- A guide to help you get a good Roman helmet with a reasonable price.
Originally, Roman helmets were influenced by the neighboring Etruscans, people who utilised the "Nasua" type helmets. The Greeks in the south also influenced Roman design in the early history of Rome.
H. Russell Robinson in his book The Armour of Imperial Rome, published in 1975, classified into broad divisions the various forms of helmets that were found.

Your hair has gone from Jesus to metal.
lol
Lol so true
+dreyrugr you avatar... is it the hammer of thor of the battle ax of perun?
+dreyrugr Don't you know Jesus was a R&R superstar?
+H Kone It's the hammer of Thor, Mjölnir
The Historically accurate one looks more aesthetically pleasing too
The exact design of Roman helmets varied a lot with time and place but no chin strap is a huge mistake.
+Dwight E Howell Indeed
+Metatron I have a request, if you haven't done this yet, could you review the ningato? it's a so called ninja sword that nobody knows if they were actually used or not.
Expressionless I have a full video about the ninja where I think I mention something about that and I talk about the ninka to in the video were I discuss drawing from the back, just can't remember which one of the three where I do
Metatron okay, thank you for telling me.
Glue might help.
"One Roman helmet please."
"But there's no crest."
"You want crest 3 $."
"What?"
"No crest for you!"
me dont founding a montefortino for less than 250+euros
Honestly, the cheap helmet doesn't deserve any kind of crest. It's despicable.
You can tell his emotions between the helmets
Cheap: 😑😑😑😑😑
Accurate: 😀😀😀😀😀😀
One is a helmet the other is a head bucket
Drinking game: Take a shot everytime he says helmet or historically accurate
i now have alcohol poisoning
Hmm, I do love hospital trips
Xhawengd sucheshfool
I fucking love this channel.
+albinotatertot I'm glad you do :D
+Metatron Good job bro and keep up the good work. Im making an independent film about the roman empire and im trying to be as historicaly accurate as possible. I need to purchase 7 roman soldier helmets which will complete 20 soldiers ill be using for the movie. Do you know where I can have someone make these as movje props before having to buy the real thing. Thank you for your time.
+Metatron Shit you grew your hair, long as mine now...you almost look metal hahaha!
7dayspking Yes, the Metaltron LOL
Metatron Very true hahaha! You should whip out a pseudo renaissance frilly shirt, shave your beard and you could pretend you're Yngwie Malmsteen.
I wish to form a legion with my friends and re-live the life of a Roman soldier
Go and crucify some profligates, soldier.
DON'T TREAD ON THE BEAR.
NCR FOREVER!!
Marching all day in full armour, carrying around 20-30 kilos of provisions, weapons and tools... That sure should be fun!
Be ready to wipe your butt with a vinegar soaked sponge in a communal toilet!
Your gunna need a lot of friends for a whole legion, maybe hope for a cohort to start with~
I must say that I'm somewhat surprised by just how different they look when you are wearing them. While all the important details are definitely either different or just missing in the cheap helmet, it's overall shape looks the same when you are just looking at it. But when you put it on, WOW, the historically accurate one just fills out your head so much better and looks much more imposing and intimidating. Much better.
That being said, I'm not a huge fan of all things Roman. Not that they aren't cool, just not my thing. Now, a Viking helmet, THAT'S what I'd like. Much more my style. I must find a decently high quality Viking helmet!
+Kyle Flanagan I see my Viking friend :D
are you talking about skyrim viking or historically accurate viking?
+Crazyjedi2 Um, no, I'm talking historically accurate. Skyrim can be fun, but first they are not vikings (just based on vikings) and second their armor and weaponry are far less efficient than realistic armor and weaponry.
+Kyle Flanagan Yeah, the spectacle helmets are boss!
+Rebypox No no, bosses go on the shields!...
...
...
...I would like to apologize for making this joke. It was beneath me and none of you good people should have had to have been subjected to it.
In historically accurate Roman helmet you look like an mighty badass. In cheap Roman helmet reproduction you look like a derp.
