Perfect length, no fluff, well edited, and fantastic information. One tip I'd add for beginners would be to carve the bowl first. This might assist when correcting overcut in the bowl.
A real treat to watch. It’s so nice to see a demonstration where the presenter isn’t in love with the sound of his own voice and just gets on with the job. Thank you for a really inspirational video.
Great lesson, thank you for sharing it. I bought some carving knives from you several years back. They have much longer handles than the one you're using for carving the bowl in this video. I cannot remember what you called them years back. It struck me as a Native American name. Just found the name by scrolling down your list of spoon carving videos: Mocotaugan is the word I was looking for. When you get to 73, the remembering gets a bit tougher. Thanks again for the fine video.
Hi Ben, this is probably the best instructional video about spoon carving I have seen yet! Thank you for not only showing technique but also highlighting safety aspects of handling axe and knife!
On of the best spoon carving videos ever! You are really trying to keep it as simple as possible also for people who have English not as their mother tongue ;-) Always one eye on the safty and and the other one on the result! I'm starting my business with spoons and bowls right now in Sweden and I'm very glad, I found you here on UA-cam! By the way - great homepage! Greets from the North, Peter!
Great explanation , thanks . Watched this with my 5 yr old daughter and she was interested throughout, now wants to Make spoon with me this weekend !!! Awesome Cheers Rob
the best spoon carving tutorial i have had the pleasure to watch . a great refresher for me , am lookin forward to getting out there with my axe tomorrow thank you for sharing your skills
You are an excellent teacher. Really clear advice and demonstration. I feel like I could actually make this spoon. Obviously my axe control is nothing like yours. Thanks for the video
I've just purchased my first Crooked knife and I"m about to start learning to make spoons and bowls. This tutorial is my starting point. Thank you very much for it.
Wow, this has to be the best instructional video I’ve seen yet on wood spoon carving covering all the basics. Thanks for sharing and inspiring me, can’t wait for my axe to come in so I can get started! Definitely subscribing to your channel.
What a fantastic video. Information delivered perfectly. Almost could not believe that it was 20 minutes long. Kept me interested from start to finish.
fantastic! you are a very good teacher. i enjoyed watching you but now i'll be watching it again doing it. thank you so much for this. Cheers for Canada!
Thanks for the tutorial, I do a bit of metal and woodwork, so I'm gonna try this out. Also, the safety are excellent. Not only do you know what you are doing, but you're making sure we do too.
I really enjoyed your video. It is a very good explanation in every step of working. I watched a lot of videos about spooncarving, but yours is really the best. Thanks a lot !
I often remind myself how you work (and watch you videos when its cold in the workshop) and how its inspired me. I often find I have gone off at a tangent over the year.... lol and a quick reminder really helps (and I cut faster funnily enough)
Ben, I don't know about carving spoons but I know about backs! Your lower back will give you problems in a few years. You need to raise your chopping block so you're not bent over so much. Try and stand as straight up as possible. Nice vid and lots of advice, most on the safest way of cutting. Give your lower back some consideration as well.
BOY! can I agree with that! At 69 I'm really paying for it big time. Now if I bend over for even a few minutes, I'm feeling for the next hour or two. Save your back now and you won't have to pay for it later.
Hi Ben, thank you for making such a great tutorial. I've been struggling with spoon carving but your video just answered a lot of questions. Also, the quality of the image is great. Very appreciated!
Hi Ben Congratulations on this 'safety first' demonstration. You are an experienced craftsman with the skills to transmit clearly to others. Excellent combination. Thank You. Sally, in France 🇫🇷 - Dorset Born. Itching to try this but will start with a spatula!
Hi Sally, many thanks for the comment and glad you found the video useful. Good luck with the spatula and if you need more help let us know. Happy carving, Cheers Ben
Just found this video and find it far superior to others on the same subject. In reviewing the comments I took note of one expressing concern with lower back issues using your axe technique. After 2 back surgeries I would not be able to use the axe as you have. But I will use your shaping instructional with a shaving horse and drawknife to allow me to stand up when I finish. Ha
Hi Ben Yep followed your example and split in half. Glad to know Hazel is ok! I planted 20 about 10 years ago + my hedgerow!! Herefordshire, this explains the beautiful view from your workshop. 😉
I just started carving a spoon last night and ended up slicing nicely into my thumb, so it's very good to go back and see the proper techniques for it. Although the spoon does look a brilliant shade of brown now :)
As I was watching the video I was thinking "man, that guy has a super nice blade, I wonder what it is?" Checked is website after the video ended and was blown away when I realized that he made it. Awesome!
This was a fantastic video! great introduction into the world of green spoon carving. I really want to have ago at spoon carving, the idea of the beauty of the everyday is something I believe in very strongly with myself training to become a potter making functional tableware for use in the home, and spoons like the one you made here are so beautiful not only in aesthetic but function as well! top notch stuff hope to be making spoons like that myself one day! hanks again.
Man...!! I just wanted to say great video... I had a blast checking this video out... And know Bc of you I have a general knowledge on how to make a spoon ... Thanks bro... Keep it up
Really enjoyed the vid. May have to give this a try. I thoroughly enjoyed the accent also, I have a colleague from the UK that has the same accent. Thanks for the work.
Nice job, just the type of spoon shape I like. You did good on the details as well. The one thing I wish you had added at the end is some advice on treating the wood so it's food safe. (Because of the acids in some foods can get into the wood fibers.)
Ben enjoyed the video and bought a spoon knife and ordered a crook from Wcknives and really anxious too get started. Your a fine gentleman to watch and listen to so I believe I'll hang in here for a while. But the further info. I didn't seem to make out and if you find the time I would like for you to drop me a line on that.
As a newbie, I have to say that this is one of the most helpful videos I've seen. Great work.
Starting now, I feel the same way.
Same here, best tutorial so far. Well done!
Clear, concise, just what I needed.
Same here. Hes good.
Agreed - very simple, useful and immediately practical. I love the emphasis on safety.
