This would have been around the time of Gwyneth Jones' amazing Covent Garden Isolde opposite Jon Vickers and a little before her stunning Covent Garden Turandot.
Her vibrato could be heavy, especially in her later years but the sound Dame Gwyneth could create was unbelievable. It was like you were touched by a stingray. Simply electrifying.
So grateful I had the chance to see her live. Best Brünnhilde of my lifetime.
Wonderful voice, perfect German, great expression, powerful to the highest notes. IMHO the best Wagnerian soprano.
I would say the best was Frida Leider, but Jones was one of the best of her generation for sure.

I wonder if her vibrato sounded so heavy live as it does on recordings.
I didn't think so and I heard her in 1994. Of course it was Elektra so there was a lot of noise happening between the singers and orchestra.
Her vibrato did not record well. Live it was an electric pulse that shook the air and penetrated you to the bone.
