Awesome tip for real ADHD people who listen to podcasts or youtube videos while working: Open two tabs in your browser window. Play whatever you would like to listen to in one, play this in another on quieter volume. Will keep you from getting too sucked into the rabbit hole of whatever you want to listen to while helping you focus on your work. You're welcome.

Look, I doubt most people that take medication for it have it either. There's no definite line with these mental things. It's not something you have or don't. It's just that a lot of people have a few of the symptoms and use the label.

@DBNROP yes, all these things are normal, but they are EXTREME in people with ADHD. Yes, exercise and healthy living can help, but they help by *changing the chemistry in your brain*. Trust me, I lived a long time in denial, and it drove me to the edge of suicide. I felt useless and stupid. ADHD can be debilitating, depending on its severity.

    • @rockercaterrorencountered4924
      @rockercaterrorencountered4924 5 років тому +64

@DBNROP Let me introduce you to a concept that sufferers of ADHD call "hyperfocus". Your brain becomes locked on to something, usually something useless, and gets stuck on it, sometimes for hours. During this hyperfocus, people may forget to fill basic needs, such as eating, drinking, or going to the bathroom. This is why a person with ADHD can spend hours playing a video game, but can't spend ten minutes on homework. I can write essays if they're on a topic I'm interested in (because I love to write), but doing research is tedious and I often get distracted.

For some reason, with ADD/ADHD the harder you try to focus, the harder it becomes to focus and the more painful, frustrating and draining the experience becomes too. This is why people with ADD/ADHD are exhausted after just a few math problems, or just a short period of time reading, working. It is very frustrating. You can’t work on something because you can’t focus on it, but you can’t try harder to focus on it because it makes it so much worse. Trying to force our brain to switch what it is doing or focusing on, makes are brain retaliate, which creates a struggle or a conflict and it can that can be quite painful, difficult and even impossible. It is like trying to force an rambunctious toddler into a car seat. It is essential for the toddler’s safety to be buckled into the car seat for the ride, but the toddler doesn’t care. They just don’t want to be handled and they especially don’t want to strapped down and restrained. The more they refuse to go into the car seat, the more you physically try to wrestle them in. Yet the more your try to force them, the harder they fight back, and the more difficult, miserable and draining the experience becomes, for you and the toddler. This is a lose, lose situation. You can’t just allow them to not be buckled, because then it jeopardizes theirs and possibly your physical safety, while driving, especially if the toddler jumps or climbs around the car and onto the driver. But fighting them into the car seat, is difficult miserable, exhausting, and sometimes you or the toddler can get physically hurt doing that too, especially if the toddler gets violent and kicks, bites or punches (which angry toddlers do).
I have learned I cannot force my self to focus on something like work while my ADD symptoms are bad, because they just become worse, much worse, then I get exhausted fighting them, and want to give up. Instead I have to take a break, let my brain relax. If I am outdoors I try to find the furthered away thing I can see. Looking out a view or at a horizon is the most helpful. Looking at things that are far away, helps get your thoughts and your focus out of your head (if you are lost in thought or day dreaming, which is usually my problem) and allows you to then switch your focus to things outside of your head. Like the work in front of you, or a teacher or boss you need to listen to. If I am indoors and there isn’t anything far away to look at, I instead look around the room, and I try to identify 3-5 things each in 4 or 5 different colors. I will saw find three things that are red or 4 things that are blue. Or I will count how many things I can see that are purple. You can also try to identify 3-5 things you can sense for each sense. Like 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch/feel, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell etc. After doing this it is much easier to shift your focus to whatever it is that needs your attention.
Listening to music, without words, that makes you feel calm or excited (depending on what you are doing, or if you are feeling ever stimulated and need to calm down, or tired or unmotivated and need to perk up) really helps too. Music is especially helpful for getting into the zone or flow state, once you are in the zone it makes accomplishing countless things much easier, better, and more fun.
The truly most helpful thing for me and countless people with ADD/ADHD is medications. ADD/ADHD medications are life changing for people that need them. Some people with mild ADD/ADHD can manage their symptoms without medication, but many people cannot. ADD/ADHD is a medical diagnosis that causes very real symptoms that can be very miserable and very debilitating. Just like any other medical problem is needs to be treated. You cannot will the symptoms of ADD/ADHD to go away, just like you cannot will a stuffy nose, a cough, or even cancer to just go away. Treatments are necessary. And people with ADD/ADHD are worth treating, they need and deserve relief from their miserable and debilitating symptoms, and they deserve to live the lives they want to live, not the lives their symptoms force them to live.

