Hugh, if you have any contact with Canon - please pass along our enthusiasm for this product to be released soon! I have so many ideas for VR180 videos, and I’ve been waiting for a device like this to come along for years.
Trust me I did. But Canon will not release a camera until it is prefect - not like Chinese company. They don't care about market share. They just want to make the best camera that will last for at least 3 years or more.... Like their R5

something i have been waiting for a long time around this price point. Let's hope that not only 8k30 and 4k120 are possible, but also something around 6k60. For VR180 you will need at least 6K and also 60fps.
@@hughhouyes, maybe there is a reason, but i don't think it's related to technical limitations or sensor. If the sensor does up to 8K and the processors can handle 8k30 and also 4k120 encoding it should not be an issue to handle 6k60 or at least 5k60. For VR180 30fps is too jittery, which is not watchable and 4K is just too blurry. The high standard for VR180 is currently 8k60 and midrange about 6k60 or 7k60. 5k60 is acceptable, but nobody does VR180 in 4k anymore and 120fps does not help here. Nevertheless, i really hope Canon can pull this new camera off and give us a decent midrange VR180 option.

This is exciting. We have been waiting for SO very long for a new 8K 360 camera. Crossing my fingers that it lives up to the Cannon quality and is easy to work with in Adobe Premiere.
@@hughhou Thanks! I care most about picture quality, and ease of getting into Adobe to work on the files, and battery charging from an external battery. It would be nice to have LUT capability that worked, so I could save my highlights. I have ruined WAY too many shots with the RS 1 Inch from trying to use LUTs. As a insta360 user of the beginning I really hope that I can switch to Canons VR line-up. Over the years I had a a lot of issues with the insta360 cams. There is no way Insta360 can compete with the quality of canon cameras.
I'm thinking the challenge for Canon with this camera is going to be the software. They don't have a 360 stitching software as of now. I'll bet they'll charge a subscription fee for it. They have a lot of catching up to do if they want to compete with Insta360, Kandao, and GoPro on stabilization and stitching.
That is really good call. But they do have very robust VR180 workflow now and is better than everyone else. So they just need to focus on 360. And honestly, there are so many free API out there - stitching 360 is really not that hard. Just like initial launch of R5C - it is probably gonna a community driven workflow (meaning I will figure out with some hacks lol) with Premiere plugins and focus on more professional workflow. Canon is good at their color and cinematic look and this can not be replaced by fast R&D. The strength they bring in the industry - let's be serious about the actual image... I still prefer GoPro color than everyone else - prob why. The color is just off on everyone else.
@@hughhou But if it's being marketed as a consumer camera, consumers need 360 stitching and 180 calibration for Windows, Mac, and mobile devices. And it needs to be incredibly simple to use. It'll fail if nobody can work with the footage.

Hi @Hugh Hou! :) Just wanted to ask if there are any news on max. 3D360° resolution, framerate and bitrate on the Quest 3? Hope so much for 8K3D60fps with a bitrate that isnt that bad as the 6K3D60fps 100mb/s of the quest 2 (all scenes in the nature while moving where absolutely useless in the quest 2 without PCVR:( )
This is great news, glad I just sold my insta360 evo for more than I bought it for a few weeks ago. I am hoping that the Iphone 14 pro's spacial video capture will be "open" and work on the Quest 3 but I have doubts because its apple. This canon will be a great alternative and I will definitely pick it up. Hope it doesn't turn into vaporware like some other VR180 cameras though (yi horizon)
I really want to see this camera become reality. I also hope they don't repeat the typical flaws, like non-replaceable batteries, overheating, or what ruins the Insta360 Evo: hidden recording limits where it just stops recording for a while. Consumer level shouldn't mean broken.
Canon's hardware has always been excellent, now what about the software with this new camera? Excellent software is probably more difficult to implement than hardware. Let's see...! 😊
This is Canon weak point - we will see. Prob will be like R5C with Dual Fisheye lens - community hack first (aka from me lol) and then legit software later.
So Hugh, I know u have put out a lot of video reviews on VR cameras, some info seems above my understanding currently; That said, I am really interested in getting started (never owned a 180/360 VR camera) but want to do so with a true 3D VR camera (2-lenses) and unfortunately the insta360 EVO appears to be gone for good. Do u have other true 3D VR cameras using 2-lenses under $2K USD u might recommend or is this new Cannon the one to wait for? My use would be outdoor and indoor, low and bright lighting situations, so looking for something that would excel at all-around general use, not necessarily specializing in a specific operation or situation. Thanks!