Christian Changer I agree
You mentioned height between a Legionary and Auxiliary helmet. I never knew that difference existed. Could you elaborate on this?
I'm loving this channel! Keep up the good work, friend!
The Romans had badass helmets!!!
You have the best UA-cam channel! I love the story and your data is always very interesting! Thanks man!
Hmm... There's a mile of difference between "sympathize" and "empathize"...
Thank you a lot Metatron for great videos and nice music. Many UA-cam chanels dont like to post music that they used in video.
Great video! You should certainly do more of these with other pieces of your equipment like your Lorica Segmentata.
Metatron! You are such an inspiration and legend! Love your videos!
+EpicMLKGamers Thank you so much I appreciate your words ^^
Metatron, you rule. I've been LOVING these videos.
I love the music you have!
Nice advices thx a lot!
With your videos we have learned a lot. Thanks.
So interesting, I love your channel! I bought a cheap helmet and I know now where I went wrong, but I’m not upset with my purchase because it wasn’t too expensive, and it does look very decorative around the house, and as you said if you just want it for decoration purposes it’s perfect.👍
Awesome channel, subbed.
very informative. Thank you very much for sharing
Is it ironic how Jesus is talking about Roman helmets?
Nice Video and congrats on the channel growth lately.
+peter noone Thank you very much ^^
Informative video, love the Valete.
Do you know where one might acquire good Lorica Hamata?
i dont know what it is with this video specificly but its one of my most favourite videos of Metatron
Just the informative video I’ve been looking for. This is good to know, because I didn’t want to order something just for display.
I want to see him do a comparison between a cheap, and a historically accurate roman catapult.
I am looking for a historically accurate spanish morion helmet 16th century with chin straps where can I find one? Please help me I want to use it for display and reenactment
I'd only paid attention to armour in video games and Hollywood but I must say this channel is awesome. So much eye opening info.
Swords on your back for one. It looks so natural yet you make so much sense debunking Hollywood and as for this one, the authentic one looks so badass. Squat and solid. Atop a solid legionary I'd think twice.
hi, would the romans wear something similar to a padded coif to cushion against blows or the helmet itself? or just wear the helmet as it is?
What if I want to have a helmet to use when I have to quell a plebeian revolt?
Ya mean...for a tummy ache?
I don’t know if you had this problem before, but recently I’ve bought a Roman helmet and the bolt thing that keeps the bar(?) attached in the front came out and I don’t know how to put it back in. Any ideas?
Bonjour mon ami. I am wondering what is the best affordable gladius that is historically accurate and that is functional. What is your recommendations?
I wanna to larp as a wizard musketeer double class what helmet do you recommend?
Which variation letter variation are you showing in this video? It looks like it could be Gallic G or H?
A question and possible video-topic for the Metatron!
What gear would each of the roman kingdom and republican troops wear. Like Hastati, Principes, Triarii, Velites, Equites and any other I most likely missed. Type of helm, armor, sword, shield, javelin and sandals.. All gear, all units, all sub-periodes (early, late, specific incident.). What were the equipment made of?
And if I am right. Before Gaius Marius, legionaries acquired their own gear. Did all of the, say, Triarii have the same gear? or did some of them have a breastplate and others just a gambeson?
If you could make a video about this I would be most pleased!
Did you use gallic imperial helmet type G for the good quality one?
Metatron@
I am curious about the history of the spangenhelm
Been searching on early version of the Roman version
I wonder how they looked when the barely adopted then in 300 ad
I can't find any sources for this
Did they really look like how they looked in Attila total war? I would assume an early version if there is one would be there instead
do you have any link for good helmet. Also im looking for non historic acurate armor like in the tv show "Rome" like the Evocati or Officer armor.
i am collector of roman coins,...a helmet to find ...a dream
Hey again Metatron.
Great video
My reasoning is because I'm a huge history buff, and would like to start collecting historical armour/weapons and to display them in my office. Or at least some of them lol
Hey Metatron, I am on historicalrealmclothing.com and I noticed I saw two helmet types. Gallic and Italic. If I am trying to make roman legionnaire outfit from the mid 100's ad should I get a gallic or italic helmet?
