How to Make Infusoria for Baby Fish
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 лис 2018
- Congratulations on your new baby fry! But now you need to feed them infusoria (or tiny microorganisms) because they’re way too small to eat traditional fry foods. After researching how fish farms create infusoria, here’s the easy, bulletproof way for making infusoria at home.
MATERIALS I USED
▶ Clear jar (can use larger container depending on how many babies you need to feed)
▶ Aquarium water (without cyclops or daphnia) or dechlorinated tap water
▶ Organic material (such as cut-up and blanched lettuce, grass clippings, fry food, algae wafer, cooked rice, or yeast)
▶ Sunny window or a desk lamp to keep water warm: amzn.to/2E4iKL5
▶ Optional air pump with airline tubing for light aeration: amzn.to/2P96gms

"well....because I'm just Asian like that...." omg girl, I laughed and almost spit my coffee out! Oh how I wish I had your video editing and presentation/voiceover skills. I am going to start over and use this as a guide. Thanks so much! Love your videos!
Yes, goal accomplished! So thrilled to hear I could make you LOL in real life. Thanks so much for the encouragement too! So grateful for this FishTube community and how supportive we can be of each other. 🤗
@@GirlTalksFish Irene, my spouse hates all tiny things (baby fish, bugs, single celled organisms, eggs, holes, etc). They couldn't watch the video but just guffawed (much needed laugh) when they overheard this part.
Thank you. I'm researching how to keep a container of infusoria fed, ready and available 24/7.
Any insights?
If I can figure out a free editing software, I will start uploading my breeding videos so other people can learn from my comical errors.
Right now I only have amphopod identification uploaded.
Well explain. Don't even need to ask question. Thank you so much
My pleasure! Glad I could help. :)
Thanks for starting the video with a congratulations! I had an unexpected unplanned spawning and noticed fry becoming snacks so I’m so stoked to see if any make it
Your explanation was over the top! Presentation was flawless and every detail of the entire video was easy to understand and interesting. This is one of the best videos on UA-cam! I had the same problems you had when I first tried breeding infusoria, but the way you explained it just released all of that negativity from my mind! I will try this method out as soon as possible. Thanks a bunch Ma'am!
Solid video, very helpful!
Life saver, thank you 😊
Helped me a lot. Thanks for the tip 👌
I loove your video, you real know how to present some serious staff i a simple way..
Rama Shema Thanks so much! Glad you liked it. :)
Always love your presentation. Congrats on breading honey gouramis.
Thank you! They just reached the 1 month mark and I'm surprised at how quickly they've grown. Baby brine shrimp for the win!
Awesome & thanks super useful tips
This was super helpful when I was surprised with 200 goldfish eggs 50 that hatched 4 days after being laid and they were happy with it
Oh nice. Thats great info thanks for sharing
My pleasure! I'm glad I was able to share a few tricks to making infusoria that's a little more reliable. :)
Thank you!
Sweet! i could use this for my corydora fry
Yes! I wish I had known to make infusoria for my cory fry; I feel like the survival rate would have been much higher.
corydoras is the singular form
Great video! Super helpful and very clear instructions. Thanks
Thank you so much! Lol btw love your avatar pic... too cute.!
A Gamer's Wife - thanks! Years ago I had a cooking blog. No one but you ever knows what it is, lol
Ohhh no way! That's awesome... thanks for sharing your super secret past. ;)
excelente video, new suscriptor, i love betta fish and all fish great video, greeting from ARGENTINA
Honey goruamis are so pretty 🤩
This is just at a time I need it most. I have tons of babies. Thanks for the awesome video!!
💧😁💙🐟💦
Yay, congrats on the many babies! What kind of fry are you raising up nowadays?
I have three nice broods of AC. Super Red Zebras, Yellow Labs and Red top Hongi, and I just had a massive spawn of Danios. Lots of fun. I have to do this. I have been feeding decapsulated bbs. I usually hatch my own but I've been so busy I'm cheating. I need to try this. 👍💚💖😁
@@DebTim Ooo do you like the decapsulated BBS? Do you feel like they're pretty equivalent to live BBS? I've never tried them before.
