It is real simple, all the pressure is going to escape through the weakest point, which is always going to be your finger. Even if the gun banana peels, you are not going to have a hand left.

That's why I've always recommended epoxy. Slow cure being the best.
Now, arranging that, that's up to the one getting in front of the gun.
A nice tungsten ice pick would do, you'd not get blasted, just an ice pick propelled up the inside of your hand and forearm.
Hardened steel lag bolt, perhaps? I'm sure they'll patiently wait.
Seriously though, what was historically effective was spiking the barrels of the weapons. Not a facing down a muzzle activity, but it did effectively kill the weapon throughout history. Of course, fingers ain't spikes.

My Dad and his friends experimented with this using a chicken leg in place of a finger. He said the hardest part was figuring out how to fire the gun from 10 feet back; he daid he was surprised at how completely destroyed the chicken leg was. He expected a hole, but the chicken leg exploded.

I always thought this trope was ridiculous, because wouldn't the bullet just go through the finger? But, I never once thought that fingers are too big to be stuck in a gun barrel at all in the first place! Maybe because I've never touched a real gun before, so I've never tested that hypothesis, either way.

even if it didnt, the reason the gun blows up is because it cannot withstand the pressure. if you compare the pressure that your finger can withstand vs a metal pipe, youd realise pretty quickly that you would probably prefer getting shot transversely to having your hand rupture from the pressure and then have the bullet pass right through the exploding part of your hand anyway and possibly all the way up your arm.

When I did my military service in the Finnish Defence Forces, we were taught that the most men in peacetime were shot with an empty gun. Excellent advice. In Finland, almost all men do their military service and for this reason almost everyone has experience in safe gun handling. There is also no gun fetishism in Finland like in the USA, perhaps partly because in the army, guns are just tools.

Years ago, my father sat on a jury hearing a lawsuit brought to court by a farmer who lost his thumb when a shotgun exploded. The farmer had accidentally mixed some 20 gauge shells into his 12 gauge shells. The 20 gauge went down into the barrel, blocking the barrel. A 12 gauge shell was then loaded behind it, causing the barrel to have a piece blown out of the barrel where the farmers' left hand was holding the shotgun when it was fired.
The jury found the defendants not liable due to the negligence of the farmer not keeping his shotgun shells properly separated.

Regarding muzzleloaders: There are instances during the Civil War(and prior wars?) of soldiers loading muskets... and either forgetting to fire or not noticing the weapon hadn't fired. They would then load another round... forget to fire... then another.
Not sure what would happen if they managed to fire a rifle with more than one load... but I wouldn't want to find out.
Also, muzzle loading cannons were often double or triple charged... which could lead to a burst barrel.

A better example of a tank barrel blowing up is the German Tiger. The 88mm barrel was too big and powerful for a tank without some serious engineering. The result was a gun without equal at the time, but it came with a heavy burden: it had to be maintained with meticulous care. A dirty barrel could cause a backfire and blow the turret off. Due to their engineering, there was very little room for dirt in a Tiger 88, compared to other tanks not often responsible for blowing themselves up. I'm looking through my books and can't find exact details on how dirty was "dirty," but the crews were told if they were in doubt, don't fire because there was no room for error.

In an instance of sabotaging insurectionists during the various decolonisation wars, fake weapon smugglers would deliver and sell rifles that had been welded halfway through the barrel.
As suchh, when fired, the gas would only find exit by bursting through the mechanism, effectively shooting the bolt at the user's face...

Later he shot at a duck and the barrel blew up. He brought the barrel remnant to church and passed it around a bunch of the guys. I think i even held and inspected it. Granted, its a shotgun, and not a single bullet, so that may have made the difference

  • @j4s0n39

The biggest threat is a squib round. I've been at a shooting range twice when a semi-auto pistol exploded due to squibs. The barrel didn't explode, the gas escaped at the breach, damaging the slide around the ejection port and the top of the frame. Most pistols calibers have much higher pressures than shotguns, so the barrels are thicker and stronger.
I had my own squib once, by not putting the powder load in a hand loaded round. Fortunately, the primer barely put the bullet into the rifling and 220gr 300BLK bullets are very long, so the next round could not chamber, and I didn't fire a second round, until I cleared the squib.

