This is my favorite Hellboy story. I wish I owned the original page of the hangman. That is one of my favorite pages. This is some of the best of the medium.

One of the things I love most about “The Corpse” is how what initially feels like a one-off story becomes a CRUCIAL element of the plot later on. I think it’s really cool to see something get introduced like that and have it pay big dividends down the road. Not sure if he had that in mind from the get-go but either way it’s a genius-level story idea imo.

Back in the day I had read Seed of Destruction and I liked it, but once these start hitting Advance Comics, I fell in love with Hellboy. It was Amazing. I know I missed a couple chapters back then but I think I might still have a few of these in the serialized form Somewhere. I picked it up when it was initially collected in The Corpse and the Iron Shoes and you know I grabbed a 25 cent copy on the new print as well when they hit.
The Corpse is easily one of my fav HB stories. Just amazing.

Sea Hag is "Jenny Greenteeth".. Ridley Scott did a great version of that character, in his LEGEND film. I'm certain that's why Hollingsworth used the Green colors..

Love this Hellboy story. The Pogues song, Turkish Song of the Damned is very much like a hellboy song narrative. It contains lyric: “You remember when the ship went down, You left me on the deck. The captain's corpse jumped up And threw his arms around my neck, For all these years, I've had him on my back. This debt cannot be paid with all your jack” and I always think of The Corpse when I listen to the song.

Atleast once (or more!) A year I go through the entire Hellboy run, the main stories and the short stories! Been working my way through the other parts of the universe like PBRD, Edward Grey ect ect ect! Love Mignola's stuff!

I remember buying this at my local comic shop when I was probably about 12, still one of my favorite comics of all time. It was cool learning Mignola was heavily inspired by an Irish folktale for this

Not sure if you’re familiar with the Irish ghost story “Teig O’Kane and the Corpse“ by Douglas Hyde, but the premise of this particular Hellboy piece draws heavily from that. At least until the giant were-boar (or whatever that thing is) shows up…

Love that the corpse keeps calling Hellboy "granny" since he's being such a nag. Such incredible, rich storytelling in like 8 pages.
