XR Wall Production - Behind the Scenes

If you’re unfamiliar with XR Production, you're not the only one. We filmed a project on a golf course in the mountains(?) - in Minnesota(?) - indoors(?) - on the hottest day of the year!?

XR (Extended Reality) blends digital visuals displayed on an LED Wall with practical set builds to create seamless shooting environments. By syncing the camera with the wall, productions can simulate fully 3D environments that move with the camera. This allows productions to capture scenes in real-time that would otherwise need expensive and time-consuming visual effects. Now artists can control and instantly change their environment, removing typical production hurdles like weather, time, and travel. XR has been adopted by major studios like LucasFilm, Warner Bros., Disney, and ESPN.
What did we learn?
- This won't replace in-the-field production - it will supplement it.
- It's perfect for enhancing tabletop, product, and FAQ-style shoots
- If done correctly, It's going to save a lot of people TIME and MONEY - especially when dealing with celebrity talent who have limited time on set.
- There is a burgeoning market for unreal engine artists
- The convenience factor was off the charts - having a pre-light day where we could leave our equipment set up overnight was invaluable.
- The wall itself is a light source that opens up interesting opportunities for lighting your subject
