80 years ago tonight my grandfather climbed into a C-47. A 20 year old man with a new daughter, he served with distinction in D Company 2/506 PIR. His 19 year old brother was a tanker, one of the few that made it ashore from the 4th Infantry in the first waves the next day on Utah beach. Both men returned home to their families and quiet lives. We will never see their like again.
My great grandfather Bill was a pilot of a Lancaster in one of his night raids I’m not sure when but my grandmother knows he and his co pilot had their parachutes strapped to them that night. During the mission they were attacked by a German fighter causing an explosion that blew the pilots out of the plane they were alive the rest of the crew in plane fell to earth all of whom sadly perished Bill landed safely in the backyard of a German family. He said they were nice but had to call the police. He was taken to a pow camp where he and the pows felt they were living on ‘borrowed time’ they attempted to dig their way out and discreetly got rid of the soil by holding it in their trousers and slowly releasing it into the yard. There is actually a movie about this The Great Escape I think it’s called. I can’t remember if he escaped or If the war ended first but he ended up surviving the war walking all the way home and going on to have a daughter (my grandmother) but sadly he died while testing a plane for the RAF when it malfunctioned and he lost control and crashed. Here I am, here we are, for D-Day 80. Happy 80th D-Day. Let us always remember this day and honor those who had fought.
80 years ago my grandfather landed as part of the second wave. He only talked about it once and Saving Private Ryan did not convey the true horror he saw that day. I miss you Pop Pop, you will always be my hero.
It's that time of the year again.
Today is the 80th anniversary of d-day.
Lets us remember the men who fought to save europe

80 Years ago history was made.
We aren't able to thank them enough, but we can honor their legacy.
My late father fought on Omaha Beach. He also fought at Iwo Jima. Thanks be to God he came home from WWII and married his childhood sweetheart.
God bless him, yourself and your family.
