I've had my new Brother PE800 for a few days. I've started reading my manual and I've watched a bunch of YT videos for beginner's Information. I haven't even finished watching all of your #1 Beginner video and I had to stop watching to tell you how much I'm enjoying it. You're concise and practical and I really appreciate that. Now back to the video...
I am brand new to all of this. As a matter of fact, my machine (Brother PE800) won't even arrive until tomorrow. I have been watching tons of tutorials and helpful tips on UA-cam. This video is absolutely the best of any that I've seen. I learned more in 12 minutes from you than I've learned in the last month from all of the other videos I've seen. Like others- I've watched tons of other videos and read blogs, etc., but your videos are my favorite. I'm new to embroidery and your videos are such a great help and build confidence in this new hobby. You are easy to listen to (I've stopped watching many videos from others that had a voice and style I just couldn't stand for more than 30 seconds!). Plus your pace is perfect, you have a great sense of humor -and just give us the information we need. Thanks so much for creating this series for anybody that wants to learn the basics and beyond!
I watched this series because my sister bought a Baby Lock Altair and is getting started with embroidery. I quilt and watch a great deal of quilting tutorials on UA-cam. You are fantastic at teaching, with a great approach to tutorials. Your pacing (speech and editing), description and detail shots and tips are great. Very accessible and confidence building for the viewer. Your dolls are amazing, but there is a market for you to do more series on embroidery and how to tackle a range of products. I hope you will consider that. There are many out there that could use your coaching.

Thanks. Great advice. And yeah, I too can't stress how important it is to start with supplied designs. Those have been tested with the machine and they are made so they look right the first time. It is really important to those machine manufacturers to help the user succeed. Plus it helps you learn the machine.
Lol I did not even think of getting cotton fabric for practicing, I started randomly destroying me and my boyfriend's t-shirts for this. I'm so silly. VERY useful advice, thank you. I almost bought an "assortment" from amazon. Decided to check UA-cam for some advice first. Glad I did. Working through this list and will take it slow. I appreciate the logic and advice on how to prevent issues as well as save money in the long term.
Thank you for the advice on thread. I have sewn with rayon on my old PE150 with beautiful results but i do now prefer the newer polyester. I also have had luck using colored serger thread in the bobbin if i am concerned with bobbin thread showing on top. I had trouble for a while with bobbin thread showing even after loosening the tension. I finally figured out the bobbin case in the machine was defective. I replaced it and then it stitched without show through. I do like color in the bobbin for towels. The design looks neat on both sides:) even though I m starting over from not stitching for years due ti illness I’m hoping some of my supplies will still be usable. I’m watching a lot of videos on machine embroidery for usb machines. I learned embroidery on a machine that used the memory cards with a card reader writer box you have been most helpful since I’m basically starting over.
SO glad I found you!!!! My machine is still on its way to me. I will only receive it next week. Listening to you I feel I have saved a ton of money by not rushing into supplies, but only buying the minimum for right now!!! Thank you so much!!!

Great series thanks. Also I have the same wall storage I think 😅 going to be looking for the holders for rolls of stabiliser now. Off to Ikea then. Also I’ve used un bleached calico for practice never had too many issues but that’s usually on my other machines so will bear in mind for machine embroidery.
Most people recommend tear-away for tea towels so the backside looks nice. But if the design is dense, the tear-away may not hold up well enough and a cutaway would give a better quality stitchout.

I know your machine is much more advanced, but have you ever run into a thread shredding problem, especially, when I embroider on a crewneck. I would love to hear some advice or solutions from you. Thanks Jancat! What you don't see in my videos is the old Viking Designer 1 machine that eats thread like crazy! These are some things that could be causing shredding: brand or weight of thread, using new/correct needle, problems in the thread path, fabric is too thick for your machine motor, or even a nick or scratch on your needle plate or bobbin case can chew up the thread. But if you're having the issue mostly with thicker fabrics like sweatshirts (I assume that's what you meant by crewneck?) then switching needles might be your solution. Look for a size 14 ballpoint needle. Also, a separate thread stand can do wonders for shredding/breaking problems.
I have been searching for understandable tutorials on machine embroidery and your's is the only one that made sense and did not try to sell me expensive, unnecessary items. Your instructions are to the point and clear. Thank you so much! I do have one question. I do use a 40w embroidery thread for my quilting and am just starting to use my Brother ns2750D embroidery machine. You mentioned using either a size 11 or 19 needle. Wouldn't the 11 be too fine (small) for 40w thread? Or does the "embroidery size 11" have a larger hole and groove? My does have a slight sheen to it. Thank you in advance. Thank you for that sweet compliment! The 75/11 embroidery needles work great for 40 wt thread. I also use the 90/14 size needle if I'm stitching something thick like towels or fleece on my older machine, but your brother can probably use the 75/11 for that as well. Hope that helps!!

glad you enjoy the videos! The Babylock Verve is nice. It's a little pricey but you get free classes with it. Larger hoops raise the price, and getting an embroidery/sewing combo machine costs more than embroidery only. You might look at the Eversewn Sparrow. And you can buy used machines that have been cleaned and serviced by a dealer that have larger hoops and more features. Other than that, just keep researching until you find a machine that works for you. I started on a Viking 4x4" hoop and upgraded several years later.
Thank you for your beginner videos. I want to start embroidery for myself on all kinds of fabrics. I want a stand-alone machine, not a Disney one, and hesitate between Bernette b70 deco and Janome mc 550e unless you could advise a better one. I don't mind handling software and I am looking for quality. What is your recommendation? Thank you.
Both of those are solid machines with many happy users. If budget is not an issue, get the biggest hoop size you can afford. The Janome 550e has a huge hoop (8x14") so you will be able to do most anything with it.

