Thanks for this GREAT review man. You just helped me save $1,500. I had ordered the Canon RF lenses, but cancelled it once I saw that the Sigma was practically identical. The Canon might have a tiny advantage in certain focusing scenarios, but it's stuff I would never notice or care about so I cancelled the order and just got the Sigma for $1,099 vs $2,600 for the RF.
yeah I'll be honest the onyl differences I noticed from this video were that the sigma was letting in less light(assuming settings were identical), and the focusing took a bit longer but not $1500 less light and extra focus time
The IS in the RF seems to work a lot better than the Sigma. In the sigma video I can see some micro movements than I would like to stabilize after in premiere. The RF one seems "already post stabilized".
This Video was enlightening to me. Just I migrated from DSLR to entry level Full frame camera Canon R8 and as an enthusiastic photographer I stroger believe it RF canon lense does not justify the cost in comparison with this Sigma. Thank for great video.
I think I'll just go with the Sigma. I'm not making money from my photography and I've already saved 1k$ by buying EF versions of L lenses instead of RF ones. They work great and you can't really tell the difference. I've read some photography books and even some pros used tamron and sigma lenses on Canon DSLR bodies.
Thanks! Great video! Was in the market for a 24-70. Had the Tamron 24-70 G2 but was never satisfied. Too soft and low contrast at the long end. Because i want IS i have to consider between those two lenses. Was able to get a almost new Sigma a few days ago for a good price. Thought i might give it a shop before i empty my pockets for the Canon RF. And i'm really happy so far. I like the images it produces. The lens itself feels great. Much better overall than the Tamron. AF is super fast and accurate. Love it!
wow you blew my mind with something you said at the beginning, I had no idea the so famous canon 24-70 EF had no IS !!!! I was thinking of saving money not getting the RF and instead getting the canon, but the IS is a deal breaker for me. I should go with the Sigma Art 24-70 then since it has IS (or OS as sigma calls it) and it costs less. It's not as sharp as the canon but I need the IS for video.
I own the sigma and love it. Almost never leaves my camera. Only gripes are the weight of the lens (for some applications) and the barrel extends when zooming.
Great comparison video! I thought the sigma looked more crunchy (over-sharpening). I thought the character of the bokeh was better on the RF glass. However the Sigma wasn’t bad at all.
one thing on the autofocus noise. the sigma is notably louder than the canon due to canon's USM. However; you didn't hear the sigma in this test because your ambient audio lowered the gain on the internal mic of the camera. If you are in quieter environments, the autogain will increase and the "ticks" of the sigma's AF will become very apparent.
Thanks for that. Just out of curiousity, were you using the same WB for both lenses? I know most Sigmas are generally warmer than Canon glass but I didn't expect the huge difference seen at 04:30 where the Sigma has way more punch and "glow" in the skintones. If that is good or bad is personal I guess. But here I tend to prefer the Sigma fwiw.
canon have really dropped the ball on the RF system. They were behind the mirrorless curve against sony, and also prevented third party manufacturing. Unfortunately, people have realised just how capable old ef lenses and tamron and sigma lenses are with the R bodies, that their prices are still staying up. I mean even 3-4 yr old 24-70's don't go for anything less that 700$ on ebay
Fantastic review. Thank you so much. I have longed to buy the Canon after renting it to use with my R6. It was the BEST shoot of my life. BUT the price! If there wasn't a SIGMA that looks SO CLOSE, I'd still have held out for Canon. BUT there is the SIGMA. So I just ordered the Sigma (which is on sale - normally $1299 and right now $1141) and wanted to refresh my memory about why it was so good so I came here and saw the review I'd previously liked :). Sigma was as good or better than the Canon in all cases except Sigma AF was audible (and so is the Sigma 18-35 that I own and LOVE) but not significant. And if I'm micro nitpicking, the IS "could have" a little more nano movements. Canon is double the price so this is an easy Sigma win for me (although I hope they eliminate the motor sound to the Canon level and charge the same).