Depends on what you want and what better fits your requirements. R5 is prett awesome but you can't put that in your pocket. Want 360? Cannot do that with the r5. Want super high IQ? Pretty sure the r5 will do better than the unreleased cam.
Do you think this will compete at all with the r5c and 5.2mm lens combo? The specs on this sound good but the price difference is enormous. I know one is more than just a dedicated vr camera but still
When the VR180 kit launch plan disappeared from the Insta360 RS product page..😠😠😠 Canon service in South Korea is good. And if it's an 8K VR cam, I'll wait for Canon!!!😊
I'm not sure about it's game changer for consumer market😅 because action & 360 market is taken over by U.S and Chinese companies. I don't see any Japanese company is doing well in this market. For example, image stabilization has never be good for Japanese camera. I don't think canon beats insta360 imagine stabilization algorithm.
Good point. Canon is working actively on image stabilization on all of their new cameras, so we will see. Oh that note, SONY new camera has pretty impressive 2D stabilization - on part with GoPro on a full frame sensor.
I damaged my Insta EVO lenses and there is no hope to fix it. All support is canceled. That's why I've been looking for anything that would fix my needs. Canon sounds promising, size and hopefully the price is competitive with EVO? CALF is also in my mind. Looks like Canon specs can compete with CALF and the price will be lower..... Uhhh I can't WAIT!!!! But spring 2024 I'm gonna shoot 180 with a new cam
@@YGershteyn "What about stabilization? This is important for such cameras, especially for video." Probably some AI can do it very well these days, though at the obvious cost of cropping a healthy chunk all around the frame. For me, a gimbal connected to a monopod is just fine... For me, anything lower than 4k (for 90 degrees fov) requires quickly getting closer to the subject, at least for a brief moment, to grab all the real (facial) details, that some futuristic AI could one day use to enhance the more zoomed out shots of the same subject(s). Same thing with a color chart. A futuristic AI would just need a quick glimpse of that, to make the colors closest to the real colors at the time, rather than just nice colors for the eye...
@@Fatman305 Currently I am shooting VR 180 3D & VR 360 videos using Insta 360 One & EVO cameras. At the same time, using a gimbal for external stabilization or a monopole is not always convenient. @@YGershteynThese things (stabilization etc) I feel should always be done in post production. AIs for these things are moving too fast and requiring too much computational resources. Hmmm... I am disappointed that Canon offers 120fps at 4K which is a resolution too low for modern VR headsets and then jumps to offering 8K at only 30fps. It seems they missed an opportunity to hit a 6K 60fps sweetspot that balances fps and resolution.

6K 60fps require a different sensor making industry - there is no camera can do that without using Full frame level design. The problem is no one maker will focus on just design the best sensor for 360 - but using what they have already on other models and fit inside a 360 camera. But we will see. I would wait for the Canon. Might be a longer wait and more expensive but it can do more then 360 and it being a Canon will make it hold its value better then a qoocam. Support is likely also better.

You do need a very powerful computer like this one (ua-cam.com/video/SM0Mxmhfj7A/v-deo.htmlsi=EZDFGuoadjGh_Z7o) to do faster test to figure out the best settings to aviod stitch line - super annoying but someone need to ask topaz to support us! They aware of the issue as well...
@@hughhou Oh wow :| just bought an rtx4090 since I thought topaz works due to that one test...
Do you think this camera will have same quality like Kandao VR180 Cam?
Prob not. Kandao is MFT sensor and two of them.
It seems like it’s missing the sweet spot. 8k30 is too low frame rate and 4k120 is too blurry. I hope there is a 6k60 option in the middle.
Totally agree. 6K60FPS I don't see any camera can do under $1000 - and not even Canon R6 Mark II can achieve that.
@@hughhou mathematically, if they can push 8k30, they could do 5k67, 5.7k at around 57, and 6k at around 47 ...
lets hope there is some leftover performance left and they could push 5.7k60 or 6k50
Thanks for this. Any word on whether 10 bit colour?
Not yet! But likey they will as Canon is all about color and post production pipeline
Maybe NAB right around the corner is a good opportunity to kick it off...?
