- Darko Milicic is better than LeBron James?
It is very difficult to predict how good NBA Draft prospects will become. But there have been a few times over the last couple decades where a draft take was so bad, it's inexcusable.
In this video I will look back at 7 of the worst NBA Draft takes of all time. Some of these left me absolutely speechless. - Спорт
Good video but Kevin Garnett was not the first player to enter the NBA right out of high school. Darryl Dawkins and Bill Willoughby both did it in the seventies, and Moses Malone went straight to the ABA.
He’s young
@@Ant-je5vu
That's what research is for.
And Shawn Kemp
@@Cartmanrulez I agree. At the same time, from my experience, they don’t know how to
I was gonna school the youngster on NBA history, since he doesn't use Google. But I'll let this stand as his education.
To be fair to Darco, he was drafted by a contending team and never even had a chance. That stunted his growth a lot.
if darko went to san antonio as a rookie under pop and duncan as his senior, his career would've turned out much differently..
Garnett was not the first high school student who went directly to the NBA, one such player is Darryl "Chocolate Thumder" Dawkins who went to the NBA straight out of high school.
And Daryl wasn't the first!
Didn’t Moses Malone make the jump from high school to the NBA?
@@billywall7752 yep, he did
I thought Malone spent like 2 days at the University of Maryland and decided to split for the ABA, but I definitely could be misremembering.
@@donutloverofbacon1225 ABA first.
Honorable mention: Thinking that dominating kids in college (Ayton) is better than dominating grown men in best league in the world not named NBA (Luka). 😅
What a goofy take. Ayton is a really good player. Still entering his prime.
Right, and "dominating is being generous". There were times Ayton completely disappeared despite being clearly the best player on the court, and they also lost in the first round of the tournament. A true #1 pick doesn't lose by 20 to Buffalo!
@Robert Hanief it's the NCAA Tournament. Fantastic players and teams bounce early often. Ayton and Ristic balled hard that game Trier, Alkins, and Jackson-Cartwright never showed up. That team had zero bench presence, and that Buffalo team was severely underseeded, and pundits were saying as such. That Arizona team also went through a bunch of nonsensical dirt because Mark Schlabach at ESPN is a rotten journalist. The starting 5 was often fantastic, but the team was flawed and burned out. Trier was moaning and groaning on selection Sunday about being stuck in Boise. DeAndre was an absolute beast. This idea he disappeared isn't really true. He was the best overall player in college that season.
I live in Portland where our home team, The Trailblazers, passed up Michael Jordan AND Kevin Durant! The Rose City is pretty damp, but not all of that water is from the rain. There are a lot of Trailblazer tears mixed in.
Yeah but no one knew that Jordan would become what he became. The guy they drafted, Sam Bowie, was actually a really good 7 footer out of Kentucky. He just couldn't stay healthy. Also, you guys already had Clyde at the shooting guard so at the time, drafting Bowie over Jordan made sense. Same with KD and Greg Oden. Greg was also a REALLY good 7 footer at Ohio State. Had he been able to stay healthy, I think you guys would've been very happy with him.
@@derekstewart6704 the drafts at the time did make sense. No arguments there. They had Clyde Drexler and LaMarcus Aldridge, at each of their respective positions. However Aldridge and Durant had proven chemistry, and both Oden, and Bowie, had a history of injury. Not sure why they passed on Julius Erving though. Every NBA team have picks that they'd like take back. Portland's just happened be 3 of the best players to ever take the court.
@@derekstewart6704 Well Bowie was injured just about his entire college career, so I'm really surprised he went that high. Same way with Oden, he played one semester of college ball, no reason to think he would get healthy for the pros.
I like your style and how you get right into the information. Best wishes to you on your UA-cam endeavors. New sub here.
KG was not the first to make the jump.

My thoughts too… didn’t even finish the video. Get the facts right.
Love this. It's so rare the tape has been rewound and diarrhea of the mouth is exposed. This should happen annually in every sport. Especially preseason college football rankings. Whenever a player or team falls way below expectations, these same jack wagons who predicted success, openly question what happened to the team or player they projected so high. They never take their medicine and admit just how foolishly wrong they were. Instead, they keep their job and clout only to do something similar the following year. Follow ups like this need to expose just who got it wrong and how many x's they've failed at their own "expertise."
They could all just adopt the Stephen A. Smith approach. If he predicts a team will be good and they aren't, he never says he was wrong. He just blames the team and says they "let him down".
Your takes definitely are solid I feel. I think with Steph though, the concerns were warranted. Simply because, it was a different style of game back when he was drafted. The game didn’t really start to switch to the outside dominate shot like it is these days, and there’s absolutely no way you could’ve ever predicted he would’ve ever been better than THE Reggie Miller. So they were absolutely wrong, but not outlandish takes for the time
I would challenge all yall to do predictions for the next 5-10 years and make it public 😂
Yeah if you pay me the salary of a gm why not
As a Pistons fan, I would’ve loved if Cleveland listened to taking Darko. We won a ring that year which shadowed it, but damn we missed out big time on that draft class
Great video

Couldn't be more wrong on Kevin Garnett being first from high school.
