Roshan Ara Begum (1917 -1982) became one of the most important woman in the history of Hindustani classical music. In Pakistan she is revered as Mallika-e-Mauseeqi or Queen of Music.
Roshan Ara Begum was one of the most outstanding disciple of the legendary Abdul Karim Khan of the Kirana Gharana. After singing a few ghazals and geets for the films she devoted her entire life to Northern Indian classical music even when it was not that popular in Pakistan. She too shifted & migrated to Pakistan at the height of her career knowing that the conditions were not that conducive for her.

We are forgetting such giants of our classical music. Is there anyone today who can sing Raag Darbari like the perfectionist Roshan Ara?
What a grandeur, accuracy and subtlety in her singing! World is waiting for someone like her to be born again.
Wajih Bukhari Sb , I can understand ur feelings. Values are changing rapidly, we are just mimicking blindly the foreign traditions. Patronage of Sub-continent Classical Music has almost vanished, so who will come ahead to please our airs with these great heritage?

even in golden age of classical music, she was one of the greatest, we are lucky at least we have good recording of her singing, except Abdul Karim Khan saheb himself, i can't find anyone better in kirana than her, we are blessed, thx Syed saheb for uploading
How can they come? Are we respectful of their Divine Music? Perhaps we are not deserving enough.

We are lucky enough to listen her. Listen her Raga Shankara and many many others. But don't be judgemental. Listen this rage from Ustad Faiyaz Khan, Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Amir Khan, her own guru and many others. Forget about the best and listen as much as you can take. Those days are long gone and all recordings of those gods and goddesses need to preserved.

I know this may sound strange, but I am an American fan of Roshan Ara Begum. I have always loved her taans and how she can set the mood. I thank you Syed for uploading such a rare recording of her: full length and with a drut section. It is sad that not too many people know of Roshan Ara Begum anymore, or talk about her. She is comparable to Salamat Ali Khan, Bhimsen Joshi, and Jasraj in talent and skill.
You appear to know a lot about Hindustani classical music.
Very correct Nicholas. Unfortunately Roshan Ara Begum is relatively unheard ( her music i mean) today & not as much as the other names you have taken. But as the master shagird of her great Guru, Ustad Abdul Karim Khan Saheb, she's absolutely equal to the likes of "Gangubai Hangal, Pt Bhimsen, Ustad Salamat Khan, Pt Jasraj.
What a lovely rendition. Matchless. Undoubtedly she is queen of classical singing.

@@abdulwasy6607 Goes without saying ! The greats like Ustad Amir Khan saheb, Bade Gulam Ali Khan Saheb are all priceless gems in the sparkling necklace of what's called Indian Classical Music. I was particularly mentioning singers of The famed Kirana Gharana where Roshanara Begum belonged.

Begum ji has adopted styles of other gharanas also,especially the taans are exactly similar to Patiala gharana.But the bol tan is typical Kirana style.

An unusual darbari with the sam neither on the komal dhaibat or the gandhar, but on the suddh rekhab. The rendering lacks the late night slow grandeur that we associate with the raga darbari.

the amazing thing is that the raga remains in its true form in drut too. she really enjoys great control.