Shhhhhh… I am not going so someone please cover for me!!
More competition is great for us consumers. I cant believe Canon is doing more with stereoscopic and almost going against the 360 X brand. Great video, thanks for the information! frank
Totally agree! Canon right now is famous for VR180 - actually the only one is doing it right lol. Now they are getting in 360 as well
Woow! Im just still getting used to insta360, they have good software and stuff, I thought they are the leaders of 360 market. :) I want to become a 360 livestreamer! But now the Cannon goes into the race!
They are still the leader. But it’s good with competition. So push every one to make better products and better customer services :)
@@hughhouYeeeah! I`m waiting Insta360 to release a Killer360cam and software now! 😈
Depends on IPD , hope it’s adjustable
I guess it will be 60mm - same as Dual fisheye lens.
In the video he was talking about the EOS R6II and not the R8, which is 2500USD. Does the R8 also support the VR180 lens, because it is not listed as supported on the Canon page?
Not YET
Hi @Hugh Hou! :) Just wanted to ask if there are any news on max. 3D360° resolution, framerate and bitrate on the Quest 3? Hope so much for 8K3D60fps with a bitrate that isnt that bad as the 6K3D60fps 100mb/s of the quest 2 (all scenes in the nature while moving where absolutely useless in the quest 2 without PCVR:( )
Just saw this! I am traveling so I won’t have my Quest 3 before other influencers 😅
Wow so cool, will watch that as soon as possible 🎉!
Awesome! Thank you!
Canon has got to at least announce a release window for this now that we have a $700 VR180 camera from Calf!
Hope it doesn't turn into vaporware like some other VR180 cameras though (yi horizon)
lol Yi Horizon that’s on Google 😅
iPhone spatial video is at 1080p
Insta360 is soiling its pants right now. I am too, but for the completely opposite reason. 😂 I can’t wait to get this!
Lol!
I really want to see this camera become reality. I also hope they don't repeat the typical flaws, like non-replaceable batteries, overheating, or what ruins the Insta360 Evo: hidden recording limits where it just stops recording for a while. Consumer level shouldn't mean broken.
It is coming! It is 100% reality. Just not sure when yet.
Canon's hardware has always been excellent, now what about the software with this new camera?
Excellent software is probably more difficult to implement than hardware.
Let's see...! 😊
This is Canon weak point - we will see. Prob will be like R5C with Dual Fisheye lens - community hack first (aka from me lol) and then legit software later.
i can't waiiiiiit 😊😊😊😊
Any updates?
Thanks!
Hello, I am preparing VR content. Which is better, the Canon r5c+VR lens or the new Canon camera? I am already using Insta 360 1inch.
Depends on what you want and what better fits your requirements.
R5 is prett awesome but you can't put that in your pocket. Want 360? Cannot do that with the r5. Want super high IQ? Pretty sure the r5 will do better than the unreleased cam.
waiting for a consumer vr180 cam!! hoping it comes out soon and not in years
I hope so too!
Do you think this will compete at all with the r5c and 5.2mm lens combo? The specs on this sound good but the price difference is enormous. I know one is more than just a dedicated vr camera but still
No as it is smaller sensor not professional use
Could this new Canon camera shot Spatial Video like iPhone 15 Pro ?
Well… prob better. Spatial Video is just 3D video Kandao EGO can do. This is fully 180 immersive video. We will see soon :)
All the love for this video - Go Kimchi! More commentary from you please - just be careful up on that desk!
Awww thank you 🙏🏼
When the VR180 kit launch plan disappeared from the Insta360 RS product page..😠😠😠 Canon service in South Korea is good. And if it's an 8K VR cam, I'll wait for Canon!!!😊
Def worth the wait!
@@hughhou I think it will be worth the wait as much as your wonderful video.
I loved it!
Yes!!!
Looks like this might be the one to beat?
Great Video 👍, waiting for a Apple Vision Pro...
Me too! Developer can now play with it
Hi Hugh.... I have one thing to say..... FINALY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yesssssss
8k30 and 4k120 is great but makes me whish there was an in-between 6k60 mode as well
Same here! I am sure someone is making it. Maybe Insta360
Hopefully its decent! I still remember Nikon trying to go into the 360 world and it was horrible. Hopefully this isnt the same
Wait I LOVE KEYMISSION!! It is my first real legit camera and it still hold up in image quality after all these year!