First three coming to mind are Darryl Dawkins, Moses Malone and Shawn Kemp.
PS: the spelling was fantastic in this video.
You gotta give Mark Jackson a lot of credit for Steph Curry being the player that he is today. They got rid of Monte Ellis and he allowed Steph and Klay to play and discover their game.
The Gotlieb one is a classic
I admit I wasn’t high on Luka thought he was picked too high but damn am I wrong. Luka magic!!!
Most analysis don't have faith in international player's
Luka was playing at an MVP level in the 2nd best league (outside of the NBA) for Real Madrid at 16. I remember the exhibition game vs. Carmelo/Russ/PG OKC team and he was giving them werk
but if you saw his over seas footage from 15 and up youd be more surprised he didnt higher tbh
@@trobtx3538 so basically yall never heard of Ricky Rubio.. That shyt doesn't always translate into NBA success.. THESE days with this softazz league it's a bit different though🤷🏿♂️
@@lordtrill7731 rickey was full grown at 12 😆 luka was already at a wild stature for his age. So i mean he had skill and was a bigger player...go watch the footage of the two players and tell me they should be in the same braket like you put them in
Nash played a year in Phoenix before going to Dallas. Fact checking is important.
Darryl Dawkins was dradted in 1975 into the NBA straight out of high school, also Moses Malone was drafted * from high school) into the ABA in 1974. He (Moses) would move over to the NBA year(s) later. He went to the Houston Rockets and later to the 76ers.
Just saying.
Malone was with the Buffalo Braves, but they apparently didn't like his attitude.
I'm a Kings fan and i remember when Domantas Sabonis was drafted in 2016, the draft analysts had nothing good to say about him and claimed that he was only drafted because of his last name and his dad's reputation. I remember that draft take specifically because it was the most disrespectful draft pick analysis i've ever seen, and i paid close attention to his development since his OKC days and now he's on the Kings and i just can't say enough just how stupid those draft night analysts are.
Very good video. Interestingly, Darko may not have had a solid NBA career but he did win an NBA Championship. That is still something to be proud of. But of course, LBJ is one of the greatest.
"Miličić saw limited playing time during his first season with the Pistons, but did become the youngest player to appear in an NBA Finals game (18 years and 356 days) and won an NBA championship just five days later when the Pistons defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2004 NBA Finals."
It's sad that here in Serbia all we remember Milicic for is cussing out the refs after a game with Turkey.
Btw I’m so happy you brought up Darko! He came to our team here in Detroit and let’s just say we won the championship despite his draft, not because of lol….it’s funny how many top players we turned down because of him, thanks to our very own Joe Dumars!
Just imagine if you guys got just one spot better you would’ve had Lebron.
Skipping Melo, Bosh, and D-Wade for Darko is just ridiculous
if darko went to san antonio as a rookie under pop and duncan as his senior, his career would've turned out much differently..
KG was not first
To be fair, if my choices were Mitch Richmond and straight-out-of-highschool Kobe, I’d start Mitch for sure.
Darko honestly was never given a chance. It’s a sad truth.
Kevin Garrett was the first high-school player to make the nba??????? Come on man do better
He was the first in 20 years at the time but you called it; def not the first ever drafted out of HS.
Exactly
Darryl Dawkins was 1st.
@@danlower7834 reggie harding was I believe in the 60s
He was the first drafted in the lottery
Why is Stephen A. still considered an expert. He’s wrong consistently.
Need to do some research. There were many NBA players who went to directly to the NBA from high school before Kevin Garnet did it, including someone named Moses Malone. He did alright for himself.
Moses didn't do it. He went to the ABA.
@@danlower7834 - You're right. He went from playing high school basketball to professional, but ABA, not NBA. 🤦 Thanks for the correction. I'll double check next time.
Draft experts are as accurate as meteorologists
Good video, Kg was the 3rd hs athlete to go straight to the NBA though! God Bless
3rd? Name the only other 2! Then I'll list a few others.
Johnny Flynn? Forgot all about him. Great pick wolves
They even had TWO picks and picked TWO point guards, neither named Steph. Rubio was better than Flynn at least. Some teams are destined to be bad.
The best thing about UA-camrs who cover American sports is that they get 100k views on any subject without getting any of the details correct and without having anything interesting to say whatsoever
You could “nearly” have a game between 2 Hall of Fame starting 5s from players drafted outta HS. Key note; nearly all HS kids drafted were BIG MEN, so there aren’t 4 “Guards” in the NBA HOF after going preps to pros. So, we’ll have Lebron & Kobe running point for each squad, & all stars Rashard Lewis & Monta Ellis filling the last 2 G spots.

1:38 Technically you're correct, but that title still resides with Moses Malone. He was drafted into the ABA prior to their merger with the NBA. He still holds the distinction of the first high schooler drafted into the pros.
"In 1995, Kevin Garnett became the first high school athlete to make the jump straight to the NBA" -- technically he was the 3rd
shawn kemp was a juco player that was counted as a hs player
But KG was the first who did it in 1995. So technically correct
@@underhill83 technically correct because he was the first player THAT YEAR to do it? Even though it implies it was before guys like Darrell Dawkins?