I had the canon RF version and it took a very slight knock against a padded chair that actually broke the outer body in that it twisted away from the inner mechanicals and couldn’t be fixed. The RF lenses are not as tough as the EF lenses and nowhere near as strong as the Sigma Art equivalent which is far more robust.
I’m 30 seconds in but already this is great. I got the RF version because I wanted to simplify my kit (around R6 and EOS R) but I mainly shoot portraits (sigma 85 and 135 Art, and RF 70-200) and the 24-70 is relegated to UA-cam videos and BTS shots mostly- it’s driving me nuts knowing I’ve got so much equity in a lens that I basically use for fun only. Been thinking of selling off the RF and getting sigma’s 24-70 Art or Tamron’s 24-70 G2 then maybe ditching my EOS R for an R5…
Sigma has more of a contrast image. I personally have the RF 24-70 paired with my C70, but for that price I could have picked up the speed booster and the sigma 24-70 f2.8
Not sure if you are asking me or Unconventional Media, but I’ll chime in. I haven’t shot that combination very much, but it works great. It just isn’t a focal length that works for me with the crop factor. It’s a 35-105 (ish). I like to be able to get wider than 35 on a medium zoom.
@@TimothyGordon My main type of work is filming weddings so the RF 24-70 F2.8 becomes more like a 36-112mm on the super 35 and the aperture is more like a F4. I love this lens it's my go to lens for just about any project. The autofocus works great and the control ring on it is very useful. I love the build quality and the optical stabilization works great! I've recently picked up the 0.71x adapter the EF 50mm F1.8 to use for interviews and get that extra stop of light. I'll use this combo during receptions where the lighting gets low and I don't need to zoom in and out as much.
Thanks a lot for this comparison, I was just choosing between these lenses from the review. I almost bought RF 24-70, then I would have lost canon 70-200 F2.8 ii (by selling it), but now I have sigma 24-70 and canon 70-200

from the comparison you can tell that the RF is way better on focus breathing, a bit better on autofocus and stabilization but man I would save 1100$ 11 times out of 10 cus that aint worth it and also you could get a 35mm f1.4 sigma art lens which is in my opinion the best 35mm f1.4 lens you can get now for canon and its just 800-900$ which is nuts considering the quality you get
Yeah, you're basically paying for that Red ring and the native mount. I've used plenty of sigma art glass and it's literally canon L glass or sony g master in disguise for less money
i have watched son many lens reviews before. I normally have to watch for 3 hours to make a decision. However your review was so simple and perfect that it only took this one video to make my decision.
@@rodricfrancis2281 bigger issue. Autofocus just doesn't work in video with Tamron lenses on the R5C. I have a 24-70 G2, 70-200 G2, 15-30 G2 and a 35 1.4.. none of them work. They all worked great on my R5.. and even work perfectly in photo mode on my R5C.. but do not work at all in video mode.

I am working with an R5 now but still do have some 7D Mark ii as backups and this is the exact video I was looking for. So stoked you made this video. You got my subscribe. Really helped me make the decision to save some money and go with the Sigma and also have the universal compatibility.
Man I always enjoy your reviews. Especially, that my interests and gear are similar to yours, I always get an easy answer when watching your videos, Thanks A LOT!
Enjoyed the review, thanks. I do disagree about the stabilization though. The Canon is stable with nice organic adjustments. The Sigma is also pretty stable, but making really ugly micro-adjustments (jitters basically). It's a very digital look and I doubt whether Warp Stabiliser is going to like it very much. That section really sold me on the Canon RF to be honest.
There is one BIG difference with RF vs Sigma EF versions - canon lens is much LESS shaky since the combination of lens And ibis work together. You get this (hand)+ icon shown. Meanwhile with sigma you have NO „+” sign, meaning stabilisation of lens And IBIS do not work in pair. Adding the adapter to EF gives additional weigth to sigma which is quite significant at the end.
