It's amazing how many timbres come out of that Matriarch and how orchestrally pure it sounds. It sounds like wooden clarinets, metal flute, bowed cello, warm brass... amazing sound out of analog oscillators and filters. I understand why you say your favorite thing about this synth is its sound. Agreed.
Great and beautiful demo. The Matriarch is honestly my favorite synth that I’ve owned. It’s just magical and otherworldly sounding. And the bass can get surprisingly gnarly.
Nice video and demonstration !! I saw this Moog in another Ambient artist's studio setup and thought I'd check out other Ambient based demo's of the Matriarch. I do Ethereal Ambient, Atmospheric and SpaceMusic so this demo is right up my alley. I think I'll get this synth in the near future...definitely different sounding than everything else I currently have.
This is definitly the case of ,"Great instrument in the right hands. " I dig the relaxed vibe of your playing. Personally it allowed my ears to capture those very small sonic details which, you miss from a speedy lead shredding session. Thanks Mr Shoebridge :-)
sweet selection of sounds. it would be my first synth so im leaning towards the grandmother simply to not get overwhelmed with possibilities, but the ability to play chords is really tempting. im a melodig guy im gonna have chords on every track pretty much
Lovely! I wish I could see all your settings for those sounds, but I understand if you want to keep your secrets;) The text you superimposed is very helpful, though!
Looking forward to the incoming review more than any other so don’t rush it Tim! On another note, I’m sure you’re on the case however if not pls update to firmware v1.1.0 (released a few days ago) as it fixes a number of significant issues. Cheers!
ok now I understand what this Moog does (comparatively) and why I need one, thanks for this video - Matriarch seems a great companion to the Grandmother
Lovely improv! The Matriarch sounds so lovely, even without breaking out of the normalled signal path. This will fit perfectly with my Granny, Mothers & DFAM. I am saving up for this synth.
Thanks for this video - I really appreciate your playing skill. I just bought a Matriarch - haven't even had it out of the box yet. Can't wait for the weekend! The thing I think you were looking for with the MonoPoly comparison is not only the 4-voice paraphony (as with DSI Pro 2 and [apparently] Arturia MicroFreak), but the available round-robin voice allocation of 4 independently-voiced oscillators. I believe the best current example of the capability is the Vermona PerFOURmer Mkii, which essentially has 4 completely separate synthesizers (osc, filter, amp and LFO) in 1 housing with available round-robin voice alloc, as well as FM and sync routings between oscillators. The Matriarch has enough going on in that vein (though with 2 shared filters, amps and LFOs) to make for compelling sonic opportunities. Cheers!
The arturia microfreak is 4 voice paraphonic, fyi. I have already said in other video comments IMO, the best way to upgrade from the microfreak is a matriarch. I would love to get a matriarch some day. I think it is a really cool layout for a synth
What lovely sounds you can elicit from this Moog offering! Another 'left-field' paraphonic synh that just popped it's head up is the Behringer 'Poly D'...probably not as sweet-sounding as the Matriarch but for the money, it looks good value and interesting.
Tim Shoebridge has to be one of the most thoughtful synth guys on YuTube. I'm already thinking Matriarch has to be an extremely interesting instrument, even against Summit, JupiterX, Hydrasynth or Modal.
Hah! My Matriarch doesn't sound that awesome! ;-) (But that's because I'm just a hack!) Great "noodling" and impressive first video for this instrument. I also appreciate your mention of the Korg Mono/Poly -- it's fun to look back at similar feature sets, and I was clueless about the older Korg line-up.
There always seems to be something much more gratifying when you create a beautiful sound on an analog rather than just switching through presets on the modern digital? I’ve just been sent the summit to evaluate and while it has banks beautiful sounds, it just seems to me something that over a long period of time you might get a little bit bored with ? I have one of these Matriach’s on order, and although you say you’re just noodling, the type of sounds you are creating are exactly the type of sounds I would be looking for on this type of synthesiser. I love the fact that you can interact and patch anything to anywhere and this is predominantly one of the features that I love on my overti I have one of these on order and although you say you’re just noodling, the type of sounds you are creating are exactly the type of sounds I would be looking for on this type of synthesiser. jC3drums Good grief! I had no idea. That’s a synth that completely passed me by. I think it struggled to get mainstream acceptance for some reason....?
