  • Giorgio Verdiani is a researcher and professor at the Facoltà di Architettura di Firenze. He has obtained a Ph.D. in architectural and landscape survey and representation and is specialized in digital surveys, using laser scanner technologies, photographic survey, image post-processing, and 3D computer graphic. Verdiani has been particularly active in digital surveys since 2001, taking part or managing technical and/or scientific responses to more than one hundred survey campaigns all around Italy and Europe. Since 2011, Verdiani is the director of the “Architecture Informatic Laboratory” (LIA) at the Facoltà di Architettura in Firenze. You. Got. To. Make. It. Interesting. To. Make. People. Listen. To. You.

I agree with Dr. Verdiani on his insights on architecture and technology. I also think, in the future or near future, architects will be using more programming tools than drawing and 3D modeling tools. It’s the AI, the architect programmed, that will do the form-finding and formulation of optimum design solutions. 3D printers will manufacture construction components, then drones and robots will assemble those construction components. These drones and robots will operate on the ground, underground, underwater, in low Earth orbit, and beyond.

Yes, that is why architects should focus on the important things. If architects keep talking me about materials, forms and colour, but end up placing the toilet next to the dining room, l might kindly ask the architect to stay away and let me program the AI myself.

Turing (1950) and the Imitation Game
    The question, "Can machines think?"
"I believe to be too meaningless to deserve discussion.”
“Nevertheless, I believe that at the end of the century, the use of words and general educated opinion will have altered so much that one will be able to speak of machines thinking without expecting to be contradicted.”
    -Alan Turing
