You have another challenge on your hand, but I will enjoy watching you bring this back to life. Your projects always bring me back to my childhood, working on things with my father. If only we had UA-cam back then!
That is very interesting, I guess most of us have done father and son projects at some point. We like a challenge so this will be a fun project. Take care
The Bolens tractors like you said have really made some advancements thru the years. Good luck as you go thru it and get it back in shape. Thanks and take care
Thanks. It will be really hard to find parts over here so we always try to work out what we think we need early so we can go searching for parts. Take care
My interest is in checking the piston condition. If it rotates I'd clean and install the head gasket. You are right on with your inspection and root cause analysis. Glad to see you guys again! Best regards to your family.
It is fantastic to get a message from you, I hope everything is good with you. I expect you have the snow on the mountains already. Thanks for your suggestion. Take care
Hello Joseph. I think Garrett is very lucky to have you as his friend. I really have no doubt that you two will get this tractor operational again. Take care, Ben.
Will be great to see how this evolves 👍Were it me, I would remove the stator straight away to avoid damage and just let it run off of battery till you get the engine plan sorted. Look forward to more !
Thanks for the advice. As such we have decided to remove the flywheel first to investigate that stator and give better access to repair the flywheel mount. Take care
Sounds like you have a bit of work ahead of you on this tractor. I’m sure you will be successful in this project. It’s a nice looking tractor when it was new.....CHEERS
Thanks for your words of support. It will be an interesting project and we like a chllenge. We prefer the looks of the older Bolens but it appears to be a well made tractor. Take care
Great video guys. I really like the comparison of the 2 tractors. I am more fond of the old machines. The GT2000 definitely needs some attention. BRAVE CAMERA MAN !!! He is kind of like a stuntman double lol. Good luck with this project. I'm looking forward to it. Take care
Thanks. I agree, the older machines are a lot more attractive and fun to use. The cameraman will like having the title of stuntman double LOL. Take care and I hope you have a good week
Hi Joseph! New subscriber here, Noel sent me, and wow you've got a great channel. Congratulations!! Excited to watch the progress you make on that Bolens project. Should be very interesting indeed. Looks like you've got a ton of great videos that I need to watch and get current on, it will be fun!! Take care, and I'll talk to you later!! Ed, from central Oklahoma.
Hi Ed, welcome aboard, I am pleased you have subscribed and will be following along. I think we have made over 300 videos now so I would suggest just picking a few to watch. Take care
Hello Joseph, Another interesting project... on the starter motor mount the new backplate looks a good idea, maybe some JB Weld you be used to rebuild the broken hole in the casting thus giving extra support. The engine test bed is a cool idea. I was thinking that maybe the fuel tank from the 1960 Ride-a-matic project you be added to your test bed, Take care. Paul,,
Thanks. It sounds like our thinking is much the same as you. We have a fuel tank from a Kohler from a rotovator we are planning to fit and are going to mount a starter solenoid also. Once we have finished this project we plan on using this to test other engines. Good idea about JB Weld, we had not thought about doing that, thanks. Take care
How's she goin'? This is going to be an interesting project. I like the way you assessed the tractor and engine and then formed a plan based on your findings. And it sounds like a good solid plan moving forward. Good luck with this and take 'er easy!
I believe the side panels were designed to keep the engine noise down. It will be interesting to see how difficult it will be to install the engine. Take care
Thanks for your words of support. A big part of the challenge will be getting parts, so far we have not been able to locate anything for this engine in this country and as such we will probably have to import from the US. Take care
since you asked,, I think I'd pull the flywheel and see about that stater make sure it's ok and with the flywheel off it might be easier to work on the starter bracket you made also I think the cog on the starter is about had it.
That is a fantastic idea, thanks. I am pleased we asked and I knew you would have a good idea. You are right, the cog on the starter needs replacing but you would not believe how expensive they are over here. I think the cheapest we have found so far works out at about 273 dollars. We plan to see if we can use it as it is and then if the engine runs good we will import one from the US. I saw one on the US ebay site for 30 dollars although it will be another 30 dollars for shipping and about the same again for import duties. Take care
