Wanted to make this video to show the proper way to change the oil in a dry sump engine. It is a little different than your normal oil change. Do this at your own risk. I like to do my oil changes myself as the dealer sometimes doesn't. I also am picky who is in my car. If you have any questions hit the comments section below or email me. This oil change process will work on the Z06 ZR1 and Grand Sport Chevrolet Chevy Corvettes with Dry Sump.

Keep in mind for some of the new LS7 Z06 owners that, like me, own a 06-08 Z06 only need 8 Quarts of oil if you have the T56 trans. Later model 2008.5 - 2013 Z06’s take 10.5 quarts of oil. I almost blew my engine due to thinking that my car took 10.5 quarts of oil when only needing 8. Great video though and another thing I recommend for every other oil change is to pull out the two dry sump lines that connect to the oil pan on the passenger side under the car. They dump usually about half a quart of old oil that is always settled in there. Also, DO NOT LOSE THE METAL GASKETS THAT HANG ON THE END OF THOSE TWO LINES WHEN PULLING THEM OFF. They can be reused without issues. Just thought I’d add that for those who really wanna clean out dirty oil from your system.
Thank you. Great advice 👍
Great information for those of us with dry sump oil systems. Keep the good info flowing my friend!
Thank you
Great info, no B.S. just the facts. I like it. Great looking ride.
Thank you
Such a clean ZR1 man. Gorgeous. Very informative info. Thank you 🤙🏻🏁
Thank you. Should have kept it
Ah bummer. I hope you replaced it with something just as bad ass
Maybe I will at some point
Another good video. Keep up the good work.
Thank you
Getting ready to change on my '09 JSB ZR1......using Amsoil products. Just for information's sake lubing the filter gasket is not just to soften the gasket, or some other old wive's tale reason, it is to create a barrier to keep the rubber gasket from melting and adhering to the engine block. If you are the lucky recipient of a tech that neglected to do this, you will curse that previous change tech for not doing it.
Lol. I can see that
Good info. I need to do mine for the first time since I’ve had it. How do you reset the oil reminder?
In the driver information center
Thanks for showing the oil change. Jetstream Blue was always the best. What sort of polish/ wax do you use? Nice gloss!
I used Pinnacle
Do you know if it would be the same procedure to change the oil in a 2015 Z28?
It does.
Hey bud just bought a z06 that has a wix xp filter should I switch to oem . I see that your car was running that filter . You had a change of mind or any other specific reason ? Thanks in advance.
Either are good. Wix is a great brand and one of the ones I use👍
Excellent Thanks!
Hopefully it helps
@@TWAMotorsports Just purchased a ZR1 and will be doing a oil change soon it absolutely helps
Going to be doing my first oil change on my 06 Z06 which takes approx 8 qts. As far as oil temps though i've never seen it hover around 175 once warm usually its around 130-160 but my coolant stays around 175. Should I be concerned?
Yeah dont worry about getting to 175. 150 should be good. I think it would take more than 8 quarts though.
yes true I own a 07 z06 since brand new. just takes 8 qts of oil.
@@TWAMotorsportssubscribed. still have the zr1?
No it sold
Using 5w-30 with that cam do you hear a lot of valve train noise running that light a oil??? Or does it burn oil a bit??
I hear a little valve train noise but not terrible. No burning though.
Ok just wondering cause from my experience having a ls engine once modded I have to usually go thicker oil (10w-30 @ least)specially to help with heat, valve train noise, main bearings etc
@@casino8857 I can see that.
You forgot to tell how to reset the oil reminder light.
Dang it.
Kind of off topic but have you ever heard of the window sweeps on the Trans am doors not clipping back into the door? Mine has that problem and I bought a new sweep but it still never stayed in place. I'm not sure if you would have to replace the whole door or somehow can fix the "clip holders" inside the door I guess if that's what you want to call them? Figured I'd ask lol and maybe you could do a video on it. but anyways love the content!
Thank you. The fiberglass may be worn where the clip on. Only thing I can think of. Never had that issue myself but have seen it happen.
@@TWAMotorsports Yes that's exactly what I'm talking about. Is that piece inside the door replaceable you think? Or would you need an entirely new door?
@@KoleSlaww you might be able to fix it but I'm for sure no body man lol.
@@TWAMotorsports gotcha thanks!
@@KoleSlaww I wish I could help more but that is not my expertise
Was the car at operating temp? Hotter oil will drain easier and more will come out compared to non operating temps
It was warm when I drained which I generally try to do.
Did you add the oil catch can? Or does the Z06 & ZR-1 come with that.