@hughhou oh interesting for some reason I remember a ton of bad reviews back when it finally released. Guess I was wrong! Lol
Any updates on this camera ? Expected release
Date ?
Not yet. Prob after CES
I will keep you updated! CALF is the only one has 50fps in 6K for now. And for VR180 - high frame rate is still pretty important
When will it be available ?
We don’t know yet.
Do you expect Apple releasing a stand alone camera beyond the iPhone?
Probably not. Apple does not make camera. Camera maker make camera for Apple :)
Just learned bout this camera and am super excited to see what it can offer! Fingers crossed, it's affordable!
Как насчёт стабилизации? Для таких камер это важно, особенно для видео.
@@YGershteyn "What about stabilization? This is important for such cameras, especially for video."
Probably some AI can do it very well these days, though at the obvious cost of cropping a healthy chunk all around the frame.
The built-in stabilization in these cameras is good and is sufficient in many cases to obtain a satisfactory image.
I would like to have a similar result in a Canon camera.
@@YGershteynThese things (stabilization etc) I feel should always be done in post production. AIs for these things are moving too fast and requiring too much computational resources. I also have the EVO, and I use the native digital stabilization just for convenience... I feel itchy doing it knowing there are much better tools I should run the raw footage on ;)
looking for a 180vr camera.... hopefully this wont take too long.
I hope so too!
when is going to be released?
When don't know yet.
yes worth to wait 4 it.
Does anyone know when it will be released?
No one know yet :) Hopefully soon.
1:08 OMG that's Athan from Trapped In Static!!!! He uses VR?? That's very cool, his music is amazing! And finally, Canon in the game! 🙌🏻
Yup! Oh wow you know them?! Small world. Yes he do VR livestream on Pico Video for European audience. I wish I have his talent to go live like this
@@hughhou Yeah I've seen them live in NYC a while back, I love their music, hope they come out with more, they deserve more success, truly a great band.
It's a whole new world with VR! As an actor, I'm very intrigued as to how it'll affect the way projects are presented, it's a whole new way to convey feelings and ideas to audiences! Technology moves fast.
Hmmm... I am disappointed that Canon offers 120fps at 4K which is a resolution too low for modern VR headsets and then jumps to offering 8K at only 30fps. It seems they missed an opportunity to hit a 6K 60fps sweetspot that balances fps and resolution.
Agree. Having 6K 60fps require entire sensor re-engineering - that is why literally no 6K 60fps 360 or VR180 camera out there under $1000 range.
Looool… I‘ve ordered my Kandao QooCam EGO just yesterday 😂😂😂
I guess this will serve me well until Canon or Insta360 are ready.
EGO? That is a 3D camera
@@hughhou exactly. It‘s a matter of financial resources and camera quality. I wanted to habe a 3D recording possibility and headed for the Evo first but decided to wait for a newer VR180 consumer camera.
What is the best distribution channel for 180 3D content?
UA-cam
UA-cam and Meta Quest TV so far and UA-cam pay... if it is a good one the ad money is really good.
That's good to know, thanks! I wonder if there is any way to know what type of content performs the best@@hughhou
Thanks for putting this up my radar!
Hope you enjoy it!
this camera will be great, compact, 1 inch great overall package, except its only 30 fps at 8k. Canon's cripple hammer strikes again, but I am tempted to get it anyway, maybe ai interpolation can make it look good in 60fps. I would certainly welcome reducing weight and volume of my current kit.
6K 60fps require a different sensor making industry - there is no camera can do that without using Full frame level design. The problem is no one maker will focus on just design the best sensor for 360 - but using what they have already on other models and fit inside a 360 camera. But we will see. Maybe Canon can be the only one has 60FPS 360 under $1000
@Maebbie , you read my mind. I think Topaz can upres the footage from 30 to 60 (even 90) without problems.
@@hughhou didn't Kandao suggest the Qoocam Ultra was going to have 6K at 60? It's still not out yet, so who knows if they can actually make it happen.
Any updates on this camera? It's been a year!
So cool that Athan Hilaki from Trapped In Static popped up in this video! (1:09) Great front man, great band & this is awesome tech for indie artists 👍🏽 👍🏽
still no 8k 360 camera (with good image quality, unlike qoocam 8k that looks wors than qoocam 3's 5.7k) under $800 available ?
Not YET. But hopefully soon!