I much prefer hatching my own but nutritionally I understand they are the same. Hatching seems to be taking a back seat to the simple decapsulated form. My fish love them all. Have a great week!💖😁💗
Looks delicious. I might just have a try myself. Will decide between this and vinegar eels. Might just get taller and stronger with this diet. 😋
useful info and great video content, thanks to sharing
Thank you so much! Hopefully people can avoid some of the mistakes I made. :)
I love this video!!! :-)
Thank you so much! :)))
I’ve been creating infusoria for so many years and you can actually create it (without the possibility of it getting stinky 😅) with steamed rice. Yes, STEAMED RICE. Just find a clear jar and put some aquarium water in it (you can also squeeze some filter media to boost the infusoria) and add a couple grains of steamed rice and place it in a well lit room. After a couple of days, the rice will start to break down and the water will start to get cloudy. When this happens, wait for a day or 2 and the water will start to clear again. You will know that your infusoria is successful if you could smell a “sweet” odor from the culture. You could also see tiny critters swimming around if you flash a light on the side of the jar. Hope this helps! ☺️
Hey is there any specific way you make your steamed rice? And would everything else, as in the directions, stay the same?
Thanks alot
Excellent explanation! I am trying to find the brine shrimp video lol
You have to believe me when i say i LOVE YOU VIDEOS!!!
I am currently on my 16th day waiting on my infusoria to grow but it’s just a cloudy stinky mess! I’ll definitely be sure try this method out instead
This was such a relevant video that I needed. How do you do the animations? They look so good
Thank you so much! Yeah, my first batch was pretty gross... I think light/warmth and aeration are the keys. :)
Haha, you're going to laugh, but I use PowerPoint to make my simple animations. Some day I'll upgrade to something a little more official/powerful. ;)
@@GirlTalksFish Definitely not laughing. I feel like I am very limited, editing wise, with iMovie (it's all I have). I've been searching for an animation program. I am actually going to try working with powerpoint for animations, too!
@@neighborhoodman323 Hehe, now you know my secret! Use your powers well! ;)
Since we are an Asian household as well and also using a chopstick as support for airline to clean tanks, we always have cabbage in the refrigerator. I had my oldest daughter, born in Saigon, cut up several leaves, poured 125F water over it, and after cooling, added tank water. It's cold here and hardly any sunlight, and triple glazed windows prevent adequate sunlight, but we do have grow lights for the dwarf Meyer lemon tree that is brought indoors during winter, along with the Venus Flytrap and others. We started infusoria too late since our betta couple two days ago (Feb 10, for FOUR HOURS) released the eggs. Hoping to have infusoria soon, if not ready, will use mashed up egg yolk. Will also be trying Northfin 250 micron fry food (not a commercial plug). Fingers crossed.
Congrats on the new betta fry! Yes, best of luck to you and the new batch of babies. 👍
The worse part about culturing infusoria is the smell given off by the decomposing vegetation. A tip I picked up some time ago - rather than using green vegetable matter use banana skin, it does not smell anywhere near as bad and is just as efficient at feeding the little critters. I keep mine in my bedroom, not something I would recommend with the smell of rotting cabbage etc.
Great tip! Next time I make infusoria, I'm definitely going to try banana peel. :)
@@GirlTalksFish carrots work well, too.
The fry get full, orange colored tummies eating the bacteria.
This is great information. I am going to try to start some. I am about to start breeding some Killi’s so I will probably need this information.
Ooo, I definitely have not bred killifish yet. Which one are you starting off with and are they pretty easy?
Well I have an order coming in from Dan’s Fish. I have Epiplatys grahami , Procatopus similus,
Aphyosemion calliurum "Ogun" and
poropanchax luxophthalmus should be in Tuesday.
Holy cow, that Aphyosemion calliurum is _amazing!_ I can't wait to see your fry from all your new fish. :)
Awesome video!! You rock!! How about a gourami how to breed video?? :)
Yesss! I'm waiting till my babies get a little bigger so I have more footage of what they look like as slightly older juveniles. :)
Awesome
nice :)) good video :)
Thank you! I hope it helps others avoid some of the mistakes I did. :)
Excellent info! Does this mean if we have rotting aquarium plants underwater it means there are infusoria in there as well?
Anywhere bacteria is present, there are infusoria single celled organisms eating them to some degree.
This is why having a seasoned aquarium is so much more important than a cycled aquarium: get microorganisms growing to help broaden the available food sources for fish to increase survival and overall health.
Try using banana peel or rice straw or milk powder ... and dont forget to cover the top to the culture container with a fine mesh net to prevent form laying eggs by mosquito or flies specially blood worms
Lololol cause I’m Asian like that lololol this was an awesome Video much love and aloha🤙🏽🐠🤙🏽
Amirite? Sorry I don't have lettuce lying around, and if I did, I wouldn't be able to use it all up before it went bad!