Thank you for the comparison, it helped me a lot. I have an RF and I love the lens. But I'm a hobbyist and I'm considering selling my rf and buying a sigma here in the UK. As you said, the used RF goes for 2100 or 2200 and I found a sigma for 800 used. I could invest in other EF lenses with the same money that I have invested in my RF. Have you noticed a more pronounced yellowish tone in the sigma or do you think is just a white balance matter? Thank you once again
Glad the video was helpful. Yeah, you can save quite a bit of money with the Sigma. I didn't notice a color shift between the two lenses. For the tests in this video I had the white balance on the Sunny setting in the R5 and didn't make any color corrections, just exposure adjustments.
Thank you very much! I found your channel recently and it’s great. Today I was looking for some test of Sigma 24-70 with the R5/R6 and here it is! Great comparison. I consider buying 24-70 but the price of the RF is too big. I will test Sigma by myself but this video helped a lot, thanks!
@@heyammedah8684 Finally no. I’ve tried Canon EF 24-70 and it was too much front heavy especially for balancing on my Ronin S. Sigma would be even more. I bought RF 24-70 and I’m happy :)
Seems like Sigma and Tamron have nice lens but if you want that extra edge and are using a R5/R6 and you are making money off the system then I would go for the native mount RF, if is just a hobby then buy what you are comfortable spending.
Really like the sigma and price but the focus breathing is such a huge thing for me. Shooting clients some times in low light I lose focus for a second and if there is no focus to little focus breather it’s not as noticeable. Love the review
I dig my Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2 I will eventually move to Canon RF 24-70 2.8 If for any reason, just so I eliminate the need for the adapter and also I believe mayched with the R5 & R6 the stabilization will be a notch above. The Canon RF 14-35mm F4 IS that lens stabilized with both my R5 & R6 is ridiculous. The one place I may go with sigma is.. primes.. I'd like to grab the 24mm, 50mm, 85mm & 105mm.
Nice one Josh, I shot with the Sigma on an Eos R for 2 years, then switched to the R5 with the RF lens. I much prefer the Canon lens. Especially form factor and feel when holding it. I found the Sigma very front heavy on the adaptor. Edit: also, the focus ring went twice on the Sigma in the time I had it and i had to send it in for repair. I found it to be very poor for manual focus.
Thanks for the video Josh. Just to clarify, the Sigma Art 24-70 has image stabilisation so I can stabilise my images in low light | my videos with it on my Canon R8? I'm looking to upgrade my kit lens and this Sigma Art 24-70 f/2.8 + an adapter looks so much more appealing price wise than a Canon RF 24-70, but I'd like to retain the stabilisation as I'm starting to enjoy recording more video and learning how to colour grade etc. Cheers!
If I could find the SIgma more easily in my area, its pretty difficult even factoring in used, it would be in my kit now. Sadly, its very difficult to find here. Used Canon 24-70Ls are more easily available, by a slight. But many are in questioable shape while those in good condition are being sold off used at very inflated prices.
I really love this review. Especially since you added something about focus noise. I recently got a used EF 24-70 II and on my r6ii its very noisy when focusing...and I didn't think that was normal. Nice to see that the Sigma EF version is not noisy at all...I couldn't hear anything. could anyone hear anything? hopefully its not my ears that are bad.
Yeah the sigma is crazy for the price. You also get IS, you could go for the EF variant if you really want that red ring but imo, sigma definitely takes the cake
Please don't tell me this is just my lens... but the sigma doesn't have stabilisation in video mode like the canon does! I can comfortably walk with canon IS lenses at 24, moving more into the ninja walk the further I push the focal length.. the Sigma needs a ninja walk from 24 and only gets more shaky from there. (This is from video work only, it does seem to have more stabilisation with photo mode)
I preferred the Canon for the colors it produced, the seemingly smoother stabilization, and it's focusing. I'd say the Sigma was very close in comparison to the point where if I had that lens I'd probably keep it. As for buying one or the other... I think that really comes down to the price difference and whether or not the slight advantage is worth ~$700-1100 price difference. I'm leaning towards the Canon personally. I think it'll perform better for the event photography I typically do.