Would you have to have custom fit Roman armor, or can you use something that just about fits? What about the helmets?
hey there. I hope you can find the time to reply to this one, but are the roman helms also Indian steel such as Derpeeka? if so are these alright quality for use as both reenactment and as a functional helmet?
what about pre imperial helmets? I was 15-17 when I was into roman history mainly before and around Gaius Julius, do you have any of those to compare? or are there any difference?
+John Doe and by Gaius Julius I mean the Gaius julius who died 44 bc.
I have a historically accurate one that I found on amazon thank god they actually have it. The only problem with mine is the hinges holding the cheekplates are going outwards, so the helmet doesn’t look right.
Then the hinges may need to be reversed as this type of helmet, the cheeks go in so you can rest it on your breast plate as you carry it during a march
Any tips on swords? Looking to buy a viking sword. but i'd love to know how hard the steel should be and weight so on and so on.
I’m glad I got the historically accurate one before watching this video
Would you be able to recommend an armorer for a sparring helmet or better quality one?
I am puzzled what is the purpose of the horizontal ridge above the eyes? Close-ups in your video seem to show these are hinged, and perhaps can be raised up? The "historic" version is quite narrow, I can't imagine it has any use as a sun shade. Perhaps these serve to keep rain out of the eyes? Any explanation you can give would be appreciated.
RiP I have the cheap verion pretty much the exact one haha. But I just wanted one so whatever :) But did all legionary roman helmets look exactly the same? (and btw who made them at the time most have been a billion blacksmiths haha)
+PontifexMaximus There were many different types, this historical helmet is a imperial gallic type H, but you also have type E type F etc I'll make a video about it ;)
Once again, another cool vid. I'm absolutely in love with Roman Gallic helmets and I've wanted one for a while, but I haven't been able to find any stainless (but otherwise historically accurate) versions. I live in a _very_ humid area, which would make constant oiling and polishing a huge hassle. Anyone know of any stainless helms?
+BajsanTheEvilMastermind Look at kult of athena. I got a helmet from them that looks exactly like the one he has here on this video.www.kultofathena.com/images%5CAH6053N_2_l.jpg
+constellationpegasus Thanks for the link! :D
SupaTheEvilMastermind My dream is to have one in my living room, especially the Gallic helmet. Along with that the Lorica Segmentata.
Just purchased an historically accurate Roman Gallic H from Armae for about $150.00 U.S. Fantastic piece!! Shipped from France to the U.S. in only a few days as well! As always, the Metatron is right on it!! Really beautiful helmet! The Romans were totally cool and functional.
From we’re?
The site/company is Armae, based in France. High quality and historically correct, just as the Metatron recommended. @@Dontknow-ol8dl
What the best helmet in general?
What's the music piece at the wearing time please?
I have a question- How come the helmet is not more enclosed? I would have thought the helmet could benefit from at least a nasal. The back of the neck and the cheeks are well protected, but the face is quite open. Is there a reason for this beyond the helmet being 'good enough'?
I am in the US, could you suggest a good place to find a helmet that you could recommend ?
Hey metatron I just bought the same helmet you have that's a nice replica. What model is it called because all the models I look at either don't have the brass ear protection and the front forehead loop.
Imperial gallic G.
Excellent video Metatron! I would love to see one done with cheap vs accurate Greek helmets, but the good ones will cost you about.. $500 USD. ;) Be a great video though. Heheheh!
How do you pad your helmet to actually make it wearable? Maybe explain to us your techniques?
what type of helmet would a belgae celtic roman auxillary wear?
Excellent video!
I went to Armae, and i found out they have many different timepriods equipment and i found their napoleontic swords and 16 century helms and many other things very cheaply....i mean too cheaply!I am not a collector yet so i cant tell, are they of good quality for such a low price?I mean a Morion for 50euro or a Prusian saber for a 160 and many more. They dont state what steel they are made of so that makes me suspicious.Whats your opinion Metatron?
