    Hello Matti, my Lumix 20mm 1.7 is my favorite. It sits nice on my G9 or GX85. I love it for my street, and landscape shots. I've even used it for a couple of wedding shots on my "B" camera.

    I like the Pana 20 mm a lot. But it also depends on the camera and the subject/occasion. On my GM1 I would almost always use the 12-32.

      If I had to pick a single favorite, that might be mine too. I like it even more since I got an Olympus body with PDAF; it spends a lot less time hunting for focus than it did on my GX9.

      Funny, but last year I mostly use 20mm 1.7 on GM1 (at home and outside) also using 42,5mm 1.2 on G81 (mostly at home).

    Listening to you talk about camera gear is very therapeutic. I'm interested to check out that 40mm myself as an all purpose lens. I have the Sigma 35mm f2 and 65mm f2 contemporary lenses and I find those to be be a great pair of contrasting focal lengths.

    I can so understand your delight with this focal length. My Fujifilm 27mm mkII (40ish FFEqu.) is my favourite, love the field of view and can happily live with the F2.8.

    Being 68, my favourite is an oldie. The Tamron 17 mm. f: 3.5 with integrated filter turret. That sucker was so rectilinear and sharp my Kodachrome 25 shots were amazing. Contrast was impeccable too.

    Much to my surprise, my favorite is the Olympus 75mm. I used to be all about wide-angle photography, but the 75mm, with its 150mm equivalent angle of view, somehow captivated me. The focus ring isn’t as dampened as I would prefer, but every time I use this lens it remains a joy.

    For me it’s the M.Zuiko 12-100mm f/4. It covers about all of my needs while being relatively lightweight. A perfect fit for my OMD E-M1 mk ii. Bought the lens and body second hand and it was my best purchase in photo equipment.

    Hello Matti, for me, the most important is, compacity, lightweight, weathersealing, so i've often got a prime 40mm/50mm FF equivalent mountvon my camera (loving my old 25mm f1.4 ii lumix, and now i use 35mm f2 fuji, i found that the lumix would have better rendering than the fuji). I'm looking to the 27mm ii to be more compact. I love compacity to always take my camera with me🙂

    Favorite lens. My favorite lens of all time does not match the cameras I own now. So with the limits that it is a personal use lens for photos I want to print which is totally different than my walk around lens to capture memories or the lens I use for paid jobs. The lens I would want to use for prints is the Olympus 17/1.2. It has two different characters. One at 1.2 and 1 at 5.6. I have the choice of looks. And although not mentioned, there is an emotional connection. When I open a file to edit it, the files from this lens stand out. I do not have to check which lens I used as I do some of my other photos. The RAWs (I use flat RAW without a profile) it such a joy to edit and look at. There is more to work with and more I can do with the file than any other lens I have used on a 30 or 24mp camera. I spend more time processing my best or favorite photos than I do taking them usually unless you count wait time for the right image which can be days. The 17/1.2 makes that time more enjoyable to me. However, I have been selling prints since 1964. And that has a large effect on my favorite lens today. Many photos I can think back of when I did something similar or maybe better in my past of they look similar to ones I have seen. And I like the 17/1.2 as it is different. Not as good as my favorite F2 lenses of all time. But since to be my favorite it has to be on a camera I own not rent, that is my choice. Although for very different reasons than yours. Which is totally valid as there is no one universalbest lens. There is a best for each individual lens that only the person using it can know..

    • @RyougiVector
      @RyougiVector 2 роки тому +1

      Yeah I find that the 17mm f/1.2 has an optimal OOF rendering that strikes a balance between informative and blurry, for me. Not too much, not too little. So what's there that's OOF looks quite smooth without being distracting. And what's in focus can either have a soft look when used at f/1.2, or be pin sharp at f/2.8 to f/4.

    • @DeMorcan
      @DeMorcan 2 роки тому +1

      @@RyougiVector I like the way it handles OOF. It is not a subject against a backdrop. For some photos printed large it gives that look as though you could walk into the photo and you can tell how far everything in the photo is. The only other lenses I have seen this look from are the Nikon 12/2 and the Leica Summicron APOs (mostly the 35 but the 50 did also). I am not comparing the lenses at all. Just the look that makes the viewer part of the photo instead of looking at it.

