Robert Powell was born on Thursday, June 1st, 1944, five days before D-Day, on Tuesday, June 6th, 1944, in Salford, Manchester, England. In 1964, he started his acting career while attending Manchester University. In 1967, he made his film debut, and later landed his first starring role in The Italian Job (1969). Some of his well-known movies include Franco Zeffirelli's Jesus of Nazareth (1977), Ken Russell's Tommy (1975) and Mahler (1974), the sequel or remake of The Thirty Nine Steps (1978), and the popular TV series, Doomwatch (1970). Robert ended his bachelor life, when he married Barbara "Babs" Lord, on Friday, August, 29th, 1975. They are parents of two children (1 son & 1 daughter). In 1982, Robert won the Best Actor award at the Venice Film Festival for his performance in Imperative (1982). He won the best actor award at the Paris Film Festival for Harlequin(1980). For his portrayal of Jesus in Jesus of Nazareth he received best actor awards from TV Times and Italian TV Times, the international arts prize at the Fiuggi Film Festival, grand prize at the Saint-Vincent Film Festival, and a nomination as best actor from The Irish Academy of Film and Television arts. In reference to his role as Jesus in Jesus of Nazareth, Robert said, "I hope Jesus Christ will be the last in my line of sensitive young men for quite a while."
After watching this made for T.V. miniseries when it first came out, I remember going into my bedroom to watch it in private, during the Crucifixion scene I was sobbing uncontrollably, and a few nights later I had a dream I was looking down my street, and as I did, I saw a beautiful white light, similar to stage lighting, come up my block and come right up to me, the next morning I woke up and my heart was full of the love of God, and I told my mother that God had called me to his service! The Lord Jesus has worked many many miracles in my life since then, I pray that those watching this may experience God's cleansing Love, conviction, and Salvation! Amen! Praise God Forever!

I have watched this movie every year since 1977. I was 11 when it was on television for the 1st time. I was saved in 1976. Thank you Lord for your gift of salvation and for dying for our sins so that we may live with you for eternity.

I met Robert Powell years ago and he told me that this great production took 2yrs to complete.Probably the best version ever on the story of Jesus.Powell said that everthing was meticulously down in details.And a star cast that were carefully chosen and very good script that was easy to follow but not weak on storyline.Yes a terrific production by all.And Mr.Powell did a very good acting show.

Thank you for posting Jesus of Nazareth. I'm a 1975 child and I recall this version played in NZ either Easter or Xmas. Last I saw this was Easter 1988 as we migrated to Australia. Seeing it now, it's still my favourite. Production.

Me too. On Easter morning something woke me up early in the morning before anyone in my family got up. I came downstairs and turned the tv on. This was playing. During the crucifix part I was balling my eyes out. All I wanted to do was be the guy on the cross beside Jesus so I could be with Him too that day. I was 5 or 6. I was born again that day.
Same here in the U.S. (Southern California). Every Easter a commercial TV channel would broadcast this during the 70s.
I watched this movie so many time as a child on vcr. Brings me to tears to find it again. Praise be to God. He is worthy of our praise. Halleluyah🙏🏾❤️🙏🏾.

I remember this would come on around Easter as a five part miniseries on NBC in the 80’s. I love this movie and the best Jesus movie of all time.
Also into the 90's. I remember our family would watch this around Easter and later in the year a mini series Lonesome Dove would also air. Sad they dont show it anymore

Though I've seen my fav movie at least 40 times, never before has it caused streams of tears to fall down my face as tonight. Maybe it is my suffering, or maybe the suffering, lies, deception and death I see being caused by the Powers That Be who control this hurting world. I close my prayers every night with, please come Lord, ASAP, and call up and rapture us away, and then come and takeover, and stop this evil slaughter and rule and reign in righteousness.

Also the only person to obey God's commands without fail is Jesus for reason he's God! Then when we came back from our Easter activities we would come home and watch Wizard of Oz . Every year like they would show on TV, Wizard of Oz on Easter Sunday, sometimes, Jesus of Nazareth would come out on Easter Saturday.