@@TimShoebridge I love the pro2 thanks to the great flexibility and good sounding filters. I'm not so sure why it got discontinued because it seemed to be good selling here in europe... Perhaps they got a new paraphonic synth comming in soon :)
I have a Pro-2 and still have loads of fun playing around with it :) I still have lots to learn about it too which is always a sign of a deep synth (in my opinion)
Great vid. I like how you combine the camera technics, the art in the sound and helpful infos in one video. I HAVE A QUESTION: The Dsi Pro 2 is also a beauty. I love the paraphonic mode, and still in a poly i would miss the round robin. Is there a poly except of the perfourmer and rev2 (gated sequencer) where you can treat each voice INDEPENDENT? In a choir, in a guitar and an organ- there are different sounding voices. In the case of the guitar its the different strings, some are thinner other are thicker. In an organ every pipe is different, in a choir there is every voice like no other. We need synths that can do that. I hope the polybrute will!!!!
Thanks for your videos and thoughts. Really helpful as always. There is another poly-synth you should check. Vermona perfourmer mk2. It’s build by a German brand and it sounds amazing, and it’s not an old glory, it’s available today.
Checking to see if you made a Moog One vid yet. Lol. Seriously, I saw someone WITH a Moog One say that they wished they had bought a Matriarch first, because they would have gotten what they really wanted without the extra thousands of dollars
Thank you for a great First Look, Tim. The Matriarch sings so beautifully in your capable hands. I can't help thinking of this instrument as an attractive alternative for those of us who want to make these gorgeous Moog sounds but cannot afford The One.
Bob Conway Thanks very much :) There’s definitely a huge range of applications for a 4 voice paraphonic synth, and the way the Matriarch allocates voices makes it very natural to play like a poly keyboard. While playing I sometimes find myself forgetting that this synth is not actually true polyphonic...
The One is an entirely different beast of creative ambient possibilities; the Matriarch and its filters really harken back to the modular Moogs of Tomita in the 70's - they're different animals from the same zoo [have both]
Hi, No I only have kept one of them. To be honest having to isolate each synth's audio and then isolate each oscillator every time they needed tuning was too much effort for me in the end :(
Ahhhh, yes someone who knew my love of TD and of vinyl bought me it as a present. I didn't have the heart to tell them that there's no vinyl inside! Wonderful present though :)
a real treat with all the previously unreleased stuff in there, and indeed a wonderful present, even without vinyl ;-). Continuing spotting different items in your Matriarch video (which is really cool on its own, don't know why I got so distracted with stuff in the background :-) ) , I'd be interested in hearing your views on the matrixbrute in another video if you find the time.
con fuzz I never owned a Moog Model D so I don’t know how vintage the Behringer clone really sounds but I’ve never before owned a synth like it for the character of the sound it can make. I think the Matriarch is more than capable of generating that same warm creamy fuzziness that you can get from a Behringer Model D. But of course 4 VCO’s in unison can sound immense! I got to know the “boog” very well, ie. how to tweak the filter and envelope controls to get what I wanted, with the Matriarch I am really still in the learning stage and the filter is more complex being two filters in one...
Paraphonic ones have frequencydividers to multiply the source osc's , this matriarch adresses seperate oscs intelligently in to 1 or more filters/vca , a different term should be used for this kind of poly??
Ref "The Moog One", I know that flagship costs an arm and a leg, but seeing that it could replace so much gear in a studio, it seems like a bargain to me... I'd imagine most, could sell several synths and it would be a very low cost option at that point. Some UA-cam vids do One justice, but many do not...
I really like the sound of this synth, but for the price to not have patch storage would be frustrating. Hey Moog, how about charging an extra $500 and let me store unlimited presets on it. :). EDIT- Oops, I totally forgot about the cables. OK, scratch the patch saving then. LOL
Funny how at 1:38 you started with something very reminiscent of Kraftwerk's Tongebirge (granted, the melody is with Florian's flutes): ua-cam.com/video/Gn6k1Lan89Y/v-deo.html
@@SPAZZOID100 The OB6 and the P6 are both fully polyphonic. Each of 6 voices has 2 analog oscillators and a vca and vcf.
