    In English there is a term “stick in the mud” for people who are dull and hate fun and change, but apparently one of the original meanings centuries ago was troublemaker! Maybe that is similar to 泥棒 (dorobou) meaning thief.

    Because only the onyomi of this kanji is used, its phono-semantic etymology is easy to see. 木 provides the meaning of wood, whilst 奉 (onyomi hou, bu) provides the pronunciation.

    Europe : Mikado, Japan : Pocky... Why ?! 😭

    • @Toppogi-kanji
      @Toppogi-kanji  2 місяці тому

      Thanks!
      I've heard that in Europe they changed the name because "pokey" conjures up a bit of a bad word!

    • @jennsuicune
      @jennsuicune 2 місяці тому +1

      @Toppogi-kanji Maybe in English... In France it means nothing at all 🤷🏻‍♀️. Whereas Mikado is a game we all know, so every French understands the allusion to the famous Mikado game stick when seeing the chocolate stick biscuit☺️

    Sorry for the random comment but I just wanted to say IN CASE.

    日本語を話さない国で、棒ということはタートルズのドナテロの武器であるので有名です。
    西側諸国で、十一月十一日は第一次世界大戦の停戦で有名です。決定は午前五時に決まったそうですけど、十一時に締結が発効したということなんです。
    そのため、西側諸国で、毎年、十一月十一日午前十一時十一分に、一分間の黙祷は習慣があったそうでしたけど、第二次世界大戦が終わったから二年後、米国で、この「休戦記念日」は「復員軍人の日」(退役軍人の日)に変更されたんです。
