And more on the photographing the finished pieces for assembly purposes when it comes to actually polishing up the patterns. I would also like to see more about how to go about doing complicated patterns. I like to draw a lot of my inspiration for amigurumi from video games and I've been wanting to do patterns for the creatures from Ooblets. But a lot of those creatures have a lot of parts and details. I've also been wanting to do some Fall Guys amigurumi plushes.
This is such a clear explanation of the steps! I'm American, but I was taught the basics of metric in my biology minor 40 some years ago. As I have used the internet I've worked on a solution for when projects or cooking recipes are in metric. I don't even try to convert between the 2 systems. I have measuring tools in imperial and also in metric. I use the tools I need for how the pattern is written. I long ago learned the crochet terms in both US and UK. I'm 75 now. I forget more easily now. So if the pattern is UK I now put the US abbreviation in bracket with each row. This works for my math challenged brain. My husband was station in Germany for 8 years. He learned to do the math in his head to convert from one to the other. That means he is rattling decimal fractions in inches at me. Which then means I have to convert the decimal fractions to 1/4s,1/8s, 1/16s, etc. That puts me into total brain misfunction. 😢😢😢 Inch rulers here in the US do not divide into 1/10s of inches. So I stick to using the tools for the system instructions are using. It works with less stress for me! Also I'm number dyslexic. I was an Army brat. We moved every few months. There were sections of arithmetic books never saw until I was 23. I had to take Teaching of Arithmetic at that age. It was the first time I was taught math from start to finish in proper order. I joke that I don't do above 3rd grade math. My daughter is good at math. She's getting an electrical engineering degree and is doing high level calculus. I'm a proud mama.😊 I'm so enjoying your videos on how to design. Thanks for them.

I learned how to crochet by buying a pattern and painstakingly watching youtube videos for each stitch I had to learn, so I never learned how to make things without using a pattern. Of all the guides on YT, this is the most helpful, least gatekeeping one I've found. It's so hands on and detailed and practical that I actually think I can do this now. I so appreciate the insight into your designing processes!!! I've followed patterns for around 5-10 amigurumis of varying complexity, in addition to a few years of odds-and-ends clothing crochet (lots of scarves, a few hats, and one pair of house slippers). Your breakdown here makes me feel that this process is perfectly attainable with my current skillset. I think I'll set a goal to design and complete my first amigurumi by the end of calendar year 2023 (around 7 months). Wish me luck!

This video was super helpful! In addition, whenever I try designing amigurumi I'm going to put my own tips in this comment that have helped me and I think could help others!! If anybody uses these let me know!! *TIPS!* 1. I like to use the measuring tip not only for the # of rows, but for the # of stitches as well! I only measure at a few key spots so I can let the slicing do the rest. 2. If you're having a hard time determining the spacing for your stitches (especially if you applied tip 1), or it's hard to determine the 3D shape of it row by row, draw a circle and label the front & back/top & bottom of your shape! then you can plan things and space things out easily. 2a. If decreases are tough to figure out with the circle, slice it up like a pie so your decreases fall on the tips of those lines, then draw a circle around it to indicate there's two stitches being used up! 2b. EDIT: this was before I watched the shaping guide video and omg how did i predict that circle usage 3. A tip for amigurmi in general: if you have a ton of stitch markers. use them. *ALL* of them. I place stitch markers on every stitch(es) I need to increase and decrease, and it makes counting so much easier bc all you need to worry about it having the correct amount of stitches when you start your row!!

I love that you added the nostrils into the piece instead of adding them on to the base later. Not sure how - I’m a beginner- but it looks great that way. If you make another video maybe add how to make bits that stick out like that while you design

I started designing patterns a couple months ago, and I thought of counting out the rows, but I figured the curves would mean I'd have to do circumference math and I got a little confused. I never realized until I saw you do it that that wasn't necessary. You saved me a lot of headache and really opened up my world, thank you so much!!