I think sigma has a slightly redish color on the shadows, while the canon is more muted and natural. In perfect lighting situations might not matter, but I am almost never in perfect lighting situations and will almost allways have to see those little differences magnify x 10 wile editing. I could be wrong though.
My Sony Sigma Art 24-70 f2.8 is amazingly sharp. Distortion is bad at 24mm but with 32mpix its ok to crop a little. Had the EF 24-70 and it was my got to lens. I have the R6 also but ended up getting the RF 24-105 as my walk around. Had it for 2 years and bought the Sigma recently for the Sony mostly because of grad and proms this year. Just wish Sigma created some RF lenses.
l have one main question. does Sigma support the 12 frames and 20 frames per second modes burst modes ??? It should say H+ in green colour Thank you 🙏🏼
l have one main question. Does Sigma 24-70 support the 12 frames and 20 frames per second modes burst modes ??? It should say H+ in green colour thank you!
Just got my Canon R7 because of your reviews, would hope you would use the R7 sometimes because of the aps-c difference when comparing lenses or other things :)
Thank you for your video! I have a question: I noticed you have the RF 24-70mm f/2.8. Could you share your criteria for choosing this lens over the Sigma 24-70mm?
The Canon RF lens has more details and contrast. Thanks for the review, going to pass on Sigma and get the Canon. I got the Sigma 50-100 1.8 it sounded like a old wooden ship that was going to fall apart when using it for video lol
I need to add a comment about the sigma I have two sigma’s art 24-70mm f2.8 and another two canon’s which are used with 4 canon rp câmeras One sigma got a focus problem after one year of use. The lens was sent for fix, we paid for a new focus sensor and after changing it, nothing happened. The problem persists, it doesn’t focus. Now my second sigma lens started to give a glimpse of might having the same problem. In my opinion for somebody who use it to shoot 2 to 5k shots in a weekend this lens can’t make it. I don’t think I’m unlucky that two lenses of the same brand and line are getting the same problem.
Are any of these lenses parfocal? How is the focus audio when it catches or misses focus? I'm seriously considering buying one of them (and I can't say much about the audio since it's silent, so I'm reconfirming)
don't have a full frame camera i have a crop sensor camera the canon 80d i guess when the prices goes down I'll buy me a full frame camera but for right now i only have the 80d and i want a good lens that can do everything with. I want a few pointers. I want to know how good this lens is and would it fits my canon 80d
Great video! Just what I was looking for, switching to the r6 mkii and was looking at the sigma. I was very happy once I saw your name next to the thumbnail, your hands down one of the best at what you do. Id put you up there with potato jet and McKinnon🫡💪Also loving the podcasts.
If I even stay with Canon and not swap to SONY I am heavily considering the SIGMA ART 24-70. I have the standard Canon adapter as well as the Viltrox speedbooster. Using it in Super 35 crop mode on my R5 with the booster would get me most of my range back and be able to take advantage of the higher quality 4k without the overheating. Canon is killing by not allowing Sigma and Tamron to produce lenses for this system. As it stands now I am actually on the fence about dumping Canon and going to SONY just because of the insane amount of AFFORDABLE lens options you can get from them.
The new firmware on the R5 has basically eliminated overheating so you probably don't need to shoot in crop mode anymore, unless you need the extra reach. I hear you about the lenses, Sony's e mount has so many lens options. It's pretty great. I hope Canon opens up the RF mount to third party manufacturers soon.
Such a great comparison video! My 35MM never leaves my camera but I need a lens for travelling and video content - the sigma looks like a great more-affordable option, but it looks like the colour was warmer, am I just imagining that? Either way such an amazing vid thank you!
That's funny because the Canon RF lens looks warmer to me, I see it in the colors on the flowers. There is a lot more yellow tones in the greens of the trees on my computer (14' MacBook Pro).