I have some baby betta fry and their sooooooooo cute! thank you for making all of these amazing videos!
Good video
Thank you so much! Let me know if there are any other topics you'd like to see covered. :)
@@GirlTalksFish I am interested in learning how to hatch and raise killifish that are native to the countries that I serve in my job at thirst relief International. My main interests are Brazil Uganda Tanzania in India also DRC and Kenya
So interested in giving this a try! I have an adult betta who loves to hunt but can't eat very much. Would he be able to eat this?
New sub 👍💯✔
Thank you so much! Glad to have you in the community. :)))
Yummy info!!!!
Lol, thank you! Anything to keep those tiny fry alive and happy. :)
How many days did it take before you could use it to feed the fry?
What are Cyclops and Daphnia? I also have Detritus worms in my water. Will they eat the Infusoria if I take water from my aquarium?
How much time giant gourami need to breed?
What is the best food for goura
Sorry, I'm not experienced with breeding giant gouramis. Sounds like the biggest challenge might be getting a tank or pond that's big enough. Hope this helps! animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/anabantoids/GiantGourami.php#Breeding%20/%20Reproduction
I have a brand new aquarium and at this point there is nothing in it (no fish yet) that would 'seed' it with infusoria. So where do I get a the initial infusoria. Is it on the vegetables we buy from the grocery ? Do I just let them rot in warm water and infusoria will show up on their own?
On the second try how long did it take to get infusoria
So how many days did it take until the infusoria was ready to feed the fish fry
Thanks but can u feed it to betta fry?
I’m not quite sure if my used water has cyclops and daphnia
Hey update on my culture and it was a success! Now my question is could i put a blanched veggie on my culture to reproduce again?
I think so! I would just pour some of the culture out into a new jar and add some clean, dechlorinated water with the blanched veggie. I think the reason why people start a new culture is because there's no good way to do a "water change" and get rid of the waste?
so these infusoria are already in all plant matter?
I’m hatching killifish eggs from eBay and don’t currently have an established tank. Can I use regular water to make the infusoria or do I have to use tank water?
Great question! Yes, you can use tap water + dechlorinator, as long as you add a food source. It may take a little longer to get started, but it should work all the same. Some people also buy infusoria starter cultures on eBay, which will help boost your rate of success. 👍
Do we need to cover it pls tell
Can we use bread to breed infusoria
I have already made a culture and I don’t have any problem with it, it looks ok to me, from the videos I have seen on the internet. My question should have been I have used half of the starter kit I ordered from ebay, the second half is still in a air tight plastic bag, does it still need air? shall i leave it air tight? as i will use it later on to make a second culture
Hmm, I've never bought infusoria from eBay before, but I'd assume they need air, light, and nutrients eventually. Best of luck with your second culture!
"A gamer's wife" i bet the woman's movement loves your youtube handle. lol I think it is cute but just saying. Good video.
Lol, the username is a throwback to my days when I used to blog about my husband's life as a video game developer. He no longer works in the industry now, but I didn't want to waste my website URLand social media handles. So now I'm stuck with it, I guess. 😂
I'm planning to make my banded gouramis to spawn, the procedure should be almost similar to honey gourami. Do you have any idea how much infusoria do I need to get to the 2 week mark?
It's hard to quantify the amount of infusoria accurately, but I had to feed my gourami fry infusoria for 2 weeks until they were big enough to take baby brine shrimp. So you could make two jars of infusoria just in case, or just make some in a larger container. It's always better to have more, right? :) Best of luck with your breeding plans!
It's Day 6 and my culture is still milky and not clearing. Is that typical or do I have a problem? Granted we've had some cloudy days lately...
For me, I found that my culture took a while to develop, especially when I had cloudy days or cooler temperatures. Keep at it, make sure to stir things up every once in a while for aeration, and sounds like your culture should be on its way to success. 👍
@@GirlTalksFish Thanks! That's reassuring. Can you give me a sense of what "a while" might mean? Two weeks? Longer?
@@jaymiller3238 It really depends on temperature, lighting, water volume, and how dense you want the culture to be. By two weeks, you should definitely have some infusoria to feed. If you wait two more weeks, the infusoria should be even denser as long as there is still good oxygenation, food for them to eat, and not too much waste. I have heard of cultures crashing eventually, which is why people will start new/multiple infusoria cultures to make sure there's always a healthy population going. Hasn't happened to me because usually by that point my fry are big enough to eat baby brine shrimp, so I don't need the culture anymore. :)
@@GirlTalksFish Thanks so much. I appreciate the information you're sharing.
