Andrew Lloyd will go down in Australian sporting memories as the GREATEST come from behind victory ever in athletics...Simply he believed the dream !!!
I am feeling a little indifferent this morning and need to be inspired....When I need to be motivated I watch this race. Its never over til its over !!!
24 years later to the day that they opened the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games we had our son... Lloyd! Named after this inspiring athlete and man who showed the world that day that you should NEVER give up. Note: So far our 5yo Lloyd is the fastest in his little atheletics club- Australia and the world may get to cheer 'Lloydy' on home again soon!
Lloydie is a legend. i used to train with him running around Church Point and Narrabeen in Sydney's northern beaches. I would stay with him on the flat from Mona Vale to Narrabeen, then he would just burn up that bastard of a hill up Powderworks Road to the Bahai Temple. When I watched this in 1990 I remembered him sprinting up that hill and I thought, "If anyone can run this guy down, Lloydie can." If you know that hill you'll know how hard Lloydie worked running that most days of the week.
Still remember watching this as a 10 y/o with my old man, himself a sub 14 5km runner, thumping on the wall in excitement as Lloydie comes home like a train. Good times
It may not have been an Olympics, or even a showdown between immortal combatants of the 5000m distance - but THIS, is arguably the most exciting, dramatic and unbelievable moment in the history of middle distance running. It is absolutely epic.
When you considered that........ he battled back from serious arm and ankle injuries sustained in a 1985 car accident in which his first wife was killed....that he underwent 7 operations........his last 200metres was bloody astonishing
Timed to perfection. Lloyd could have gone with 1 lap to go but chose to tuck in until the 200, allowing him to conserve energy and use Hamer to pull him through to the 100 where he unleashed the beast. Epic run
32 years ago .......my neighbour came shouting out from the top of his house onto his balcony that Andrew Lloyd was " coming home " in the 5000m ........ What a great memory during these present Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.!!! My neighbour achieved his own golden medals by riding his push bike from Sydney to Melbourne and some time later .......from Melbourne to Sydney!!!! We " fun runners " from Frank's ?? magazine readers, enjoyed many events locally in Berowra and the City To Surf runs of course. My best prize was a " lucky door " prize win put on by Singapore Airlines in 1979 when a 65 year old ran past me and cheered me up in my first fun run !!! I was 39yrs old!!! Happy days.... Pete Collins
This is the run that epitimoses the best that Australia has to offer. You stick at it, you give yourself a chance and never quit even if those around you have doubts.
I'm watching this again during covid. I have to write an ad about business recovery. So, I came here for inspiration. Hope your business is still standing Denis.
We had been at the velodrome most of the games, we didn't have tickets for the 'drome that night so we went down to the stadium. I told my wife that I would not do much yelling that night as it was very croaky, then came Lloydie! I was literally speechless for days!
"Ohh...... Lloydy!...... Andrew Lloyd!...... Andrew Llo...... Ohhh!...... What a finish!...... Ohhh...... Unbelievable...... Ohh......" I like to begin Monners' EPIC CALL transcript slightly further back, where he can be heard quietly pleasuring himself @3:52. 🎩🧐 ....bookended by a final onanistic "ohh" @5:01. Love ya work Monners.
I was there that day. The Aussies were cheering on Lloyd but everyone else was cheering for Ngugi and Roger. A popular sentiment was that Lloyd was first across the line but Ngugi won.
@danielhduong I hate drug cheats too but this is way too harsh an assessment of Ngugi. The Kenyan association had not told their athletes about the new out of competition testing. Ngugi, who was in the Kenyan Army, had foreign strangers turn up on his doorstep wanting a urine sample. Not sursprisingly he refused.
Two observations apart from the magnificent performance by Andrew Lloyd. Firstly, Wally Foreman just hogged the commentary entirely, not letting Monners get a word in. What’s the point of having an expert co-commentator if they don’t get to speak? Secondly, Foreman’s derisory comments regarding Lloyd after the finish were appalling in my view. Completely unwarranted if you know anything about Andrew’s career which included many, many victories. How would Foreman like his also-ran career subjected to similar criticism on national television?
@@briankeane346 Check out our amazing Commonwealth Games results Brian. It is all good for multiple nations. We just need to embrace the beauty of each nation!
Whenever I'm feeling down, I watch this and it cheers me up! LLOYDY!!
Pro tip: watch series at flixzone. Me and my gf have been using it for watching a lot of movies lately.
@Graysen Gordon yup, have been using Flixzone for years myself :)

Monners!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! One of the great moments in Australian sporting history.

