  • The plasma (cytoplasmic) membrane is a thin structure lying inside the cell wall and enclosing the cytoplasm of the cell. It is a phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins that encloses every living cell. The most widely accepted model for membrane structure is the fluid mosaic model of Singer and Nicholson in 1972, which proposes that membranes are lipid bilayers within which proteins are embedded.