My local military museum has a large caliber WW2 anti-aircraft gun with a banana peeled barrel. The story was the crew had to abandon it during a retreat. Rather than let it fall into enemy hands they stuffed an entire HE shell back-to-front in the end of the barrel, loaded another HE shell into the breach, stood back and pulled the lanyard. Later when they retook the position they retrieved the gun which had been left untouched by the enemy.

It's a little bit more complex than that. What the mode of failure ends up being depends on many factors such as how much powder is in the cartridge, what the normal operating pressures are, the design of the firearm itself especially affecting the strength of the action and barrel, and how far down the barrel the obstruction in the barrel is. If the blockage is close enough to the chamber end where the barrel is generally thicker, it can result in a far more catastrophic failure event where either the barrel splits from the chamber end or the locking mechanism itself that was supposed to support the back end of the cartridge fails. They are usually far more violent and hazardous to the shooter because usually they happen to even higher pressures.

I will say that it depends but if you are talking about practical plugs that are used in real tank cannons to stop dust and other stuff from getting into the barrel they can be shot through though it might destabilise the shot but I think it works even with high explosive shells. It was stated in the manual for the STUG III during ww II that they preferred to remember to take them out not because it ruined the barrel but because they were very important to maintain a good gun and they only had a few with them at any one time

Not surprising this could happen to tanks. Not just from crappy terrain/mud, but also shots hitting and compromising the turret or barrel sufficiently. A hit making the barrel even slightly too narrow (like the example with the sherman in the video) would be expected now and then. Wouldn't surprise me if issues with manufacture caused some % of them too, or too much expansion with overheating causing the barrel to warp a bit (either due to manufacturing issues with the steel or maybe improper use).

Then, you assume there is a round in the chamber until you clear it once again. Its literally the first thing I do every time I pick up a weapon. Of course with mine, outside of mantinance, I'm just making sure there is a round in the chamber. A safety, if applicable, is signifigantly faster than manually cycling the action.

There is an anime called City Hunter. In one of the first episodes, the main character puts his hand up to his own 44 Magnum and fires. He didn't do it to stop the gun from firing... but to slow it down enough that it wouldn't penetrate the windows beyond the target. His shot disarms the bank robber holding a hostage without penetrating the windows to hit bystanders outside.
He walks out of the bank calmly, impressing a nearby reporter with his composure.
Once outside... he screams in agony.
    But would that actually work?

I never would have thought that the barrel will turn into a banana shape. I knew the gun would explode if it had blockage, but I didn't know it. Actually, you can split like a banana, that's pretty cool.
And also I don't know why people think
That you could have put your fingers in The barrel to block it, even if that was impossible, you would need to have a hand that is stronger than iron. Well, I mean, I guess it doesn't need to be strong and iron. It just need to be metallic to block in well, I guess I did loot in something new, though. I didn't know that cartoon effect with guns were real. Just not the finger part

Also, I have english as a second language myself, so I wouldn't know if the mode of speech is an accent, but to me it and the gentle humor floating through the entire presentation, is reminiscent of one of the Monthy Python sketches that has John Cleese sit and very, very thoroughly explaining somthing eaqually very, very obvious in this exact same mode of speech.

The barrel of a shotgun can really explode. About 20 years ago, my uncle was hunting foxes in the winter and shot a fox. The hit was not good and the fox was only knocked out for a moment and when my uncle approached the fox, the fox would start running again. My uncle fired the second barrel empty, or that was the intention, because the barrel exploded. My uncle thought the barrel of the shotgun hit the snow and since the barrel must have been a little warm after the first shot, the snow melted. My uncle was not injured, except for his ego maybe getting a little hit. I feel sorry for the poor fox the most, who probably got shot in the ass. Life is tough in the dense Finnish forest anyway.

In the days before widespread LE use of soft body armor, when point shooting a DA revolver with a one-handed grip was still common, some agencies taught officers to place the free hand/arm, across the chest. One reason for this was in hopes of possibly slowing down incoming rounds. (Paraphrased from Scott Reitz, LAPD Metro div. Firearms instructor)