I added the catch can
19” rear or factory 20”? Saw what looked like a drag radial
19 replicas with nitto nt05r
Is there a reason why there are two drain bolts : But , one of them has a blue line on the bolt and the other does not ? Aren't they the same ? Thank you !
Two parts of the pan. Blue line just mean it was checked as torqued at some point
While the front plug is out lift up on the sump hoses, quite a bit of old oil comes out
Great advice
Hey man what did you use to wrap the oil feed and return lines going to and from the sump tank ? Thanks!
Dei hook and loop heat wrap
@@TWAMotorsports I like the little deets like that. My car is a stock c6z but I think it could benefit from this seeing as the manifolds are right there.
Did you have an issue getting the stock hanger to hold the line ? I’m guessing you had to remove it yea ?
@@TWAMotorsports sorry do you know which size you used ?
I don't remember honestly
love that color blue is it jetstream blue
Thank you. Yes jetstream blue. I miss it daily
Garage gray paint? Interior or Exterior ? Flat of Semigloss?
I don't remember the color but its valspar interior satin
I’m going to remove cats. What oil should I use now, oil weight and model filter? 655rwhp ecs 1500 blower
Honestly I really like this ls30 oil. As for the filter k&n is nice as well as wix.
Stick with driven oil, I’ve been using it for awhile best oil going! No API or SAE starburst on the bottle which means it’s not the same as all other brands
I like it so far.
I just upgraded to the shorty dip stick, best mod ever
I have never seen that.
TWA Motorsports it’s a funny car reviewer and that’s one of his lines he always uses haha.
@@RiseAboveFilmsLLC lol. I gotcha. Short dip stick mod.
Nice vid but you don't need to wait until the oil gets to 175 degrees, just start it for a minute or so and let the oil circulate then check the level like you said 5-20 minutes after.
Thank you. I was following gm procedures but that would take less time for sure.
Correction, its5-10 min. wait no more than 10..Also, its 190 degrees ..Great video..CORVETTE GUY(2012 GS) TAKE CARE ROD
@@rodneyharper7265 Obviously you don't own one of these cars, do you know how long it takes for the oil to reach 190 degrees? It has to be a 90 degree day and you'd have to be beating on it for a while for it to get to 190. The oil coolers work too well.
Hey its RODNEY ,nice vettes..I own a 2012 GRANDSPORT w/8k miles..Mods are small,CORSA C.A.I. & CORSA axle back exaust (kooks headers & a dyno coming soon)however,to verify our dispute.I drove yesterday @ 57 degrees &sunshine @ 40/50 mph (easy because I just removed from storage) it took 8 minutes to reach 190 degrees..Take care Rodney..Awesome video on the oil change...YOUR VETTES ROCK
@@rodneyharper7265 thank you Rodney. You Vette sounds pretty Nice. 👍
How often do you change your oil ?
Every 3k
Do you take a day off?????
Not really
What lift is that?
Bendpak
The car actually takes 11.75 quarts. If you disconnect both oil lines another 1.5~ comes out. It takes nearly the entire 12 qt box of Mobil 1 to fill my ZR1 up again. And it's still below the full line!
👍
Look into Schaeffer oil. Best lubricants and fuel additives in the world and Americas oldest oil company since 1839 🏁
I will do that. Thanks for the heads up.
I'm here first
Sup dawg
@@TWAMotorsports Yes Sir I'm pretty fast lol and good video love it
@@juniorcarter2066 thank you
I could have never sold that zr1
Sometimes I make a mistake lol
Oil pan "plugs"
Amsoil signature is really good oil, but Driven brand provides really horrible protection levels for the ls9 engine or any high performance motor for that matter. On the magnitude of 73k psi at operating temperature vs 130k+ for amsoil... I'd never use Driven even in a Camry to be honest. Might want to do some research before recommending that stuff!
Interesting. Thank you for the information
10.5 quarts??? My manual calls for 8.
Yep but didn't take that much.
TWA Motorsports i wonder if the ls9 takes more. I just double checked my manual for my Ls7, and it says 7 quarts, start then add another quart.
It must but the process is the same
@@camwilkowski4354 depends on which year Z06 mine is a 2008 and it's 8 qrts. Just go by the manual.
2009 and up went to a bigger oil tank, thus more capacity
That's not loud, I've got open cutouts on my 630rwhp n/a C6Z06...😬
You are definitely better than me
@@TWAMotorsports Lol, BTR 4 too, but it sounds like a really mad dump truck in a way too.... Lol, nothing to "smooth" the sound .....
I'm not a off the shelf btr cam type guy
@@TWAMotorsports It worked pretty good, but I get it.
Yeahseveral people use them
