The "feet" are also for mating as well, to hold on to the pectoral fins. Not sure if the nose part is for the pectoral fin as well. You sure it's called a tubercle? I think it's a tentaculum, or at least called a tentaculum as well.
I’ve been bottom fishing the Puget sound for over 20 years since I was 5 and never have seen someone so happy to hook a rat fish 🤣 You are a brave man for eating it! Major respect! Thanks for putting WA on the cyber fishing map!
NW Fishing Secrets I’ve once caught something called a Longspine Combfish in the ales Davis Pier in Tacoma last year and a small Pacific Cod at the Alki Pier in Seattle. My dad also caught a small ray once back when you could fish on the bottom platform of the Hood Canal bridge
We caught a ton of these in nets in Norway they call them Havmus! They used to be caught for their liver oil, but we would eat them all the time, the meat is not bad at all! I live in Kingston, gotta take the ferry over sometime 😅
Do you know where the liver oil can be purchased from, do they sell it in Norway anywhere? Any help would be appreciated. A link to the store would be even better. Thanks in advance.
I caught one many years ago at Point Defiance pier and they’re very pretty looking odd fish. I returned it back to the water though. I didn’t know that you could eat those.
I just want to thank you for your videos, man. Watching them inspired me to go out for the first time in over a decade and catch a decent largemouth yesterday after work. As soon as I reeled it in I was instantly filled with joy and excitement. So thank you, Leif and fish on!
I would definitely try that fish! It looks great! The thing I like about your video's is that you cook and eat your catch, that's something that not all fishing programs do. Keep up the good work. I subscribed and hit the bell on two of your videos. The only two I've seen so far.
I did one! Check out my Shark Catch & Cook from last summer! Was delicious, but would like to do another one, trying several ways to soak the meat first......
The ways of a true Pacific Northwestern Inshore fisherman! haha. We got quite a number of tasty fish in our seas that have poisonous spines on them. At least the ratfish only has one! Cabezon have a multitude on each fin! haha.
I've always said when trying new fish species the best way to do it is to cook it simply. As I see you put a large pile of fried onions on top keeping with that theme of simplicity 👌 oh boy
When I saw Chimera, I immediately looked it up, because I knew that I had known it as a Ratfish before, and low and behold, it is haha. I suppose there is some kind of a equal trade off that counter-reacts itself with calling them each by different names, or making it a rule to only refer to them all by a single name. I am split on that haha, I wish having it both ways would solve the confusion issue! That said, I would 100% try that myself. It seems most of the time people automatically think garbage fish always taste bad/bland, but then when you try it for yourself, at least half of those fish are actually delicious as all hell. The raw fillet looked a lot like sole to me, except of course the shape was very different for obvious reason lol. Great video as always man!
You should check out KastKing. They're coming out with this crazy reel next month. Its gonna be 10.5.1 gear ratio. And it holds a pretty good amount of line. Gonna be the fastest baitcaster ever.
Kastking is an awesome brand. Have several of their knives and pliers and love them. They also do this thing where they let their customers try new products for free. I was lucky to be one of them. They came out with a new fillet knife. They paired with a company called Calamus. U buy the knife and leave a review u get a free kastking prize of your choice (scales, knives, pliers). Overall one of the best fishing gear brands
What do people have with animal fish like there is Catfish,Dogfish and now i know ratfish meabe there is more but i just dont know and i love your vids and i love fish (for food and normal alive animal)
I was just watching nat geo, about sharks and this guy came up, and they are prehistoric relatives to the shark. Anyway I thought they were the cutest little fish, so I had to further investigate and came to your channel. How did you know you were going to catch this thing? I've never seen one before
This was the first fish I ever caught with my dad on some herring in the Puget Sound (I was 9). I brought it to my grandmother proposing to eat it she chucked it right back.
NW Fishing Secrets oh yeah! A bit gruesome to the casual audience, but my family and I could keep the stomach open to ensure the guts hang out and shove it in a bait bag or container and the crabs love em!
@@BallinRiceBowl My go to tactic whenever I actually am able to consistently have access to fish and crab would be to keep all the entrails of the fish I eat, alongside the carcass, and freeze it until I go crabbing. Then I have my bait on hand for the crabs immediately after enjoying a quality fishing trip and meal of fresh fish. Full circle, no need to catch anything just to use as bait nor to buy any baits. Same with any animals I'd hunt. Keep what is allowed and not overboard of the entrails, freeze em, then use them as crabbing bait when the times come. Simple, quick and easy, and talk about recycling! haha
Bro, that was one crazy looking fish.... I did not know about them. If I had reeled that up down there I would have probably tripped out hahaha. Another great video!

Nothing to worry about. Oh, if you kiss it, it glows by the way. Just thought you should know. Congrats on the catch by the way!" lol

At 7:00 : what you see aren't his feet, but a "prepelvic tenaculum", it's used to grasp the female when copulating, it has the same use as the weird thing on its forehead!
The oil in butter thing is a myth btw. It's not the butter itself that burns, rather it's the milk solids that separate from the oil. If you want to cook with butter and not have it burn the best way is to slowly render the milk solids out of it and make ghee. I've been doing that for a while now and it's a good way to get the butter favor and make it into a relatively high temperature cooking oil. Also it's really good because as you are rendering it you can infuse herbs into the ghee. My favorite is bay leaves.
Hey life it’s chase again, This is just a suggestion for this coming summer! Last summer I was fishing the green at Flaming geyser park and one of my buddies was using a wiggle wart and was knocking them dead so maybe this summer you can try one sometime I bet you would do great. I suggest you use like a bright red or pink wiggler and try to get a square bill so it dives about 5-8 feet!

I have been trying to find that danish sea salt. But im not finding it. I live here in WA. Help me NWFS!
That's a Male ratfish. The "nose" looking thing is called a tubercle which is meant to grasp onto the pectoral fin of a female ratfish during mating.
Thank you, that makes a lot of sense! Explains the sharp teeth on it.... So females wouldn't have it?
NW Fishing Secrets yeah females I’m pretty sure won’t have it
