I emailed the Corben family recently and asked them the scope of Dark Horse's reprints starting in May. They said they were attempting to reprint ALL of Richard's work thru Dark Horse. Super exciting times to be a Corben fan. Keep 'em coming, Jim & Ed. See the King Kayfabers tomorrow morning!
I always thought that the horror element in Hellboy was more of a conceit to add weird elements but the storytelling itself always felt more along the lines of adventure stories. This is the only one I've read that feels like an actual horror story to me, and Corben's art definitely plays a big part on that.
Can never have too much mignola content
Corben approved and by Mignola alumni, would love to see you discuss the 2015 James Harren run of RUMBLE. Just saw him ink slinging on Felix Comic Art and it was totally inspiring.
Been waiting for this Kayfabe forever... thanks guys! This channel and community has made me appreciate how big the cult of Corben is... when I was a teenager I thought I was the only one who appreciated this guy!
I love when Kayfabe does the Richard Corben segments
I too heard that it's the next Hellboy movie.
Awesome vid, as ever, love me some Corben. I used to correspond with the great man back in the 80s, and asked him then what he used to ink his line work with with, he told me, a rapidograph!!!!!!!
Very interesting! I wonder if he switched to markers and brushpens later. Anyway, it's probably the technique that counts, more than the tool. As always...
I was never a big Corben fan. But your coverage has made me fall in love with this work. Thanks!
Mignola/Corben ❤️ Hellboy In Mexico would make for a great review!Anything with Corben exactly!😎and in the same vein …. Eric Powell’s the Goon meets Hellboy and Powell’s Hillbilly series + Buzzard 3 issue series with a variant Corben cover!❤️💎Keep reading and making comix!🎯
John the Balladeer, colloquially known as "Silver John," though Wellman didn't like the moniker and never used it. John carried a silver-stringed guitar and was a practitioner of folk magic. Most of John's adventures take place in the mountains and valleys of Western North Carolina. The stories and novels are wonderful, but, unfortunately, out of print, and difficult to find. The Wellman story that may or may not have influenced this Hellboy story (and that shares an obvious kinship) is called "The Spring."
That great panel in issue 2 of the witches flying in a big clump is right out of Goya.
Thank you for this video! Now I need to read this story and look into Manly Wade Wellman! Thank you!!
Oh guys ... Your vids on Hellboy are truely amazing ! We want more ! 🤘
for anyone interested in Manly Wade Wellmen, there is a film, The Legend of Hillbilly John (1972) that is based on his Silver John stories, and if anyone is looking for a starting point the collection Who Fears the Devil is a good starting point.
Doing great for comics fellas. Keep reading comics!!!!!!
Can you guys review Corben's 'The Fall of the House of Usher"?
I'm a big Chris Offut fan. The funny thing is that the only thing I've read of his IS My Father the Pornographer.
Also, this maybe my favorite Hellboy comic of all time. I think Mignola just announced a sequel of sorts.
13:20 - reminds me also of both endings for the films The Witch and Beetlejuice 15:27 - Corben's adaptation of House on the Borderlands has those wonderful trees and architecture, too
I love almost all mignola stuff. Like literally everything he does. I always felt like he could do no wrong. But for some reason I can’t stand the look of the crooked man character. Hurts to look at. I know he’s supposed to be weird but lots of Mignola characters are weird and never had that reaction to them aside from this.
Ed… that Aliester Crowley joke was amazing!
Corben is the real real deal.
Tangential but Manly Wade Wellmen had a comics connection -- wrote the Spirit during WWII when Eisner was in the army; also wrote some Blackhawk.
I never used to like Corben's work, but it's growing on me,especially after seeing this today. As for the potential next Hellboy film,I pray they keep the mood dark and stay away from CGI as much as possible. Sometimes you can't avoid CGI,but I think they relied on it way too much and ruined the last movie. The ectoplasm scene was horrible.
looks like the Manly Wade Wellman's JOHN THE BALLADEER stories are getting a reissue by Valancourt Books in the near future.
You guys are the BEST. I would like to see Strnad and Corben's Rip In Time made into a movie if it were directed by either James Cameron Guillermo del Toro or Sam Raimi. Perhaps the only way to do justice to Corbin's art would be to do it animated like Bakshi did with Frazetta on Fire and Ice.
BTW that Croatoan 'mystery' has long been solved and it's quite interesting.
I paused the vid to reread the comic. So good! Corben is amazing. I also loved his H.P. Lovecraft comics.
I think the original TPB of The Crooked Man and Others has a couple pages of Manly Wade Wellman in the back
I was so happy to see this pop up in my notifications. Looking forward to all the new corben books coming out and your videos on them! An old favorite of mine that feels like the most Corben story in recent years that he did not even write himself was 'Starr the slayer'. It's also colored by Villarubia who is in charge of all the restorations for the new Corben library. It's a thing of beauty.
Nice callout for History of Violence. The movie blew it not having that horrifying moment
Even up until the end, Corben never fell off. I've read all his later Dark Horse stuff and it still looks like peak Corben.
Instant Like for this episode and I've only watched 5 mins so far!
OOOH. Every time. Awesome stuff. Every time!
You guys got me all hooked on Corben now.
GIGANTIC CORBEN FAN HERE, SINCE THE DAYS OF CREEPY AND EERIE!!!!
LOVE that Offutt book about his dad!
Ragemoor next?