@@jaymiller3238 My pleasure! :)
I just make my own infusoria culture and i watch some youtuber put yeast in it and i did just that and the water started to get cloudy. Do I have to start a new one or just let it be?
Do ya put a cover on your culture or no?
Do ya put a cover on your culture or no?
Hey just wanna know. Do I need to put the jar under direct sunlight?
I don't have access to sunlight.
My infusoria culture is growing under an LED full spectrum that I use in my plant nursery, ~ 6" from the light.
Temp is 78° days and drops to 70° at night.
Hi
Is there a temp that’s too hot? Wonder if I could leave it out in the sun. It gets 85-95F outside. Would it be too hot?
Good question! I've actually never experimented with temperature/sun since I grew mine indoors. Why not try a jar inside and a jar outside to see which grows the best? I'd love to hear what you find out. :)
A Gamer's Wife it’s been so hot in CA that I haven’t tried outside. I put some old tank water in bottles under my skylight. So far... nothing. Going to try it outside and will let you know!
Will larger bettas enjoy this? I have a young one that obviously doesn’t need such small food but i wonder if hed like it anyway!
Hmm, that's a good question! I've never heard of feeding infusoria to adult fish since I assume at some point, they would become too big to really notice the microorganisms anymore. I have found that my adult betta will still eat baby brine shrimp if I offer it to him though. :)
A Gamer's Wife thank you very much!! :)
What fry is that
Hey, two of my sparkling gouramis mated on friday and this morning the babies hatched. I've never raised fish and I was wondering if making infusoria for the babies is too late and if it is, what should I do from this point?
Hmm, you might be out of luck with this particular batch of fry. Do you have any green water you can feed them? Here's an article that I found helpful for feeding tiny fry: www.thesprucepets.com/feeding-egg-layer-fry-4031870
Thank you! So far they’re ok buuut not sure how long they’ll last. I’m using aquarium co op easy fry food and hikari first bites
Let me know how it goes! Hope they do well. :)
End of day three and I still see about 10 hunkering down towards the back of the tank. There may be more but it’s hard to tell, it’s a heavily planted 5 gallon tank. It’s exciting but at the same time kind of heart breaking because I wasn’t prepared. But there will be a next time and I’ll be sure to be prepared 😊
@@donmelendez8224 Chin up! I know with honey gourami, they lay hundreds of eggs because there's naturally a very high fry death rate, even if you have perfect conditions. Not sure if it's true with sparkling gourami as well, but take heart because some of them might be natural die-offs.
60-70°F is quite cold
Why would you use a lamp then?
How to make red Infusoria ?
Can we use cabbage leaf
Yup! Really, you can use any kind of organic material. It helps if you cut up and blanch the cabbage leaf first. Good luck to ya!
How long do you keep an Infusoria culture?
I was only growing one batch of fry, so I kept it going for 2 weeks until they were big enough to eat live baby brine shrimp. However, if you have many tanks of fry, you can keep the culture going by starting a new one using water from the old culture. Just remember that it will take some time for the infusoria culture to grow dense enough to feed to your baby fish. Hope that helps!
@@GirlTalksFish Thanks a lot!Appreciate it
It's not an archaic term if it's still in common use
After how many days did your culture had shown infusoria and...
How many days did it last from the first day ?
Unfortunately, it seems to totally depend on how many infusoria your water originally contained, how warm the water is, etc. For me, I saw infusoria within the first week, but you need to build up more density to feed the fry. I'm not sure how long the culture will last since I ended up feeding it all to my fry.
@@GirlTalksFish I started 3 cultures at a time...
1 got ruined and turned black .
Hoping for rest 2....
today is 9th day.
@@chhaganbhai8870 Best of luck to you!
Great video. You mentioned your cory fry survival rates should have increased if you had introduced them with Infusoria.... Is this mean cory fries cannot be survived only with first bites during the first three/four weeks?
Good question! They can survive with only Hikari First Bites, but I believe my survival rate would have been higher if I had also provided some live foods like infusoria and eventually baby brine shrimp. 👍
How look Infosuria in jar water??
I saw several small white dots and worms. The microscopic ones of course won't be visible to the human eye without assistance.
Does it need yeast to make the infusoria?
Great question! You don't need it, but you can definitely use it as a food source to cultivate them.
Thks
How do I know that Infosuria are made or not???
You should be able to see small moving particles (as seen in the video). You can use a magnifying glass to help spot them.
