- For more than fifteen years the extremist group Al Shabaab has been fighting a bloody insurgency in Somalia.

Now, as President Biden redeploys American troops to the country, are the group winning the fight?
Formed in 2002, by 2008 they controlled much of southern Somalia.
They soon pledged allegiance to Al Qaeda and began conducting attacks at home and abroad.
In September 2013 they killed nearly 70 people in the Westgate shopping mall attack in Kenya's capital Nairobi.
Then again in Kenya in April 2015 Al Shabaab militants killed 148 people at Garissa University College.
Back home in the Somali capital Mogadishu they carried out their most deadly attack in October 2017, killing more than five hundred people in a massive truck bombing.
In the years that have followed, the group's attacks have become routine.
They often kill dozens of civilians a month, as they battle the African Union troops there to try and keep them at bay.
Now emboldened by the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan following the US withdrawal, the group are cementing control of their territory, with the aim to take the whole country and implement strict Sharia law.
At the moment, Al Shabaab control vast swathes of central and southern Somalia but their reach spreads far further, with Somali government control diminishing.
Our correspondent Jamal Osman obtained rare access to film in Al Shabaab territory and travelled to their de facto capital Jilib.

Al-Shabaab's claim that they don't target civilians is ridiculous - they very often target hotels & restaurants.
At the end of the day , just like Afghanistan. People on the ground views will count. So far the Somali government refused the public 1 persons vote even. So why not focus worrying on stopping corruption and helping people in honest way. Somalia is more then 25 year's in a mess.

The reason is very clear. It is because the reporter is a native. His knowledge and concept of the indeginous Somali life, of which Alshabab were brought up, is what makes him see them from a native perspective. Moreover he is a Muslim himself, a Somali born of Somalian parents and ancestry. Although significant, not just the above, but also the deep asymmetry in Somali culture itself has a bearing on his conceptualization of all that is happening there.

The day the world was watching the chaos in Kabul airport after US’s abrupt withdrawal one thing that came into my mind was Somalia. The reason why this group who massacred thousands of Somalis is thriving is because of weak and corrupt government that fights itself. A government that relies on foreign forces is eventually doomed so Somali government has to rethink its strategy and learn from what happened to Afghan before it is too late.

Any form of democracy will devolve into tribal factionalism. The only thing that unites Somalis or Afghans is the faith, history is testament to this and its also the reason why these terrorist organisaations like Al-shabaab and Taliban are so damn difficult to defeat, because a large portion of the country supports them.
In somalia when someone squats in your property people go to Al-shabaab, people pay tax to Al-shabaab and many seek justice in the Sharia courts of Al-shabaab which is the only entity in the country that hasnt been corrupted by tribalism. They are literally a state within a failed state. The so called "government' in Somalia is a joke and barely even rules anything outside the capital, the president is protected by foreign troops from other AU countries who no somali wants on their soil. The president of somalia is often called "Mayor of Mogadishu" lol

In western democratic countries like the US, murders and rapists are put back out on the streets or spend their lives in jail cells costing $35,000 a year without having to contribute anything to society.
