If you put a layer of stain on the cane part of the chair that you painted white, you will be rewarded with the cane color again. Just put the stain on with a cloth and immediately wipe it off. I've used this method on furniture myself. Baskets as well. It works.
1. Oil based poly urethane clear coat will stick to paint (even if it is water based paint). 2. However water based paint will not stick to oil based stain, clear, or paint. 3. If you are not sure what the previous coating is, shellac will stick to everything and everything will stick to shellac. Shellac is as close to a silver bullet as you will get in the world of refinishing furniture. Shellac is naturally amber in color and is sold as a clear coat (typically called sanding sealer). Shellac is also available in white. Denatured alcohol is the solvent in shellac, so you will need denatured alcohol to clean your brushes. Another thing about shellac is that it dries (it does not cure), therefore it can be reactivated back into its liquid form simply by wiping furniture down with denatured alcohol. For that reason shellac is typically not the best choice for a final top coat. Also, the fumes from shellac are brutal, because of the denatured alcohol. Follow all safety precautions, and you will still probably end up with a terrible headache. Opinions: The "Oreo" chairs look great. Enjoy them for years to come, you are definitely over thinking it.
Hahaha thank you for all of that! I've been overwhelmed with all of this wood working research, and you just summed it up for me. I'm glad that you guys think I'm over thinking it, it puts me at ease :)
It looks gorgeous. If after time you don’t also love it there’s an option of Glazing the rattan with a Gel Stain to darken it up a bit. It is a technique similar to antiquing. I do like it as is though. 👏🏼🌞
Just as an aside, FYI, a female turtle has a flat bottom shell, a male turtle's shell is concave so that when he breeds the female, the top of her shell fits against the bottom of his.😂❤❤❤
I like the wood stain😊I would stain the cane, it's more authentic & in line with how it would Ave originally looked. You could doba lighter stain on the caning❤
I don't like the stain or the blondish wood. The stain just highlights the sections of wood on the top of the chair which was used either making it or as a repair, which did not take the stain as the rest of the wood. Therefore it make the whole thing look patchy. I would paint the wood black or try and find a very black stain for the wood! That being said you will still have a problem with the patchiness so the black pain is a better choice. The seat cushions need to match the cream paint on the back of the chairs, navy blue is not cutting it.
I’m in the process right now of changing the backs. I want to try a different color. As far as the seats…. That blue is what the chairs came with and under no circumstances is that staying….. it’s HIDEOUS. Can’t stand that blue!
I liked the cane with the original color; it seems like it would look better with a stain rather than paint. Great job on the staining of the wood - it's beautiful.
Tims surprise at being in the shot are always my favourite part of your videos 😂 I love how they turned out. When you’ve done the seats I’m sure you’ll start to like them more!
I've been following your chair saga for a while and I must say I'm admiring your patience 😊 I think that it will all come down to the fabric you choose. It can blend the colours together. Oh, and your boyfriend is funny 😂 Cute little turtles ❤
I like them, but maybe you would like them if there was less of a contrast between the colors. I'd try to gel stain the cane a slightly darker color than the creamy white. Go with your gut and try it! ❤😊
If it were me, I would paint the cane a true color instead of neutral. Maybe a sagey green to pull in the rug in the adjacent area? I'm getting grandma's special occasion dining room right now (but that might just be the trauma talking!) Do you know what fabric you're going with for the upholstery?
I’m thinking about going with more of a cream color, but I was originally planning on the chairs being light… I’m thinking about painting the backs like a tan color? I know that like black with tan rattan is really popular right now 🤷🏼♀️
Congrats on hanging in there! As far as the color goes, I think it comes down to how much attention you want to draw to the chairs. Do you like the focus on the engraving in the wood or the backing? In my opinion, they seem to be competing at the moment. Also, consider pulling back and looking at them in the dining room. They are part of a much larger whole, which might help your decision. If I were doing this project, I would choose between all light and all dark. The fabric will be the final element, impacting the overall look. By considering what you want to be the star feature in the chair and what will be the supporting elements will help narrow down the choices. The wood, the backing, or the fabric?
Have you tried a gel stain? It doesn’t absorb into the wood grain. I like a more brown base on the cane and a gel stain over the white would at least warm it up.
When you showed the final stained chair I wasn't really sure if the colors work but after you switched the scene to the dining room with the white background I was like: "HUH that really fits quite nice!" Like the others already said, the dark stain and the white background really contrast each other very well . I'm not really sure about the blue seat cushion though, it kinda goes against the rest of the color theme (maybe a white, cream or dark brown cushion would fit better? Can't wait to see what you pick in the next episode). Love your checkered hair bows btw, they really offset the paint stained Dickies overall :D
I’m definitely going to have to get rid of that blue! It reminds me of those mega churches you see on tv with that electric blue carpet! Almost like the Simpsons movie. I appreciate the support though with the white background. I’m glad that someone thinks it looks nice! Sometimes when I’m in my own head it’s really nice to get reinforcement and see what other people think. So thank you for letting me know!
Just found your channel, new subscriber! I would leave the chairs as they are for now, do the seat cushions and the rest of the room and then look at the whole room, you'll have had time to sit with the colours of the chairs. I think you may be too close to it ie you've been working on it for a long time, and it's been frustrating for you! 🤗

I’ve never heard of this! That’s so cool!
Congratulations, your new full time second job is filming, editing, posting and replying to comments on your UA-cam Channel. Keep up the good work!
Hahah thanks! It’s a full time job for sure!
Maybe try toning done the starkness of then white by doing a 'stain-wash' or brown paint wash over it? I'd try a test patch first!
I should look into this 🤔 sounds like it could be a good option!

Maybe dark wax the white part. It’s too stark. I liked the unstained wood better than the stained with the white
I agree! I’ve just bought a different color for the wicker so I’m going to play around with that.

I was thinking of doing a light tan? Hopefully that works :)
Having lived through the 70s, I’m not entranced with 70s “Italian”- style furniture. I do still have my blond Thonet rocker.
I didn't know the name of that rocker, but I think it's beautiful...thanks for sharing!

I really hope I do! I’m glad you like them! As far as Tim… I do this to him all the time and every time he’s thrown off 😂😂

You’re a totally right. I ended up changing it to more of a beige this week and it looks so much better!

I think that they’re competing too. I want something that works more in harmony. It’s been very discouraging 🥴
@@RoseRenovations Your honesty and tenacity inspire others to hang in there, too. You're close to solving this :)

I haven’t tried that! But I think it definitely needs to be warmed up more! I’ll have to look into that :) thank you!
