I like this merciful representation of the pharisee: he is not a contemptible and proud hypocrite, he is just confused about all those new teachings, as we all can be. That is compassion: to understand what caused someone to fail, instead of just despising them for that. Well done, BP, as always!
@@MsMoves Yes, there were a lot of hypocrites among them, and there were also Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. This shows that being a scribe was not automatically a bad thing. As many things in life, we all begin with a good intention (know the will of God), and then some of us slide into error, sometimes unconciously, and become proud, hypocrite, all those things. But not all Pharisees were Caiaphas, just as not all Christians are like the medieval inquisitors.
@@MsMoves Read the story in Acts 15:1-5 it mentions believers that were also pharisees. That's on top of the two pharisees mentioned above. You have to understand that before Christ, the most you could do to get close to God was become a Pharisee. Many of them would have been eager for righteousness, but the power that came with it often corrupted their hearts.
Well not all Pharisees were bad. Most were corrupted. But Nicodemus was a Pharisee and he believed Jesus. Saul was a Pharisee who hated Jesus but BC he thought Jesus was a false prophet. Once he saw Jesus and his truth, he became Paul, commited wholly to Jesus
Currently battling depression and it's been hard to dive into things that have to do with God as I used to, but I had set a reminder for this premiere. When I saw it on my email I didn't even think twice! Your videos are totally helpful and I'm a huge fan of animations so that helped take it in. The content is also so easy to grasp yet enlightening. I think what you guys do is phenomenal. Thank you! ❤
Ok… so, as someone who has been where you are, I can honestly tell you your first step to walk away from the oppression of depression as a child of God: Do NOT identify as ‘someone battling depression’. Through away the tendency to describe yourself as ANYTHING to do with depression. Take to yourself only your awareness of who you are in our wonderful Saviour. Call yourself The Redeemed, The Sanctified, The Beloved, The Daughter of God! The Blood-bought Inheritor of the Kingdom of the Skies… 😁 Therein lies the truth!
In addition to spiritual exercise (praying and Bible reading) join a gym and start lifting weights. Do a full body workout routine. Start small and work your way up in weight size and intensity. It will be immensely helpful to you.
I think it's great that BP is presenting the scholar (who would likely be a Pharisee) as thoughtfully considering Jesus' ideas. Not a hypocrite who we should hate.
I agree! And really, it's no different than if we were to consider how each of us has a tendency as humans to get stuck in our own way of believing how we should do things, and then we become prideful, And assertive of only that one definition! And it sounds like that is the same thing that happened between the Pharisees and the sauges and different schools of thought. It's no different than schools of thought today, and how we should practice! Major life lesson there is just don't become prideful and think that you are the holder of God's wisdom, Knowing exactly the answer to everything in the scripture! LOL because only Jesus knew best how to walk that road! And when we become prideful and think that we know best, then what happens is we become Like the Pharisees who killed Jesus!
Yes exactly! While they didn't use that specific phrase, they did a beautiful job describing what being "under sin" (Rom. 3:9) looks like and explaining how Jesus came that we might "die to sin and live to righteousness" (1 Pet. 2:24). As a preacher, these are the kinds of descriptions that I spend hours trying to come up with in order to explain biblical concepts in a simple, clear, and helpful way. It's one thing for us to say "the captivity of sin" and quote some verses to back it up; it's another to actually explain what such phrases actually mean and to do so in a way that's faithful to the story and patterns of Scripture. That's what I really appreciate about these BibleProject videos!
@@stcmattbthat's very true, many just can't relate to such concepts, for us that study it they make sense, it's our language, but we must translate it to explain. I often struggle with keeping it simple, I go by what it says to the letter, agonizing over it.
LOVE the way the scrolls are animated. Showing the stories of the past and lighting the righteous path forward into the future. Such talented artists/animators💜
The bible is a bunch of books put together that were written to manipulate and control certain people and cultures I don't believe in crap that was made up by others There is a sea of inconsistencies in the book that you believe is god's word
I love the animation of this series so much, it makes me want to rewatch it to catch every detail! I especially love how fun and inviting Jesus is to each of the characters!
The devil wants me to give up on my faith but I WILL NOT! I know all things are possible with Jesus. So as I continue to struggle to provide for my children and myself I keep faith. Lord hear my prayers. I’m so discouraged as a single mother trying to make it on my own struggling to buy groceries struggling to pay bills but with you by my side Lord I cannot fail. Please continue to give me strength.
I'm so grateful how delicately and respectfully this series has examined Jesus' first-century Jewish contemporaries. One of the most shocking things I remember learning in seminary after a lifetime of practicing Mainline Protestantism was that Jesus himself WAS a Pharisee and every time he condemns them in the Gospels he's doing so as a member of their community. He was debating WITH the Pharisees as a communal insider, not preaching AT them as an outsider. Not understanding this has been key to literal millennia of violent Christian antisemitism and we as modern Christians have a duty to set the record straight and make overtures at healing the relationship we've historically broken between ourselves and Judaism. Again, thank you.
@nathanaelchood1399 I can understand what you meant & where you are coming from, but I would not classify & lump Jesus Christ together with the other "Pharisees" of his time, aka teachers of the Law, or rabbis in the Gospel as belonging in the same group or sharing similar characteristics. Its precisely because the Pharisees only see & focus on the external, appearance, surfacial adherance of the laws without comprehending & embracing the deeper essence, the spiritual nature that GOD had intended for the Law to point mankind towards, which is why we always find Jesus Christ in the gospels found to always be at odds towards the Pharisees teachings, these "rabbis" themselves through their own words & actions have repeatedly shown their antagonism in every ways, which only better illustrate the Christian dogma that no man can through our own efforts restore our relationship with GOD but only through submission to & learning from original Giver of the Law, the Word made flesh, the Lord Jesus Christ's righteous teachings & His death & sacrifice on the Cross as the fulfillment of the Law, so that no one may boast. Remaining steadfast against the teachings of the Pharisees, has nothing to do with being anti-semitic. It is unfortunate that the yeasts of the Pharisees has never stop attempting to sneak their way into the Church throughout history including periods when notable men in the Church through their own prejudice & self-righteousness created in certain segments of the Church, the culture of blame & hatred towards the Jews. These twisted teachings are not the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ, & despite the manipulations & attacks brought about by the enemy(satanic, spiritual princes of the air that wage war against believers) there are always Christians blessed with the gifts of spiritual discernment who knew otherwise even if there are times & periods in Church history when these opinions became so obscure & relegated as minority voices, the LORD has faithfully nurture a remnant faithful branch to continue to carry on His true Gospel throughout Church history.
Straight and narrow is the only way to reveal your true self. Just follow Jesus Christ teachings and you will find out. Walk by Faith and not by sight! 🙌🏻