That section really sold me on the Canon RF to be honest.
have to agree there the canon is much much smoother
Thank you Josh for the helpful and informative comparison video! God bless, good luck and keep creating!
You're welcome. Will do!
Adding the adapter to EF gives additional weigth to sigma which is quite significant at the end.
so its Double price and if device is stabilized , for 80% amateur the price before a little more
Thank you for the comparison, it helped me a lot.
You left out the Tamron EF 24-70mm. It has image stabilization too!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
have you tried it
@@heyammedah8684 Finally no. I’ve tried Canon EF 24-70 and it was too much front heavy especially for balancing on my Ronin S. Sigma would be even more. I bought RF 24-70 and I’m happy :)
Sigma is great! I have this lens the only thing is its weight. it's quite heavy. but for sure outperforms EF lens
Great vid, dude. I honestly saw better stabilization from the Sigma, TBH. I’ll be getting the Sigma so I can be 2/3 of the way to their Trinity.
Thanks! The stabilization looked pretty similar to me. It was a bit surprising. I think that has more to do with how good the IBIS is in the R5.
have you tried it
@@heyammedah8684 I have not, no. I went with the Canon instead because Sigma is excluded from the RF mount.
Awesome comparison. Thank you so much. You got a new follower. Love from Switzerland
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching and for the support!
I dig my Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2
I will eventually move to Canon RF 24-70 2.8
If for any reason, just so I eliminate the need for the adapter and also I believe mayched with the R5 & R6 the stabilization will be a notch above.
The Canon RF 14-35mm F4 IS
that lens stabilized with both my R5 & R6 is ridiculous.
To me, I find the color coming out from Sigma lens looks better/artistic. I’m using the sigma 35 f1.4 with my R6 now, pretty good
Great comparison, great video. Thank you!
great video, getting the canon r5c and so hard to decide between these lense
Thanks for the video Josh. Just to clarify, the Sigma Art 24-70 has image stabilisation so I can stabilise my images in low light | my videos with it on my Canon R8? I'm looking to upgrade my kit lens and this Sigma Art 24-70 f/2.8 + an adapter looks so much more appealing price wise than a Canon RF 24-70, but I'd like to retain the stabilisation as I'm starting to enjoy recording more video and learning how to colour grade etc. Cheers!
so with the adapter does the autofocus still work the same on the EF lenses?
Can you compare also the "Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2" with Canon RF 24-70mm F2.8 L IS USM? If possible, with Sigma variant, too. Thanks
look forward to comparision of Tamron 24-70 G2 and 3 of others
If I could find the SIgma more easily in my area, its pretty difficult even factoring in used, it would be in my kit now. Sadly, its very difficult to find here. Used Canon 24-70Ls are more easily available, by a slight. But many are in questioable shape while those in good condition are being sold off used at very inflated prices.
I really love this review. Especially since you added something about focus noise.
I recently got a used EF 24-70 II and on my r6ii its very noisy when focusing...and I didn't think that was normal.
Nice to see that the Sigma EF version is not noisy at all...I couldn't hear anything. could anyone hear anything? hopefully its not my ears that are bad.
thank you so much for your review, I am looking for a lens.
Yeah the sigma is crazy for the price. You also get IS, you could go for the EF variant if you really want that red ring but imo, sigma definitely takes the cake
Great review. I think I liked the Sigma slightly better for my preference. I think it will be my next purchase tomorrow.
Thanks for making this video. I've been wondering about that Sigma.
Using the adapter does the sigma focus well/fast? Any issues cons of using adapter
I'm using R5C with Sigma Art 27-70. No issue with the Canon adapter. Fast focus for me.
This really helped me choose Josh! Thank you.
I think sigma has a slightly redish color on the shadows, while the canon is more muted and natural. In perfect lighting situations might not matter, but I am almost never in perfect lighting situations and will almost allways have to see those little differences magnify x 10 wile editing. I could be wrong though.