Finally 360 180 👏👏👏 canon.
it took 3 years. but this is very interesting. 180vr at HD high frame rate is the non gaming medium HMDs need.
Wait this started 3 years ago?
not canan im sure. but its been clear 180vr has been the untapped medium for all HMD usage since even before that. 2016. easy. 360 was never a real format for narratives or conversational media. Games are just for gamers and the young , while the entire 20th centuries population has been taught to accept the framed Proscenium as reality. @@hughhou
I wander if the thing can shoot C-Log
Probably - just like the power shoot. Canon panel in Japan is all about VR so this will be their heavy hitter when it is out
Bought One R back in 2020 when they say that they're gonna release vr180 mod for it. Fast forward 3 years, still no mod.
Why was the Vuze xr 180 discontinued?
Covid hit a big reset button on many companies and especially individuals running small startups... HumanEyes basically disappeared overnight in April 2020.
There are still Vuze floating around on the internet and still a good camera if you can get you hand on one
dang! cant wait to find out more on the 3d camera!
I wonder what camera of VRBangers, CzechVR used, I guess Alients DIY them then for rent.
Alients? Lol I know they use Z Cam K2 Pro review here. ua-cam.com/video/eoBHAHs0miw/v-deo.htmlsi=Qhf6Yf893zRN6m0C
Or one of these : ua-cam.com/video/WXJJw-KmF_o/v-deo.htmlsi=N9A4xrfiGgSxSwKi
NEED BIGGER IPD,65mm!
Either this or Qoocam 3 Ultra. 1 Inch sensor would be nice
Qoocam 3 Ultra is CONFRIM not a 1-inch sensor - I think it might be smaller than Qoocam 3 but with 8K also
@@hughhou if Ultra is equipped with a smaller sensor, then its night shots are probably going to be unusable... Well I guess I'll just have to wait to see which camera is right for me next year~
Any update to this?
Check my latest CES recap video about Canon
Its a bit of a worry that the plaque says, "Concept" above it. That means, its not anything planned to be released. Its an idea. This would have to exit the idea phase and then get announced as something they actually want to make with a model #. It looks too far away to expect anything. No price, no availability, no model name or #, no clue...
Yesssss!!
Insta360 with a bigger EVO with the 8K sensor and lens from their new action camera will kill other competitors...
Well let's hope it really come out! It has been 4 years now. It is about time
Listening!
I had finally decided to buy a 360 camera the qoocam 3, cos I need decent low light performance and I think for the first time it’s a good balance between cost and performance, personally I don’t think the 360
Video quality is good enough yet on consumer cameras to warrant nearly £800 on the insta 1”.
Then this comes along, also the qoocam ultra will prob be out soon, so now what do I do, do I buy a qoocam 3 or wait a little longer for this or the ultra to come out and any other cameras if planned, don’t mind spending a bit more money for usable / better quality 350 video
I would wait for the Canon. Might be a longer wait and more expensive but it can do more then 360 and it being a Canon will make it hold its value better then a qoocam. Support is likely also better.
Would be nice to get a cryptic reply from someone who had beta tested lol
Yeah, any more info is appreciated. For now i'm going to try doing 3D VR with two DJI action 2 cams.
So "is HERE" from Hugh Hou half a year ago means still not even announced.
It will soon - very soon. I can't say thing b/c I sign my life away for NDA.
@@hughhou Having now seen Canon announce the announcement that they will eventually announce the R1 (yes, three distinct announcements with no useful information), it seems we're years away at best.
Any news?
I can't share yet but hopefully soon :)
Hopefully this camera has fewer issues than the latest Qoocam 3 and they have invested in the software package to make working with the video and images as easy as insta360.
Canon probably going for the more professional workflow - but we will find out more info soon.
That is fine as long as there is an actual workflow!

........IF this ever comes out, IF for a price that makes any sense and IF it performs half as good and reliably as the hyped specs. My gut feeling tells me this ain't flying (at least not in the form and features that most us wish for or image them) and it will never, ever, no way, no chance have 1" sensors. But I keep my optimism up as disappointments are always a given and positive surprises are always a welcome.

We don't know. CALF is more than consumer level so likely not. CALF lens is a lot bigger than this - so more light into the sensor and etc. Also prob still the only one can do 6K 50fps (which easily up-convert into 60fps). This does not do 50 or 60fps.