+Greg Makropoulos No, ignore anything that is not Roman. It's mild steel (Indian sheet metal). The Roman ones are ok, but anything medieval or late medieval just go for an armourer.
Would you do destructive testing on the crappier quality items to see just how much punishment they could actually stand up to? That'd be fun to see, I think.
The 1,2mm deco helmets are not suitable for taking hits. No matter if they are authentic or crap.
grazie fammi sapere.
the historically accurate one looks really sci fi-ish when you wear it! awesome!
Say I want to do Roman Re enacting. What vendors are the places to go?
Metatron, what type helmet did the Romans use at the time of Christ, early 1st century AD? Google says rhat it was the Imperial Galic, but they came along later on.
Good job bro and keep up the good work.
Hey Metatron I love your videos. I am looking to buy some lorica segmentata armor. However I am a pretty thin guy with a 36" chest. Most pieces I see for sale are 44"+ which is way too big for me. Any ideas where I can find one that would fit?
find a place where they make them for you and you only
I often wonder why the brass rivet on the rim is always off-centre?
Is there a way to purchase medium quality whole roman (legionnaire) armor (including helmet, weapons, shield, shoes) ?
Dominic G ''Battlemerchant'' is what you are searching for i think
Could probably just mod the cheapo to have the cheek loops.
its not just the cheek loops though.
Love your channel and I agree with you on most parts of this video. However as a historical fencer I always have a bad feeling when someone recommends helmets like these for sparring without clarification on the ruleset that has to be used. These helmets no matter how well they are made will fo example never protect you against a thrusting motion and this can happen easily by accident. So for training with an authentic feeling sureuse them, but definitly not for full contact sparring.
What happened to the Roman Legionarie's invalided out due to injury?
Its hard to shop from the 2 sites u mentioned i cant read german or latin...
might I ask where you bought your Roman armor? I'm thinking of making a reenactment with my friends
Speaking of crests.
I think you should do a video solely on crests if you haven't.
If you have, can you link me the video?
Holy shit! This was made on my birthday three years ago!
I live in Romania and seeing the 70 dollar helmet like 200 and something in Rons, and I don't want to make. A mistake as I want to collect helmets and if I wanted to get all the helmetets I wanted it whould cost 1.200 Rons, I wanted a ww1 stalhelm or ww2 stalhelm, crusader helmet, Roman gallic helmet and a spiked ww1 helmet. Can you put in the description or comments the links of where you got the helmets?
My helmet seems to be in between the 2, I didn’t have a loop to secure a string for the cheekplates with so i drilled a hole to feed a string through. I had the hardware at the top to add the plume however. I don’t think ill buy another one anytime soon because no one really called the inaccuracy yet, my dirty little secret for now.
Do you have an option for visually accurate helmets that are cheaply made for display purposes only?
Cool! Great for collector and museum. Halloween wearing is optional.
The LARP shop I usually go stopped selling cheap plate armor and got only "battle-ready" stuff in its catalogue (barred the weapons of course). I was able to get a good functional 3/4 armor at a decent price (not very cheap to be honest) with a VERY confortable and sturdy burgonet.
And what do you think about hellenic-art site ?
The picture of the man in plate armor. What helmet is he wearing?
could you give me the difference of cost in historically accurate compared to cheap versions?
If you haven't already, you should do a comparison of the Ancient Spartan helmet popularized by the "300" movie, and how close it comes to a historically accurate example.
Not even close.
If I’m interested in begging re-enacting, should I get a cheap set of stuff to try it?
Great looking guy
Metatron, I’m aware of Sikh traditional hairstyles relating to head protection and helmets. I understand that samurai hairstyles may have had a practical aspect relating to wearing their helmets. Could you do a video on classical or medieval hairstyles and whether they fit with that cultures helmets?
@2:39 reminds me of American football helmets from the 1970's vs helmets used today
what if I buy a centurion helment and centurion armor and used it for paintball would it be disrespectful?
MrGrandFern don't think so, I mean it's not like it's an original pristine from the empire era.
Oh no i had to do it