I was at the Target Center watching the draft on the big screen when the wolves passed on Steph. pretty weird day. Got a text saying Michael Jackson had died
Darryl Dawkins and Moses Malone went directly from high school to the NBA, unless my memory fails me.
GReat job but I think there were high school players going direct to pros before Garnett. I think Daryl Dawkins did, and Moses Malone, but he went ABA first and think there were others. Now Sam Bowie was a terrible pick, he had been injured his entire college career but then got drafted , number one I think. Same way with Greg Oden, I think he played one semester of college ball, and it was a great semester but he was drafted over Durant.
Darryl Dawkins jumped from high school to the NBA before Garnet.
Sean Kemp also went straight to the NBA, so Garnett was nowhere near being the first to do so.
Shawn*
It was definitely David Kahn who said that on Darko
Unpopular opinion, but when I make predictions, I want to be proven wrong. For example, I thought Steph Curry was overrated and my belief came back in 2017, when he was hyped as this magnificent 3-point shooter, then upon my second game in keeping up with him, he went 0-11 in 3PT range against the 76ers.
Now, Curry is making more of his shots consistently and he keeps up the same energy for the entire duration of a game. He's also a record-holder for most points made of 3PTers, and he proved that he can still win titles without the pile-on/super team behind him. I now like the guy... and yes, he is this magnificent 3PT shooter.
D Will was a tweener and still had a nice career. Getting drafted by Minnesota and Rick Adelman ensured he was fkd though.
This is one of those things that LeBron kids forget about. LeBron came into the league when high school kids were accepted and loved and coveted. LeBron was given the keys to a team from Day 1. Kobe entered the league in 1996, when coaches and GMs laughed at high school kids. he was forced to ride the bench for years because of that stigma. Kobe was robbed of at least 3 years in the beginning and 3 years from injury at the end. and THATS why the stats dont matter or compare.
Victor is going to get injured alot
I could see that
Garnet came out of hs some 30 years after the first kid did
That Jordan pool take looking like it might be true. But tbh all you got to do is put baddies court side and he might perform lol
Kevin Garnett wasn't the first high school player gong straight in the NBA. There were a few before him.
I admit it. I was one of those guys that thought Carmelo was a better pick than LeBron. But to be fair, we had more film of CA. He seemed more complete and polished, having just put on a clinic in the NCAA tourney, putting up almost 27ppg and 12 rpg. Those are some pretty gaudy numbers. Who could blame me?
Moses Malone was the first to come straight out of high school to the nbA
give Dallas credit to scout oversea talents
Moses Malone was the first HS to jump to NBA
He’s also the first MVP that didn’t go to college
Reggie harding was also the first to do it in 1962
I always thought it was Darryl Dawkins
Nope

on Kobe ...18 years old entering the league have had success in the league such as Lebron and even Bynum. But yes so many have had maturity issues and work ethic issues, Lenny Cooke comes to mind. Nobody could predict Kobe he would be the hardest worked in the last 30 years or so.
A lot of it also comes down to where you go. All the things said about Steph Curry is true. Undersized. He does not have elite athleticism, or passing ability, he can be but defensively is not thought of as all NBA defensive teamer. Curry is the only NBA player that has been able to dominate and win it all with outside shooting. Dame is stuck in 2 and done zone. Miller could not do it. How many teams could Curry win it all with? I am not necessarily saying he is a system qb but how many rings would have on team such as the mid 90s Pacers.
steph bust thing is because they were projecting his health and availability
Taking Kyrie was a mistake. The Cavs were in the basement every year he played until Lebron returned to CLE. Lebron dragged Kyrie to the finals kicking and screaming. Then Kyrie didn't like the fact that Lebron was the unquestionable leader of the team, so he blew the team up to go play for the Celtics then the Nets, both of which have been unmitigated disasters. So let's review: everywhere Kyrie has played has been an utter failure, except when he was playing with the best player of this generation.
To be fair the Darko take wasn’t outrageous at the time. Maybe he wasn’t better than Lebron(I didn’t think that, I thought Melo was better). But he was being compared to KG
I think some of the reasonings were acceptable conceptually although have been proved wrong after.
There’s some level of reasoning to saying that in general 18 year olds aren’t as ready. There are obvious and well know exceptions (and naturally Kobe is one of them) but that generic observation is not completely wrong …
Steph is not a pure point guard indeed. I don’t think that bit is fundamentally wrong… what they failed is to realize how his other skills (comb of executional shooting, movement without the ball and agility) would transform the game…
Steph took a long time to become what he is. And it was a valid assessment at the time, but he is an outlier
Stephen Curry with a 40 inch vert
KG was not the first player to come out of HS to the NBA. Moses Malone was.
Gallinari was good; and Porzingis could've been the next Dirk had he not gotten injured.
Honestly, they were right. Kobe's first two years were pretty weak. Probably would have done just as well at a big program.
I mean some of Steph’s weakness definitely still apply today still not a true point and lateral quickness
Everyone with hindsight is always 6/6