Stunning race, didn't see it live but listened on ABC radio and Tim Lane's commentary probably the best individual race commentary I've ever heard!

As great as it was to see Lloydy win, more credit must be given to Ngugi, who still nearly won despite falling early in the race. That's guts!
This is the run that epitimoses the best that Australia has to offer. You stick at it, you give yourself a chance and never quit even if those around you have doubts.
Best kick finish of all time
I am so grateful someone uploaded this - how awesome!!
Today was not a good business day for me...After watching this LLoyd victory for the umpteenth time, I will conquer the World tomorrow !!
I'm watching this again during covid. I have to write an ad about business recovery. So, I came here for inspiration. Hope your business is still standing Denis.
Andrew Lloyd, you were the greatest. Even if it was for only one day.
GREAT race, I was up in the stands losing my voice, as I had been yelling for the Aussies at the velodrome the previous few days.
what was the issue with the commentary?..
The great John Ngugi tries to do a Seoul '88 and run away from the pack but what great sprinting from Andrew Lloyd. Incredible.
I have the video of this and bloody loved the call and race
With his running and training it’s amazing that he still has time to do so many musicals
Good point !
A very talented runner and singer😂
We had been at the velodrome most of the games, we didn't have tickets for the 'drome that night so we went down to the stadium. I told my wife that I would not do much yelling that night as it was very croaky, then came Lloydie! I was literally speechless for days!
Oh Russell - what a great story!
Commentators were Steve Monaghetti (Gold Medallist) and the late Wally Foreman;
both earned the highest Australian accolade: being a "good bloke".
Lloydie!
Great finish by Lloyd.
But what a call by Wally Foreman, one of the greats.
Eveyt time I need to be motivated, I watch this race.....In the words of Churchill.."never never surrender".
Я пересмотрел раз 5....Это просто невероятно!
As the headline in the Sydney Morning Herald read the next day: "Bugger the silver, I'm going for the gold".
"Lloydy!"......"Andrew Lloyd!"..... "aaaahhhhh!"
"Ohh...... Lloydy!...... Andrew Lloyd!...... Andrew Llo...... Ohhh!...... What a finish!...... Ohhh...... Unbelievable...... Ohh......"

anyone have kate andersons 5000m gold 1998?
Um I don't think Australia had ever won this event, nor have we since.
John Ngùgī..The legend
LLOYDY!
I hope Lloyd thanked Jolly Roger! Great finish.
Just the one rating - 5 stars / excellent, is that you Lloydy? This was great stuff but you have to watch both parts.
I was there that day. The Aussies were cheering on Lloyd but everyone else was cheering for Ngugi and Roger. A popular sentiment was that Lloyd was first across the line but Ngugi won.
Not to take anything away from Lloyd's performance, but this was Ngugi's race.
It clearly wasn't.
Lloyd wone the race no doubt that he was better than Ngugi or anyone else
True, that's exactly what I'm sayin
BEST AUSTRALIAN FLAG EVER bring it back! under Hawke this was the hope possible!
How the hell do you bring in a politician in this moment you goose.
you beautyyyyyyyy !!!!

Shut your mouth old, dummy
@@bxxngan Don't blame it on Kenya.. Don't blame it on the piss boys.. Blame it on Ngugi..
Powederworks Road, Andy. Powderworks Road. :-)
watching Phar Lap win
Ngugi would have easily won had he not fallen.....buf well done Lloydy
Lloyd almost runs as well as me.
Ngugi was a drug cheat!!!!! He refused to take an out of comp drug test and announced his retirement coincidentally!
Do ya think he slung one up Lisa Martin?

Given the tragedy in his life, this man deserved success!
This is the Australian Spirit! We Aussies are famous for achieving great things under pressure. Fucking Famous Forever!!

Not liking Wally. He is a little unpatriotic. For goodness sake! LLody deserved the win!!
