That ship sailed for us. We stuck it out til now. We are moving to a new job and life outside China and can't see myself ever coming back. The last 3 years were tooooooo much.
I always check up on your channel to see if you posted a new video and I’m upset I missed this live. I miss your videos very much. Please post more often again. I’m definitely still interested in China related videos.❤
Good to see you back on UA-cam, Austin. I left China in summer of 2021 after a year in Kunshan following my 6 years in Chengdu. As much as I'd love to go back to the life I had, I don't think that's possible with everything that's changed in the industry in China as well as me moving out of teaching. Still holding out hope for a remote tech job that can land me in southeast Asia at the least.
I'm still casually studying pinyin years later. Work and such has kinda made it harder for me to dedicate myself to doing it on a daily basis. But as much as I romanticized the idea in my head of perhaps one day going to China to teach or work in some capacity, I think my physical situation will no longer allow for it. All that being said, I'm still very much interested in your Channel, your take, your experiences and footage there. It's nice to see a new video from you.
Back in 2020, I got stuck in Canada for almost a whole year while my wife was still in Canada. If I was single, I probably would not have fought as hard to get back. I probably would have just stayed there. I returned, and now we have a daughter. The lockdowns have been rough. We didn't even get paid during some of the harshest lockdowns. They eventually paid us everything they owed after the lockdown ended, but we had to wait for everything to reopen to get it. Wasn't our school's fault, the restrictions just made it impossible. Again, hard to say if I would have stayed if I didn't have a family here. I hope all that is behind us now. I do like China. But the past few years have been really rough.
I have followed you for about the last 6 years, I even binged most of your early videos from the day you left the U.S. I love your videos and find them very interesting. You do great work. I know it takes a lot of time to do this for us and I greatly appreciate it as I teach online daily conversation myself. Thanks for sharing, take care. Peace and welcome back.
Great to see you back. Was in China 2018- April 2022. Zhongshan and Kunming. Most likely headed back in August possibly to Hangzhou. Please do a comparative video between University and high-school, I did both and much preferred high-school. Possibly the difference in money.
Great to see you online again. I still have fond memories from our walk around Chengdu and sharing a meal. Hope you post again. News from China is pretty sparse. I have only seen a few videos by Chinese UA-camrs. I would like to see more Chinese students in USA too.
“What will China do to incentivize foreigners to come back?” Who says China, as a national policy and down to company level, are interested or see any value in becoming a multi-cultural society?
Just watched. Nice to see you back. Been 4 years since been to Shanghai. Planning to go back in July to see the inlaws. The cost of flights at the moment is yikes. Take care. Adam from the UK
Nice to see ya Austin. Glad things are going ok for ya and your going to stick it out. No doubt it will take some time for tourists, teachers and students to get back. I imagine in a couple years there will be much more people but I'm doubting it will be like pre pandemic ever again. They really ruined their reputation unfortunately. I don't think anyone will forget soon what they had to go thru the last few years and all the problems associated with it. I hope to sell some tours there but I'm not super optimistic. But maybe in a couple summers I'll try to lead some tours there for a month or so.
I'm a pretty hard core old china hand, 10 years or so in China...I love China....but i'm not sure I will go back anytime soon, people still wear masks for one, that is just not fun to be around, not seeing people's faces, it is damaging psychologically actually and they don't work at all, neither do the lockdowns. Pretty disappointed with how they treated people in Shanghai and all over, what will happen when another pandemic happens? Could be WORSE. peace from Thailand.
you either lied about your 10 years in China or you very ignorant of the country's system after spent 3,650 days there. The Chinese central govt wil ALWAYS intervene when they need to ensure no major public widespread issue, be it political or social. You are just selfish and think about yourself only. Glad you never returns to China as you don't fit.
Oh damn I missed it! I was awake too, doing my homework at 6am , haha. I'm studying in Taiwan now. I was hoping to come to Shanghai next week during the holidays, but visa still looks a bit tricky. (changed my youtube name, I was TaxiAsh before, haha)
Hello Austin. It's great to see you back again after a ling time ❤❤❤. Interesting to hear there's many teaching jobs opportunities available in China. Anyways that's a fun little walk and talk in the park. I'd like to hear your experience teaching in Hangzhou 😅😅😅.