@@stephaniegreenwood4007 hey I don't mean to be rude with this but, Could you break up the text blocks a bit? It makes it hard to focus on reading it but I read party of it and I agree with what you're saying

@@stephaniegreenwood4007 thank you so much for this valuable, informative perspective. I don't have ADD/ADHD but I have provided occupational therapy services for students (3-14 years old) with the disorder(s).
You have done an excellent job of visually describing what is going on when focus and attention are necessary. It is like looking through your eyes and brain. I have used the techniques you suggested, tweaking them for each child, and they have been very successful.
Many who don't have the disorder can write about it, but they can never convey the feeling, perspective, experience, or emotion better than a person struggling with it. If you allow me to add two suggestions to your comment: 1) break up the text into visually manageable short paragraphs (some can be 1-3 sentences long) coming directly to the point. 2) apply sharp/tight editing to avoid redundancy.
In this time when everyone is doing more reading all the time from text, emails, and so on, seeing endless words on paper or a screen is exhausting before starting. Believe me, you don't have to have ADD/ADHD to become unfocused trying to comprehend endless dribble. Everyone sitting in front of a computer doesn't necessarily know how to write clearly and concisely.
Wishing you (and everyone with ADD/ADHD) the very best Now let me get back to this oh, so relaxing music!

@Old: I am 63 and an accounting student. I was diagnosed with add and adhd this year. The doctor put me on Adderall and it has helped a great deal. One thing I learned that even with the adderal, I need to have a good schedule and then practice doing it constantly no matter what I am doing. My doctor told me that ADD and ADHD is not something that can be corrected behaviorally because it is a chemical thing in the brain. The best way to control it is through Adderall or other drugs specifically for ADD/ADHD. I failed a course before I knew that the reason I could not focus was due to the ADD/ADHD. With the medication, focusing on studies is much more productive. Adderal is not a magic pill but it does help focus and a disciplined schedule seems to help out. I do procrastinate but it is a lot less. Good luck Old.

Ingrid l you should try taking a natural holistic approach for your adhd. I’ve had great success not using medication and instead take a lot of really good different types of vitamins, green superfood drinks, along with exercise and meditation and it’s worked wonders for me. Just thought I’d share. This music definitely helps with focusing though and calming down. Will definitely listen to this when I start studying for my PLT

First time I used Brainwave Entrainmen like this, I found it very very effective. Unfortunately, its effects were reduced over time, it was like my brain developed some kind of tolerance.
Anyway, I use Brainwave Entrainment for meditation and studying, it helps a lot with my ADD. I found that if I cycle between different Brainwave Entrainment tracks I make it more effective.
With this audios+meditation+willpower I hope I will became better at focusing over time :)

my son and I both have adhd. He is /was extreme I am mild to moderate but anxiety at times and folklore in my head are real. this helps me shut it down a lot on the days that i cannot control it. I wasn't getting treatment for it as a kid so naturally i struggled but for my son I did neurofeedback for a year and (odd symptoms are gone, episodes are gone, anger and outbursts are gone ), therapy to regulate his right side of the brain as he was all gas (impulsiveness and inability to control movements it was real bad), kids gym to help him balance himself out, another exercise /talk therapy and he got 504 plan that he has never used so far. Although all above helped tremendously I still play these at night for him and meditations and morning affirmations as he will never be neurotypical and fit in a box but he is well balanced now and way much calmer (no meds ).... for myself I am highly involved in meditations, affirmations, breathwork, etc... Whoever reads this I hope you can get some ideas on how to help yourself or your child or neighbors child :). I think adhd is a super power in a way. Sure some days are harder some other way way harder but wen you learn how to approach it and what works for you what to def avoid it can be a real asset.

Susan Alex Percival I don't think I've read something as accurate as this! I never knew why I couldn't focus at all in school and my mom always got angry about it and said that I'm lazy or whatever. When all I could be thinking about in a class is why does everyone suddenly look 3D. Or the fact that my teacher is wearing a 2 colored shirt and I spend the entire class analyzing how the colors are organized in the shirt. The problem is that it's still not worth it to open up about this problem with family because they will say more annoying things because they just don't understand...

i've been writing to this for the past 3 hours! this track is truly amazing. i have adhd & a handful of conditions that trouble me with intrusive + racing thoughts. it can become very difficult to focus on things like writing when there's all this background noise rattling around in my head. music, snippets of conversations, idle musings, sudden ideas. at times, it's like i can't sit still physically OR mentally.
listening to this track is like sitting down in a canopy fort with a weighted blanket around my shoulders. the stars are sparkling outside my window, i'm in my own little world, working on my stories from the comfort of my own little nook.

I like this one better than anything I've found. The other ones (on and off your channel) often annoy me, distracting me, give me a headache or make me feel dizzy, or just make me tired. This one is good but I do with the music had a bit more variation to it, like if there were lower notes in one section so that I wouldn't get annoyed by the repetition after 3 plus hours.

This is the most effective ADHD focus / studying music I have tried to date. I have both ADD & TBI. I like the others, but, if anything until this track, they have all distracted me on some level. This one though, it deepens the focus of what I am doing, as if it is the soundtrack to the action that accompanies the required focus. Thank you for this. It is excellent. I have just subscribed and selected not just notifications, but "All Notifications."