    I can't afford very expensive lenses. So these are some cheaper alternatives.
    I shoot often macro images and my favorite lens is therefore my m.zuiko 30mm f3.5 macro. It's very light and sharp and nice all around lens too.
    Another lens that I like (strangely) A LOT is my Samyang 300mm f6.3 Reflex (MFT) (600mm equivalent!) It's small and light and the shortest focus distance is only 0.9m. It can produce really exciting looking pictures. Manual focusing is challenging but once you get it right it gives you great pleasure! Due to camera's IBIS one can manage quite well without tripod. Those who say it's not sharp at all didn't nail the focus. It's sharp enough. (Off course you don't take quick snapshots with such a lens.)
    These two lenses I take often with me when I go out with my E-PL8.

    40 is just not wide enough for an all around lens. I’d accept 35, but ideal is 30. I’m a M43 shooter so that means 15mm. The Lumix Leica 15mm (30mm in full frame) is my favorite lens. Not too wide, but OK for a landscape. Still nice for portraits. It’s the lens I keep on my m43 body for walking around.

    I had the same dilemma with MFT. I had the brilliant Leica 25mm but was not using it, favouring the Lumix 20mm instead. There is a subtle but noticeable difference in going over the image circle diameter as to going under it. The Leica got traded.

    40mm might be my favorite focal length. During High School i shot almost all my photo's with a Rollie 35 with the 40mm f3.5 Tessar, loved the result. The lens I grab first now (I guess that makes it a favorite) is the 17mm f1.8 m.Zuiko (34mm equiv.) maybe not the best in that focal length but I like the look I get from it.

    Thank you for promoting the SONY 40 mm f2.5. With a SONY APS-C it means 60 mm focal length (Am I right?). With full format it means 40 mm, a focal length of the normal class tending to a mild wide angle. My favorite lens with Lumix 4/3 cameras is the Olympus M. Zuiko 17 mm f1.8. Its focal length is equivalent to 34 mm ff. and satisfies my belongings in street-, landscape-, family photography. My LEICA DG VARIO-ELMARIT 12-60 mm with power O.I.S. never will be my beloved favorite lens. LAOWA 7.5 mm f2.0 and PERGEAR 12 mm 2.0, both manuals, the same, but the 7,5 mm all the time in the bag.

    I also have this lens and I love it! 40mm is my favourite focal length for travel and street photography. I am just gearing up to buying a Ricoh GRiii X as I find a whole day with my A73, and the 40mm, in hand does cramp my hand up a bit. That is mainly due to my shooting style though, as I like to keep my camera in hand rather than on a strap. The Ricoh should help with this.

    When I had the Olympus m43 camera my favorite was the 17 mm f1.8 as it is a great travel lens. Now with Sony I have that 50 mm and it is great, too. Already had a 24 and the 35 from Samy as these are light and small lenses to carry when traveling. It is great that now there are these lighter and smaller options as that is one advantage in a mirrorless system.

    The Sony 50mm 2.5 variety of this lens has been glued on my A7C for quite some time. Before the Sony G series came out I purchased 5 of the Sigma ‘I’ series lenses, though I now wish that Sony had this series available to me at that time, they just seem made for the A7C. Now those Sigmas are nice lenses, but my everyday walk around is the 50mm Sony with a Sigma 24mm and a Ricoh GR iiix in my pocket. Well, I might add my Sigma 90mm F2 ‘I’ series in the bag once in a while for extra tight documentary shots. Will you review the new Sony 16-35mm F4 PZ? It’s high on my list as the 35mm end is where I’d keep it mostly for travel. Thanks

    Out of those I use more or less every day that would be Fuji XF 35/1.4 R. Light, sharp, relatively small, has great character. Yes, the autofocus is slow-ish and misses sometimes, but I can live with that.

    Sadly I have not had the opportunity to use an M.Zuiko Pro lens but I really want the OM System 20mm Pro lens. Currently I am torn between the M.Zuiko 45mm and 25mm f1.8s and if I HAD to choose it would be the 45mm. I enjoy the tighter field of view for my composition. Pro lenses are my current goals. Not sure yet if it is my favorite prime lens yet cause couldn't try it for street photography yet which I think is where it shines. I started film photography with only a 50mm and didn't love it cause felt it's always too tight. What's my favorite lens? That's like asking me which child is my favorite. Answer: it depends on the day. If I had to choose just one (or if I only had one lens), it would be the Panasonic 20mm. A close second would be a do-it-all zoom, such as the Oly 14-150. I usually carry both: a do-it-all and a fast prime; one on the camera, the other in a pocket with an additional battery. That's my standard walk-around kit. No camera bag. Works for me.