An interesting new project Joseph, lots of challenges, but you have the skills and knowledge to cope! Put an hourly value on your labour and charge your customer! A repair(rebuild!) like this would cost a fortune! I have never charged enough for my skills, don’t make the same mistake!! Phil
Lots of issues with this engine. Interesting to fix and learn from but lots to sort out and fix. The loose stator is concerning. On the starter bolt holes...gets me wondering if there is a chance to weld and re-drill the casting? The solid work frame you built will serve you well once it's running . Always nice to have things bolted down.
You are right, lots to fix and learn from this project. We do not have the tools to be able to weld cast aluminium but like you I would have thought it might be possible. I believe the tractor owner explored getting it welded and was told it would not work. We have been wanting to build a solid frame like this for a while now to be able to mount and test engines. Take care
Good looking tractor Joseph! I enjoyed your assessment and the process you all went through. A lot of things to fix but all seem doable. In the end you friend will have a great running machine. Do you think you will rebuild the starter? That would be cool to see. Thanks for sharing and take care!
Thanks 👍 We will attempt to rebuild the starter if we can get the parts. We will probably have to order the parts from your side of the pond. Take care
Great video fellas. Good plan Joseph. Quite a project. Does the engine have automatic compression release system to help on starting. If so, you won’t get a true reading of compression. And maybe easier to work on the starter mounting if to have the front tin and flywheel out of the way. Have a great day fellas. 👍🏻👍🏻👋👋
Thanks. That is an interesting point, I am not sure if it does have compression release or not we will have to investigate. I know Kohler liked to put compression release on a number of engines. I like your idea to remove the flywheel and tin to get better access. It will allow us to investigate the stator issue too. Take care
Good afternoon Joseph. The title scared me a bit. I thought that you were meaning giving up on something. I should have known better if you two. I need to have more faith in you guys.
Thanks. The biggest challenge we face is parts. So far we have not been able to find any parts for this engine or starter in the UK for a reasonable price. I think we will end up buying the parts from the US and rebuild it ourselves. Take care
That tractor suffered substantial abuse in the past, other than the water! You didn't mention how many hours are on it. I have 3 of those tractors, two 18 HP models & 1 diesel. Also had a "transition" model (same tractor) decaled as a "Troybilt by Bolens". It was red & got parted out. Eventually they were all Troybilt but the same tractor. Those Kohler Command engines are very stout IMO & yes crank seals are problematic. I would check into that stator issue before putting too may revolutions on the engine. Other weak spots are the plastic dash & the 2 speed shift lever connection at the gear box shaft. None of the fuel gauges work on my 3 units! They are very beefy tractors but can be very difficult to work on. By the way, the diesel is equipped with a 3 cyl Mitsubishi engine tagged as "Built for Bolens by Mitsubishi Industrial Engine Div. Looking forward to watching your endeavor.
Thanks for the information and your advice. The tractor has 1365 hours. Following your advice I think we will remove the flywheel first so we can investigate the stator and have better access to fix the starter mount. The plastic dash looks good on this one but it has had a very hard front impact at some point in the past. We have not worked on this model of Bolens before so it will be interesting. We decided to pass on a diesel version at an auction a few years ago and regret doing that. Take care
I'm dreading what I'll find on the Roper 16 Briggs. I would remove the flywheel first, sense it has to come off any how. That will make fixing the starter mount easier.
Good to see that Great Old Tractor is now in Good Hands and will, No Doubt, be taken care of Properly. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the kind words and support. We will do our best to get it running again. Take care

The old tractor had a hard life and not much maintenance by the look of things. That's a long list of repairs Joseph. Thanks for showing.
I think you are right, it will be a challenge to bring this back to life. Take care
Nice Garden Tracktor🚜
Best wishes
Thanks 👍
That's a very nice thing you and your Dad are doing to help out a friend. I hope it all works out good and I'll see you on the next one my friend 🔧👍

Dodgie welding, water submersion, and much more…I have full confidence you’ll get it squared away. I’m sure your friend feels the same way as I 😁👍
This tractor certainly needs some love :-) Thanks for your words of encouragement, it is appreciated. Take care
Now then Joseph you sure have a challenge on your hands with this one, and looking forward with the updates 👍👍

that was cool the way the side panels opened up, but like you said, still not as convenient as the open air motor design.