At 4:46 it looks like the sigma has more exposure even with the same parameters, is that because some clouds, or it is actually brighter??
My Sony Sigma Art 24-70 f2.8 is amazingly sharp. Distortion is bad at 24mm but with 32mpix its ok to crop a little. Had the EF 24-70 and it was my got to lens. I have the R6 also but ended up getting the RF 24-105 as my walk around. Had it for 2 years and bought the Sigma recently for the Sony mostly because of grad and proms this year. Just wish Sigma created some RF lenses.
Why isn't there any vignetting on the Sigma? I would expect that with RF to EF mount at 24mm
l have one main question.
does Sigma support the 12 frames and 20 frames per second modes burst modes ??? It should say H+ in green colour
Thank you 🙏🏼
Wow, the noise level of Sigma 24-70 is amazing! Have you tested other Sigma lenses (24art/35art/50art etc.)? Thanks!

Canon seems to have more shallow depth of field and better autofocus. The sigma seems to have more darker contrast
excellent video mate!
Thanks!
Hi Josh, yes sigma but lots people says sigma has focus issues.
The Canon RF lens has more details and contrast. Thanks for the review, going to pass on Sigma and get the Canon. I got the Sigma 50-100 1.8 it sounded like a old wooden ship that was going to fall apart when using it for video lol
It is worth to buy for canon rp instead of 24-105l lense ...my main purpose is wedding videos ...and how z the autofocus of the lens please reply
I need to add a comment about the sigma
I have two sigma’s art 24-70mm f2.8 and another two canon’s which are used with 4 canon rp câmeras
One sigma got a focus problem after one year of use.
WHO IS BETTER FOR PICTURES CANON OR SIGMA? I HAVE A CANON R 6 Thank you in advance
Are any of these lenses parfocal? How is the focus audio when it catches or misses focus? I'm seriously considering buying one of them (and I can't say much about the audio since it's silent, so I'm reconfirming)
hi, Josh! How do you like the image stabilization on the Sigma when you record video? like in movement?
don't have a full frame camera i have a crop sensor camera the canon 80d i guess when the prices goes down I'll buy me a full frame camera but for right now i only have the 80d and i want a good lens that can do everything with. I want a few pointers. I want to know how good this lens is and would it fits my canon 80d
Great review! Thank you so much!
How’s the ibis work in Sigma? Better than the Canon one?
Rf is for mirror less right?
Simply splendid. Thank you.
If you close your eyes you can imagine Deadpool reviewing two lenses 🙃
Great video! Just what I was looking for, switching to the r6 mkii and was looking at the sigma. I was very happy once I saw your name next to the thumbnail, your hands down one of the best at what you do. Id put you up there with potato jet and McKinnon🫡💪Also loving the podcasts.
Thank you so much for the kind words!
What kind of microphone did you use when comparing AF noise of both lenses?
Hello, Hiw can I use Sigma for my RF Canon Camera ?
Such a great comparison video! My 35MM never leaves my camera but I need a lens for travelling and video content - the sigma looks like a great more-affordable option, but it looks like the colour was warmer, am I just imagining that? Either way such an amazing vid thank you!
They are warmer, that’s standard on a lot of sigma lenses
That's funny because the Canon RF lens looks warmer to me, I see it in the colors on the flowers. There is a lot more yellow tones in the greens of the trees on my computer (14' MacBook Pro).
Great review Thanks.
Do you know If the sigma works with AF focus speed Settings (found on c70 R5c …)
Another incredibly valuable video. Do you think the Sigma would work properly on an R7 with the Canon EF adapter?
Thank you. Although I don't think I've ever tried that combo, it should work as you would expect.
Thank you for this test!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
6:38 RF lens has no focus breathing but Sigma has significant focus breathing.
Thanks a lot for the comparison! I knew the Sigma is at least equally good :D
The focal breathing on Sigma is a turnoff to me. I love the RF version personally