    Hi Matti, I think the reason why the Sigma didn't appeal, might have been do to with the camera body it was attached to. If Lumix made a FF body like the Sony A7C, with it's classic styling, it might have been a winner! Maybe it's a bit about the concept, like in any other relationship. I had to sell all my mft gear yesterday... thankfully to good home. I still have the Lumix S5 and a few lenses, but I don't LOVE the set-up. It's a workhorse. Why am I googling Fuji XS10 and manual silver 7artisan lenses even though I cant afford anything at the moment? What an attractive little camera system that would be...(to me anyway).

    The Minolta 50 mm f1.7…it was the very first lens I bought for my first camera, the Sony Alpha 58. At that time I didn’t know a lot about photography, so, instead of focusing on the gear aspect (sensor size, crop factor, ecc) , I just focused on using it. As of today, there are photos I took whit that lens that I can’t replicate whit modern equipment…I usually tell my friends that, that lens taught me how to take photographs. I have yet to find something that gives me back the same pleasure of use.

  • @jeffslade1892
    @jeffslade1892 2 роки тому +1

    My choice of favourite lens is much the same as yours - compact, light and convenient. Not the best lens ever, nor the fastest.
    Anything longer than the image circle diameter is a telephoto (actual definition is a lens physically shorter that its focal length, but hey, most are like that). The image circle diameter of 135 film (FF) is 43.3mm, hence 50mm is a bit tighter FoV, and the popularity of 42-45mm lenses as "standard" going back to film, especially compact cameras.
    I shoot MFT and have two lenses that fit this criteria, so much so that I have acquired duplicates of both over the years. Not quite sure why now but they're kinda his n' hers.
    I do favour zooms - so that is the pancake PZ14-42 which is a does-everything wide-tele, and the fast 20mm f/1.7 pancake.

  • @danncorbit3623

    My favorite lens depends on what I am doing. If I am photographing squirrels, birds, or other small animals, I like my Sigma telephoto. If I am photographing flowers or insects, then my favorite is my Canon 100mm. If I am photographing humans it's a tough call between my Canon 85mm and my Nikon 180mm. If I.am taking pictures on Mount Rainier, then a wide angle like my Canon 17-40. Suppose I am just walking around and shooting at Dash Point state park... Then my Nikon 80-200mm D lens is a real favorite. I guess my bottom line answer is even stranger still. I have maybe 70 lenses. And for some combination of task and camera, each of them is a favorite, which is why I have not sold them or given them away. So maybe my answer is none is my favorite or maybe my answer is that all are my favorites. And I would like to mention that my tiny, cheap Canon 50mm STM is sharp as a razor. What do I want in a favorite lens? Fast is almost always good, at least f4 (but I can live with f5.6 for a telephoto of it's long enough). Light weight is nice if I am hiking, but if I plan to use a tripod and I don't have miles to carry it, then heavy is fine. Sometimes, I want a special look. Maybe a super wide lens. Or maybe a 300mm prime for the ultimate in separation and clarity. Since this is a viewpoint question, there are no wrong answers, and I expect everyone to like different things than I do based on preference and use case.

    If a 40 mm lens similar to yours was available for the Canon RF mount, I think it would be my favorite. Instead, I’m mostly using a 35 mm, but it is a little too wide, and so it is “nice,” but not a “favorite.” I agree: 50 mm is just a little too narrow. So, 40 mm is the “Goldilocks” focal length.

    I just bought the OM 20 mm 1.4 (so 40mm in ff terms) and wait for it:) Thought, 25mm (50) was a bit too narrow, 17mm (34) a bit too wide for travel, street, portraits including the scene or portraits of small groups of 2 or 3 people, so a „many purpose“ lens for travel and everyday - at least I hope so :)

    40mm are a great focal length (though I prefer 35mm !), there are a reason that most old analog compact cameras had 38mm or 40mm Lenses, my Leica Minilux has a 40mm Lens which have the best ever optical quality performance of all analog compact cameras. I want Lenses to be solid built, compact, handy, easy to use, aperture ring (AF/MF button if it is a autofocus Lens) and with the highest possible optical quality performance as possible, I do not care about how how it looks that much, but of course it will be nice if it als looks good. I use Sony A7RIV and I expect only to use the best possible Lenses, so I do not want the compact Sony G Line which often depends too much on software for corrections. At the present time my most used Lens are the Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0 Aspherical, a great Lens !
