A theory on why the actual Painted Lady spirit didn’t help is because she’s a Spirit of the River and the river being so polluted made her lose the connection to the town. Them cleaning it caused them to reconnect
I had that theory too but you’d think that would have been the case for haebai since his domain was destroyed but I guess it’s cuz they’re different types of spirits
@@Unknown69846 I think the difference between being dirty and destroyed. The river wasn't gone, so she was more weakened than angry. In Haebai's case, he thought the forest was eradicated, which caused a malicious transformation of spiritual revenge. Once Haebai had hope that the forest could return, he basically shut down as a spirit and became perhaps more like the Painted Lady, waiting quietly for his domain to return to its former health.

This is almost certainly the case. The river spirit in ATLA was pretty obviously influenced by Spirited Away's polluted river spirit scene, as the creators have used Miyazaki movies as inspiratipn for a lot of ATLA.
It actually was confirmed that the pollution drove her away.

A cool detail in the scenes with Zuko and Iroh is how a lot of the shots make it look like Zuko was the one imprisoned

9:54 What you don't understand though is Aang hasn't been allowed to be a kid for a very long time. You're not wrong but they have to wait for the eclipse anyway and he deserves to chill and have fun for a change. He is also a very outgoing person, so this must have been burning inside of him for all that time.
The ability to bend lava would actually fall under earthbending. When you think about it, lava is literally just hot liquid earth.
I love how much Aang grew. In the Imprisoned episode, he missed his que to help Katara’s elaborate hoax. This time she could completely trust him to lift her on time lol.
I mean while *spoiler for Korra* it is established that lava is advanced earth bending, at the same time in this show everytime we saw anyone controlling lava it was fire nation Avatars so I have had the theory that maybe fire benders can move lava somewhat while earth benders are the only ones to be able to create lava and have finesse with it.
Could be like mud. Mud can be bended by water- and earthbenders.
@@dm_dude Or, based on the fact that *spoilers spoilers spoilers for a future episode* we've seen Sozin bend the heat out of lava, certain *aspects* of it can be bended by both. Earthbenders can move it around, but can't cool it. Firebenders can control the temperature, but can't control its movement.

It's pretty optional in some places. I stopped really doing it around second grade, although, it was mostly because the "One nation under God" part wouldn't exactly jive with someone who isn't Jewish, Christian, or Muslim, or even adjacent to one of those three.

It's been theorized that she becomes much less psychotic here because they are away from Fire Nation responsibilities. She has no one below her to demand respect from and no one above her to impress. Its just the gang chilling on the beach. Once Fire Nation politics come into play again, her psycho switch gets flipped again.

I agree. She is lonely and under extreme pressure. She may have bullied Zuko for a long time, but he's been gone, learned and grown. She hasn't had a genuine outside experience

He can do it under the avatar state because an avatar before him learned how to use it and now he gains that knolege for a limited time too. He can infact learn it on his own if given proper time and training, since the avatar can use all forms of bending.

9:54 Although I do think Aang can be a bit irresponsible at times (i.e. not training as hard as Katara in the NP), I think it is unrealistic to expect him to be training/working 24/7 and not experience fun. I don't think anyone would want to be the Avatar if it meant having to live a life only training, fighting, studying, and serving others if they themselves were never able to do something for their own enjoyment/benefit. They would never be able to help others properly if they haven't experienced what it is to be human. Essentially, how can the Avatar be the bridge for spirits and humanity if they can't even be a part of it. This is just something I wanted to add, I love your reactions and how expressive you are, it has been a fun time!

@@gazelle_diamond9768 maybe Shri Bai is more vengeful than the painted lady, or he can still exist even with a destroyed forest. Though we only seen a little of the painted lady, maybe either that water was too polluted for her to come anywhere, it made her uncomfortable, or maybe she just felt like the people were too lazy to clean the river and she did nothing? I’m thinking that maybe it’s the first because after the river is clean she says thank you to Katara.

So one sided claiming all the betraying was on Zuko's side. Hell, here Zuko is begging for guidance here but is being stonewalled.
So apparently Iroh's love is conditional, he only gives advice if you follow him like a puppet. And when he actually shows a desire for help and to listen , he is ignored. Just because Iroh tears up doesn't absolve him of outright shutting Zuko out, in my eyes. As shown, Zuko doesn't make good decisions when frustrated and left to his own solutions.

Personally, The Painted Lady is my least favorite episode of Season 3. I don't think it's bad, but very rarely does an "environmental message episode" of a Nickelodeon series ever seem to work well without appearing condescending to the kids watching the show. That said, I still wouldn't put it in the bottom 10 episodes of the entire 7 Seasons of ATLA & ATLOK.

She's not the spirit of the sea, she's a river spirit, the river was polluted and kept her from being able to help them. The spirit of the sea is the ocean spirit, which is the black fish in the oasis in book 1.

"she is the spirit from the sea" doesn't imply that the entire ocean is her domain, seas are, afterall, not oceans. While it's not an accurate statement to say she is from the sea, it's still vague enough to glean as "She is a Water Spirit". And typically, in various media, Water Spirits are heavily tied to their domain, due to them usually being the embodiment or guardian of that exact body of water.
