I heavily disagree with the narrative that the "game only gets good at X hours in" or "X expansion is when it stops being bad". I may come off as an ARR fanboy here, but I also didn't like it on my first playthrough, precisely because I rushed through it and wanted to play with my friends as soon as possible (or as they said "get to the good part"). But when I replayed it a year later I fell in love with ARR. If you give it a chance ARR is a genuinely interesting story with good worldbuilding, exciting fights (do people forget how fun some of the trials were after redoing them 1000 times for roulettes?) and most importantly, it can be really immersive if you don't treat it as a chore to be done as quickly as possible (which is a recipe for disaster) but rather as a slow-burn jrpg in the shape of an mmo. The patches can drag on, sure, but they have cut a good chunk of the filler and it's not like we don't have highlights like 2.2 with the foreshadowing of Doma and Stormblood, or the entirety of 2.5's "Before the Fall". Saying "Post-ARR is bad/boring/too long" is reductive and treats all patches as one entity, when you should treat them as individual chapters instead. Finally, like with any other 300+ hour experience, I recommend taking breaks, not because there's nothing to do, but because it's easy to burn yourself out with this kind of game, especially if it's your first MMO
1st rule if you want to have fun in FF14 (or any game for that matter...) : ignore the fact that the game is 14 years old and dont try to "beat it". And 2nd, quit your expections. Delete them. Get rid of any preconceptions and see what it has to offer you. If its still not up your alley, you can at least say you gave it an honest shot. And should you like it, you can be assured that the journey ahead will be worth your while.
Haha I got a PS5 when FF16 came out and after beating that I went and did the Free Trial of FFXIV. I loved the game so much even at early levelling that I got the complete edition and am slowly playing through everything on my black mage. I should be all caught up by the time the next expansion comes out.😂
I don't mean to overhype 14 too much, but I've just finished 16 too and let me tell you, that game is good but 14 is better in almost every way. Have fun :)
Oh no started as a black mage?, leveling that job feeels soo sloow, but once you hit lvl 70 you are gonna love it and in lvl 80 content you will get to see some 71k critical + direct hits with Xenoglossy, so always meld critical hit 😅 to your armour as a BLM
Leveling BLM as ur first class is like tying ur legs and skiping like idiot going for full scale marathon 😅 U have set urself for failure 🤣 My condolences for U m8 😉
I wouldn't recommend a story skip, not because I'm anti-skip, but because it's kind of a waste of money. Especially with Stormblood being added to the Free Trial. I'd say just play it for free. If it's free there's no need to rush. It makes it easier to enjoy the beginning if you're just trying to play the game and not just finish it as quickly as possible. If you're not invested by the end of Stormblood's patches, at least you didn't waste money to find out.
You forgot one of the best content parts about the game which is roleplaying. Roleplaying is infinite hours on its own. It also helps with making the story better by immersing into roleplay. Many aspects of the game support roleplay. The social community, expressive emotes, vibrant areas, packed places, amazing glam, and of course things like housing! So I highly recommend all players roleplay because it is good and fun. But DO. NOT. ROLEPLAY like the roleplay in 6:02 . DO NOT ROLEPLAY LIKE THIS. THIS IS BAD HARAM ROLEPLAY. WE DON'T TALK ABOUT THIS KIND OF ROLEPLAY. YOSHI PEENER BAN YOU.
The most fun ive had while playing ffxiv for 3 years now is when i play other games and log in only for static sessions. Fun game with same content over and over just the way i like my video games :)
this is my activity now, although sadly the gearing system in this game suck so we cant have high dps when we tried to play with other job in the prog schedule
Not really sure telling people to skip the story/levelling is a great idea? Raiding isn't exactly gonna keep you entertained for long lmao, when everyone else is gushing about the story and these new players are in Dawntrail confused af about NPCs, quests and references while their friends are gushing about how amazing the story is? Be a real quick way to make someone burn out and waste money ^^;;
like I said in the video, I skipped everything because the end game was fun for me, only then I got invested enough to want to play the story. I only suggested *those* who aren't interested in the story, skip it, to get to the fun parts.
Your vid is pretty good and realistic and I can't help but agree with the "cult" comments and a more critical approach, I myself have started to get bored of a lot of what the game offered about roughly 15-18 months of near daily play, and trust me when I say I did a lot of side shit, I already had the Kirin mount from ARR Ex trials before I even finished HW, I already beat all of Bahamut and Alexander raids synced (but with echo hehe) as well as HW Relic before I even beat Endwalker MSQ, hell I also had all my crafters at 85-90 before I beat the MSQ. So I wouldn't particularly say "the game becomes good/great when you're 500 hours deep", yes, it does get considerably better content-wise by Stormblood/Shadowbringers patches, but unlike WoW or many other MMOs where levelling is essentially a way to reach endgame so you can actually experience current patch content, FFXIV is different, there's a surprising amount of care in trying to keep old content alive and thriving and there will always be people who are into that shit you just gotta seek it out (people doing old content, people doing old content minimum ilevel, people doing old ultimates, eureka, bozja, etc). So yeah, "fun" can very much be the journey here rather than destination, because ho boy, the faster you rush to max level and beat MSQ the faster you find yourself either burnt out or feeling those "content droughts" which in EW in particular were a real bummer because they skipped on a lot of potentially great content, probably worst thing is not having another Eureka/Bozja type relic zone which instantly makes this expansion's endgame feel smaller and cheaper. I was actually in awe that Dawntrail is probably gonna come out mid-late 2024 summer because I literally have nothing to do in this game anymore and after finding a static to beat an ultimate or two I will probably just unsub until then. TL;DR It's probably the best MMO I've ever played outside of TBC/WOTLK World of Warcraft, but it's also the type of MMO which's gameplay systems you have to treat like a single player game's side quests and the less you care about the finish line rather than the journey the longer you're gonna love it. Well, there's also the community but that's a whole can of worms of good and bad.
@@donkiwi4888 playing a mmo for 1.5 years as your "main" game isn't something out of the ordinary though? Even if you barely logged on without unsubbing I still think there isn't enough gameplay "meat" here for over 2-3 years of play, from what I understand a huge part of the playerbase joined between 2021 summer and endwalker's release, while most of the people I met since then haven't quit the game altogether, there's definitely been a lot who feel like they've done most they wanted and 6.x content has been one and done type beat. Kinda bringing us back full circle to there just not being enough engaging content (unless you're going for full blown achievement hunting/completionism) for the average player for more than 2 years of sub imo.