I have an Accuquilt cutter. They have embroidery files that work on the shapes I cut. I don’t understand how to download them to get them from my computer to a thumb drive. Have you done a video on this?

Thanks! As long as your designs will fit in the 5x7 hoop, then the PE800 would be great for stitching flannel. But the PE800 is still out of stock worldwide except for price-gouged models over $800. (It was $650 on Amazon a year ago.)

I think the Verve is a good machine but it does have a small hoop. Babylock and Brother are made in the same factory and have the same menus and features so maintenance is the same on both. I've ordered parts from SewingPartsOnline and they are a good company. It's a tough decision you must make, made tougher since so many machines are out of stock now.
Does the ink in the Frixion pen's reappear when the air temperature is cold? I heard this about some kind of fabric pen but I don't recall which pen was used.
I've heard those rumor too so I did some research. The frixion ink will reappear if it gets cold enough. (down to -10 Celcius or 14 degrees Farenheit) So if you're marking on fabric that's going to get cold, be careful where you mark. (quilters who ship quilts in winter have had problems) Typically the center marks for machine embroidery will be covered by stitches so it wouldn't be an issue anyway. Or you could always stick with chalk or air erasable markers instead. Hope that helps!!
The PE800 is still sold out and the se1600 is the same machine as the Flourish 2 that I recommend in the video. So get the SE1600 if your budget allows it.
I'm back with a question lol. My machine came with a spool of 90 wt bobbin thread. When looking at embroidery supplies online I see bobbin thread in 60 wt and 90 wt. Can you explain when to use the different weights? And do the prewound bobbins come in both weights?
Hi Jenny! Yes, prewound bobbins come in both 60 or 90 wt as well as various sizes or "classes" for different machines. The 90wt is thinner than 60wt. Brother machines calibrate or set their bobbin tension for 90wt thread so it's best to stick with that. Later on, if you're doing free standing lace or towels where you want the back to match the front, you can try thicker threads in the bobbin and adjust the upper tension to compensate. But that's not something I recommend for beginners. 😁

Oh no, not tulle! That's a tough one because of the open weave. Thanks for sharing your lessons learned!

Other than that, just keep researching until you find a machine that works for you. I started on a Viking 4x4" hoop and upgraded several years later.

The rolls of stabilizer are hung on ikea pegboards. They have a "roll holder" for paper towels that fits up to 8-12" wide stabilizer rolls.
Thank you for your beginner videos. I want to start embroidery for myself on all kinds of fabrics. I want a stand-alone machine, not a Disney one, and hesitate between Bernette b70 deco and Janome mc 550e unless you could advise a better one. I don't mind handling software and I am looking for quality. What is your recommendation? Thank you.
Both of those are solid machines with many happy users. If budget is not an issue, get the biggest hoop size you can afford. The Janome 550e has a huge hoop (8x14") so you will be able to do most anything with it.

What about Mettler? I have a bunch of that.
Mettler is good. If you're using the small spools, just be careful the thread doesn't wrap around the spool and get stuck.

That is the right kind (linked above) but Amazon is an expensive place to buy fabric. 😉. Any quilters cotton or broadcloth works for practice.

I have an Accuquilt cutter. They have embroidery files that work on the shapes I cut. I don’t understand how to download them to get them from my computer to a thumb drive. Have you done a video on this?

Thanks! As long as your designs will fit in the 5x7 hoop, then the PE800 would be great for stitching flannel. But the PE800 is still out of stock worldwide except for price-gouged models over $800. (It was $650 on Amazon a year ago.)

The only thing that makes me hesitate is the 4 x 4 embroidery area. The Brother has 5 x 7 and the Tension is automatic. And I also believe the maintenance for Brother must be more reasonable than with Baby Lock machines. Thanks a lot for your kind help. Lots of Love.
I think the Verve is a good machine but it does have a small hoop. Babylock and Brother are made in the same factory and have the same menus and features so maintenance is the same on both. I've ordered parts from SewingPartsOnline and they are a good company. It's a tough decision you must make, made tougher since so many machines are out of stock now.
Does the ink in the Frixion pen's reappear when the air temperature is cold? I heard this about some kind of fabric pen but I don't recall which pen was used.
I've heard those rumor too so I did some research. The frixion ink will reappear if it gets cold enough. (down to -10 Celcius or 14 degrees Farenheit) So if you're marking on fabric that's going to get cold, be careful where you mark. (quilters who ship quilts in winter have had problems) Typically the center marks for machine embroidery will be covered by stitches so it wouldn't be an issue anyway. Or you could always stick with chalk or air erasable markers instead. Hope that helps!!

The PE800 is still sold out and the se1600 is the same machine as the Flourish 2 that I recommend in the video. So get the SE1600 if your budget allows it.

My machine came with a spool of 90 wt bobbin thread. When looking at embroidery supplies online I see bobbin thread in 60 wt and 90 wt. Can you explain when to use the different weights? And do the prewound bobbins come in both weights?
Hi Jenny! Yes, prewound bobbins come in both 60 or 90 wt as well as various sizes or "classes" for different machines. The 90wt is thinner than 60wt. Brother machines calibrate or set their bobbin tension for 90wt thread so it's best to stick with that. Later on, if you're doing free standing lace or towels where you want the back to match the front, you can try thicker threads in the bobbin and adjust the upper tension to compensate. But that's not something I recommend for beginners. 😁
