have our Artist Teacher's show soon and I am super excited to be submitting a piece of mine there and getting to see the works of all art teachers who are practicing artists like me.

I’m glad you found a supportive situation that works for you! I recently saw a very sad statistic that many more than half of people that start teaching with provisional licenses quit. Many places don’t provide the support new teachers need. Very exciting that you still find the time to create too!

What is advice you would give a teacher who gets a new group of students every quarter? Our quarters are usually 14 weeks, how many of those weeks are spent teaching routines? Additionally, my classes are 30-40 minutes, how would you structure your year towards optimal conditions for the kids and yourself?

That is challenging! With such short classes, I would go slowly adding in routine for the first 6 classes. I make a video teaching the rules and feel it’s worth my effort. Especially for you with multiple first days and starting new with different students you should consider it. ua-cam.com/video/oUIWtqztljU/v-deo.htmlsi=1aukOEhvnLamULpB. With the short classes be sure you have a solid routine for students coming in and getting settled so you don’t waste time ua-cam.com/video/m2JSYXeOgWc/v-deo.htmlsi=xMgLEA7yPEW05lW7

Great video Katie, question if I may. If you're not painting or doing 3d work first half of the year are they just using dry media for the first half? Seems like it would be hard turning out that many projects with limited media choices. How do you deal with that? Do they get bored with crayons, color pencils, markers, etc. TIA Mike

We have quarters. The first 9 weeks I move slow. I go over routines and rules in a lot of detail. Yes, we do dry media during the first 9 weeks mostly. So, yes drawing and collage projects come first. We also use tempera cakes during this time to build into full on messes. Many projects span multiples classes. I hope that helps to clarify. So, its about 7 classes of low mess media then transition to messy media. We also do a ketchup/pickle day at the end of the quarter one week to finish any non completed work.