Glad to see you post a video Austin. I watched your videos when I was first considering if I should move to China (about 8-10 years ago). I live in China still. I like it a lot, but I was definitely considering leaving China during the COVID lockdowns. You asked what the pros and cons are of being here. In my opinion, the pros of living in China are mainly based around being able to live in Chinese society. Chinese people are a united group who have a fairly civilized culture. They don't commit murder, they don't commit assault, they value family, they're kind to foreigners, they don't give any credence to woke think, they are hard-working, and I could go on and on. The negative is that there's basically no way you can ever really settle here. Even if you are married to a Chinese person (like I am now), it doesn't matter, you're not really going to be able to get a green card. Additionally, houses are extremely expensive compared to their quality, which makes purchasing a house a really bad idea, but if you don't purchase a house, you have to constantly hop from apartment to apartment, without ever being able to settle down.
Great to see you posting again! I wouldn't say my interest in China is gone but it has definitely been placed on the back burner. Other places have just been much easier/cheaper to get to from the US.
G'day Austin, long time no see! I'd love to return (to Chengdu) at some stage but am probably too old and decrepit to work as a uni teacher over there now. Moreover, if my contacts and observations are even half accurate there does appear over the past 5 years or so a different 'vibe'; but we won't go there, nudge nudge wink wink...😉 Nevertheless, if I was made an offer I couldn't refuse (sans horse's head) I'd certainly consider😂. Never say never! I'm still working here teaching Ancient History and English Lit at senior high, but now just on a casual basis. As you would be only too aware teaching fulltime at high school is a hard slog these days. I still love the classroom teaching aspect but the ever increasing admin crap didn't leave much, if any, time for travel and doing other stuff; it's all consuming! I'd often long for the 'workload' and lifestyle of an English teacher at SCU! Realistically, when or if I return to China, it will likely be as a tourist, but not for a while as airfare is ridiculously expensive from Aussie at present. Look forward to the next video!
I left China last year. I miss it and think it will always hold a special place in my heart, despite the fact I don't always agree with the way it is governed. I think when you have a government that basically says it's us against the world (or at least us against America), then eventually the rest of the world (and especially Americans) will feel unwelcome.
3 years out of China, but going back this year to get married. Not going to work straight away, but will be next year. Ex teacher. If not teaching going to start up my own business. Nice to see you chap. Its been hell of a while. Drew UK.
Hey Austin, glad to see you're alive and well \m/ I plan to return to China, when the stars align for me, simply because I prefer Chinese culture and people in comparison to the West. Currently it's difficult to plan anything with all the uncertainty and Geopolitics atm though ~
Hey Austin. Just passed my tefl 120. I’m interested in working at a university in Chongqing (open to Chengdu and qingdao also as alternatives). I have a few years of experience teaching esl outside of China. What is a minimum salary I should accept at a uni in Chongqing? Can you provide any contacts or recommend any websites? There are fresh grads every year so life is just starting for them. So, no, It is not too late for them. But for old buggers, maybe so. Convenience and price will be a determining factor for new expats. Right now the price of flights are way too high but when things normalize, you will see young new expats make their journey.
I’m one of the people who loves China and will be coming back in Fall or Winter this year. I know at least in my circles, people are ready to come for both business and tourism. In my opinion the less foreigners, the better.
Hello Austin. Actually i am one of your student in China! But i cannot tell you which city i am in or Which school that i've met with you. You can have a guess. Hahah
Hi can you and viewers please share your thoughts on this: I am thinking about doing course to teach English in China. I am English with British passport living in UK but I was not born here. I am not native speaker as I was born in Poland. I speak Chinese at hsk 5 level. Do you think there is a chance to get teaching English job in China for me??
Message me on wechat when ur back in Chengdu and we can have some shaokao n couple of beers like the good old days! Nice to see you out here at least > )
I hope I will be able to visit China again later this year. The world has changed a lot in these three years (not always for the best) and what was before will probably (never?) come back again. In the future China will focus more on contacts with countries in Africa, South America(and Russia?) and contacts with "the West"/USA will become less important. The video quality is kinda awful btw, it looks as if you're using a nineties cellphone😉😉
I’m still trying to keep my carbs low, yeah - although I’ve dialed back the fat content. I was off it for a while, but I got back on at the start of this semester. Feeling a lot better!

Tolerance is reciprocal: when USA declared economic war on China, this is what happened, this is my guess.

I still remember before I moved to China I watched your videos to get more information and I'm still here

Ticket prices are still so high from the U.S. Waiting for those to come down.

No joke!! Flights are nuts
