As a Ohio fan Jeff Hafley defense was freakin amazing, we were ranked #1 in defense, he also has experience in nfl with bucs, but of most important he love press coverage. important to note he's a db coach which is our weakest part of our defense so that even better.

If Gutey hits another 2024 draft of solid defensive players like he did choosing offensive receivers in the superb 2023 draft, then I think this GB defense is going to rock. If so this Packers team could be going to the Super Bowl next season. GPG!!

I think Perna said it in a GPS episode, but the kind of guy you really want is a young, creative mind who is able to shock the system and establish themselves as a new name in the NFL. Over next door on the pro-Vikings Paul Farington Show, it was pointed out that Jeff Hafley is well liked wherever he goes, and has been very successful at recruiting while at BC--but wanted to concentrate on the coaching end of things. DC with a bunch of DB experience could be huge, especially given we need a whole new safety room and a corner early wouldn't surprise me either. Plus it sounds like he's aggressive and will play press man, which a lot of CBs love to play. And I'd much rather see us give up a couple deep shots over the course of the season than watching teams just dink and dunk their way down to the red zone pretty much uncontested all year.

Proud BC fan here (and recent grad) - Hafley is a perfect fit in Green Bay. He’s great at evaluating talent, he’s gritty and aggressive, and he’ll press. The record at BC is slightly skewed because of BC’s talent comparison to other teams in college football. Even though they’re D1 they have surprisingly stringent rules for athletes so a lot of top talent isn’t interested, and BC has taken some low ranked recruits and made them gems.

Tom, your vid was the first one I checked out this morning on this. I am cautiously optimistic about this hire. He seems to have a good pedigree. And I think we'll see more college Head Coaches head to the NFL as coordinators, as they just want to coach and not deal with the NIL stuff.

For me just as a general life rule, hiring your buddies is a big no-no. I don't know if it will work out, though I hope it does. But what I do know is that if it doesn't work out, Lafleur won't have the backbone to fire his buddy, so if it goes bad it's going to go really bad for us.
No Lafleur didn't fire Barry, he finished his contract and they didn't renew it, there's a big difference.

No. 1 - get rid of the 4th qtr. "prevent defense" when we have a small lead. No rush on QB..........best way we lose games!

I like that Hafley different than the past two DC's. Hafley is more a secondary/DB coach while Pettine and Barry were more LB guys. Besides, I feel like GB's front 4 do a pretty good job of getting pressure. Yeah they don't have a guy who is an absolute game wrecker like a Watt, Garrett, Crosby or Bosa. But as far as sacks go: Gary had 9, Preston had 8, Clark had 7.5, Wyatt had 5.5, Brooks and LVN both had 4 as rotational rookies. Then you have guys like Enagbare, Wooden and Slaton who each contributed a few. I feel like they could benefit more from having an experienced pass rushing coach and then having a DC that can improve the secondary. Kind of like how CM3 had Kevin Greene early in his career. Greene wasn't DC, but he helped mold CM3 early.

At first glance it’s concerning to see how many points Boston College let up last year, but there could be so many reasons for that. Hard to be worse than Joey B

Cant imagine BC is getting the best of the best in terms of recruits and transfers. Not to mention guys transferring away hypothetically with NIL and the Portal… however that works. Thats probably got a lot to do with it

Held lower coaching positions in the NFL - went to the college level as a DC - came back to the NFL as a DC with no prior DC experience in the NFL...
No, it's not Hafley's resumé. It's Mike MacDonald's resumé. And just the other day he easily landed a HC job after running a formidable defense in Baltimore for two years.
That's also in the cards for you...

Are we so sure of the “longtime friend of LaFleur” rumor? Your screenshot only seems to show that he was “friend of a friend” via Steno & Saleh. Is that degree of separation that unusual in the NFL (where all coordinator positions are pinnacle careers, & mostly feature guys that have spent 15+ years on D1 & Pro staffs & have thus crossed paths with lots of coaches)?

Sounds like Matt didn’t really want to gut the assistant coaches in def side due to Matt control the coach and the gm control the player. If this doesn’t work maybe it’s time to scrap the idea of hc and gm their own boss and report to the president/ceo.

The biggest problem with our defensive staff is there was no successor or up and comer. The d staff is where new ideas and ambition go to die. The offense has a coordinator, quarterbacks coach and interns groomed to succeed their teachers or move on to achieve to own success. Who on the defensive staff can we say that about? We need to develop in-house candidates to succeed our coordinators!