I completely mean Girl in a positive, a sisterhood kind of sense, not in any negative way what so ever!!!I I only clarify that due to your age and I don't want to seem as though because of the difference I would think of this as looking down upon you, actually far from it I'm looking up to you, and I don't want the way things can be twisted these days to make this look negative. I probably didn't need to explain all that, but just in case I do there it is. I am 53 years old and started learning crochet when I was about 7. I am in no way even a rookie/newbie and am likely back to knowing hardly anything because I can't seem to get some things as I should have been able to just go with but I'm struggling a bit, but that is beside the point.... you have taught me so much more than I did know, I think because my mom had a limited amount of knowledge to teach me more, and you have way more knowledge than she had. I do know at least the basic crochet stiches, the terminology and the abbreviations in most cases, so it's mostly getting my hands to work correctly and regain that muscle memory back and then I'll be flying again!!! not only have you taught me more about the process of creating the items themselves, now you.re teaching me how to create patterns as well!!! Girl, YOU ROCK!!! Oh and I love the hippo!!! Just a suggestion.... the addition of the nostrils really made it appear even more realistic!! A shade or two darker yarn would do so even better maybe, as they are pretty big openings in real life...more shadowed in.

I love this series! I know you probably are finished the series but I personally would love more videos like part 2 of this video, where you did the worm but different shapes and animals, etc. For example I’m trying to create a basic foot that decreases into a straight leg because the pattern I am following from this particular person butchered the legs and is not eligible (I already had to figure out counting mistakes in the body). However the foot and leg are crocheted as one piece separately and then attached at the bottom of the body. I’m stuck at making a sinch before the leg and heel and then to go straight up single crocheting after lol and the hippo/worm just almost explain it but I need to know essentially how to make an L shape in rounds. Thanks for listening to my rant lol and I totally spelt “Sinch” wrong but I feel like you would understand what I’m trying to get at.

ON GOD same. I saw the front, side, and top views and went ahhhh, we're literally doing orthographics now. even the pieces are just an assembly drawing with a little less busywork and title blocks

I love that you added the nostrils into the piece instead of adding them on to the base later. Not sure how - I’m a beginner- but it looks great that way. If you make another video maybe add how to make bits that stick out like that while you design

I started designing patterns a couple months ago, and I thought of counting out the rows, but I figured the curves would mean I'd have to do circumference math and I got a little confused. I never realized until I saw you do it that that wasn't necessary. You saved me a lot of headache and really opened up my world, thank you so much!!

GIRL, You are amazing!!! I completely mean Girl in a positive, a sisterhood kind of sense, not in any negative way what so ever!!!I I only clarify that due to your age and I don't want to seem as though because of the difference I would think of this as looking down upon you, actually far from it I'm looking up to you, and I don't want the way things can be twisted these days to make this look negative. I probably didn't need to explain all that, but just in case I do there it is.
I am 53 years old and started learning crochet when I was about 7. I am in no way even a rookie/newbie and am likely back to knowing hardly anything because I can't seem to get some things as I should have been able to just go with but I'm struggling a bit, but that is beside the point.... you have taught me so much more than I did know, I think because my mom had a limited amount of knowledge to teach me more, and you have way more knowledge than she had. I do know at least the basic crochet stiches, the terminology and the abbreviations in most cases, so it's mostly getting my hands to work correctly and regain that muscle memory back and then I'll be flying again!!! not only have you taught me more about the process of creating the items themselves, now you.re teaching me how to create patterns as well!!! Girl, YOU ROCK!!!
Oh and I love the hippo!!! Just a suggestion.... the addition of the nostrils really made it appear even more realistic!! A shade or two darker yarn would do so even better maybe, as they are pretty big openings in real life...more shadowed in.

I love this series! I know you probably are finished the series but I personally would love more videos like part 2 of this video, where you did the worm but different shapes and animals, etc.
For example I’m trying to create a basic foot that decreases into a straight leg because the pattern I am following from this particular person butchered the legs and is not eligible (I already had to figure out counting mistakes in the body). However the foot and leg are crocheted as one piece separately and then attached at the bottom of the body. I’m stuck at making a sinch before the leg and heel and then to go straight up single crocheting after lol and the hippo/worm just almost explain it but I need to know essentially how to make an L shape in rounds. Thanks for listening to my rant lol and I totally spelt “Sinch” wrong but I feel like you would understand what I’m trying to get at.

I ended up coming up with an idea of something I wanted to make, but I have been procrastinating it for weeks because its a bit ambitious considering I haven't really made my own patterns before. a someone studying to be an engineer, I'm quaking at the similarities in orthographic drawing with the concept sketches (which is my favorite part of the design process). this sort of thing is right up my ally.
ON GOD same. I saw the front, side, and top views and went ahhhh, we're literally doing orthographics now. even the pieces are just an assembly drawing with a little less busywork and title blocks
