- In this video, we take a quick look at trout lily, a very nutritious wild edible plant that grows as a ground cover in many eastern woodlands of the United States. In this video, we'll get super up close to help you ID the thing in the wild. The entire thing is edible, even the bulb that grows beneath the ground.

See you outdoors!
Intro music for this video was written and recorded by myself.
Other music in this video came from the UA-cam Creator Studio.
Short, Sweet, and to the point. Thank you again!!!!
William Mitchell Thanks :-)
Great video man.
Thanks for the video! I just picked up a handful of the very tasty bulbs yesterday. Thank god the bulbs arent too big otherwise they would go extinct from over consumption. I find the leaves leave a slightly burning sensation in my mouth so I tend to prefer the bulbs. I wonder if there are any cooking recipes out there for the bulbs. Thanks!
Interesting! I see them alot in the spring.
I recently found some trout lily, tho i dont know much about it so this video is alot of use thanks man.
Kullcraven Bushcraft Glad it could help. The root bulb is also edible and can be delicious roasted if you have the time to do so :-)
I was told you cant eat them after the flower, so just until they dont flower
We have them here in Hokkaido, Japan also, called "Katakuri" I prefer the corm/bulb?, it's crunchy and tastes like water chestnut, but quite deep in the ground most times... here in Japan it used to be dried and used as a starch and thickener, they are now apparently on the "almost" endangered list - but I still see plenty in spring, eating too many acts as a laxative...
paul was taken very interesting. Thank you for sharing this information.
Good stuff Dave
ben terwellen Thanks Ben :-)
one of my favorites
Allen Ballard Cool! Do you just eat the leaves, tubers, both? How do you like to prepare them?
On the trail I eat them raw. But only a few at a time. But I cook them in eggs like I would spinach. I've not used the tuber part yet.
How much do you have to eat before you start vomiting?
love these videos!
How long to re seed?
Should the bulbs be left in place and just eat the leaves?
Are you in Michigan? I stumbled upon your videos and its great timing I just saw some trout lily yesterday and was wondering if they were edible and morea bout them.
I wish he didn’t quit UA-cam because his content was amazing.
Got to look for it in our area.
Steven Nack So long as they are still out.
Hi. Are the yellow flowers edible too?
zalkona Good question. I'm not 100% sure.
Yes they are!!
u show the leaf without the identifying flower ?
yeah, just thought about that. Problem is, the flower doesn't pop up until some time after the leaves are already edible.
damn you can literally eat anything can't you
And what about the bulb...!?
Its the main dish to this plant.!
Amateur.!!
