  • “Why Was There No Room in the Inn?”
    “Coming to Bethlehem” Series
    Luke 2:7
History points to a specific place where Jesus would be born, and history also points to which family Jesus must be born into.
Jesus was born in a house. Inside of the courtyard homes that archaeologists have found all around the Church of the Nativity, would be a cave.
The actual church of the Nativity commemorates Jesus’ place of birth in a cave underneath the front of the church building where a manger can be seen hewn out of stone.
Some might argue that there was no room in “the inn” and so Jesus was born away from most people. However, “the inn” suffers from a translation problem. (Luke 2:7)
Mary and Joseph arrive in Bethlehem for a family reunion and when her time to give birth came, she went to the utility cave because there was no room in the guest room, “kataluma,” much less privacy.
God sent His Beloved Son to Earth to a family to love and care for him. Mary and Joseph were not abandoned in a strange city.
It is in the context of family that we learn how to love and look after each other. Jesus was no exception to this understanding.
