Fortunately, I have a friend here in Chaing Mai who has a Thai wife who is a friend of someone high up at a Bangkok Bank branch. It was apparent after 5 minutes that without her I would have had a hard time opening an account. As it was she had to give a personal guarantee to the bank so they would open an account for me. Put over a million baht in there the next week and they can't do enough for me now :). They did tell us that they were apprehensive about farangs because of them opening accounts and then disappearing after overdrawing the account. Banking is very third world here still. I can't set up a standing order to pay my rent because the house owner is with a different bank???? Still, pay my utility bills at the 7-11 because it's such a pain to pay online. This is Thailand, learn to love it!

Sometimes you have to take things in stride, when you are in a foreign country patience is your best tool. One of the biggest problems Americans have abroad is they do not have the same rights as back home. Don't burn bridges before learning the lay of the land, you may need those people that upset you down the road. As a foreign citizen you don't have any rights there. Learn the language, and the ways of the country your in and the path to enjoyment will be yours. People will work with you as you learn their ways and leave your American attitude behind. I am now 69 and came to Chiang Mai in July 2014 on a one year Thai Visa based on Retirement. Current retirement requirements are at least 50 years old and 800k Baht in a Thai bank or 65k Baht monthly income or a combo of the two. When it comes time to renew my visa for another year, I go to the US Embassy and get a notarized letter stating my income. So far, I do not have a Thai bank account, although my Thai wife and family do. A one year visa based on marriage to a Thai has no age minimum and half the financial requirements as a visa based on retirement. We got married in Chiang Mai following the four steps listed on the US Embassy Chiang Mai Website. I think you may not only have to have your US marriage license translated to Thai (possibly can do that at any local translator business), but also validated by the Thai government as being a proper translation before it will be accepted, so check on that and be prepared for possible delays (hours or days) at each step. Once you have a one year visa, then other than the yearly renewal, you will need to do 90 Day Reports (in person, by mail, online or via an agent). Also, as a foreigner who is not living in a hotel, did you file TM-28 and TM-30 forms with your local police (donslifeinthailand.com/TM_28_TM_30.html)? I wired money to buy our house from my Charles Schwab Broker account to my wife's Bangkok Bank account using their New York Office Routing Number (domestic wire transfer). Charles Schwab charged $15 which was reimbursed and Bangkok Bank charged about 500 Baht (it's on their Website). It took about 3 days for the money to be available in my wife's account in Chiang Mai in Baht. I regularly withdraw 25k Baht at Bangkok Bank ATMs in Thailand using my Charles Schwab Bank Visa Debit Card. Charles Schwab does not charge ATM withdrawal fees and reimburse the Thai bank 200 Baht fees (up to a limit each month). Suggest gargle with warm salt water for sore throat/cold (US Navy). Speaking of cold, we do not yet have water heaters on our showers, brrr.

3 years ago I almost had the same problems. Because I am retired I needed to open a new personal account in any Thai Bank, as I prefered my monthly retirement money directly from Belgium Gouvernment to a Thai bankaccount. Till then my monthly income was transferred to my Bank in Belgium. But to take money from that Belgian account through my Master Card, it cost me always many fee and the change from Euro's to Thai Bath also costs me too much. Although by direct transfer to a Thai Bank it is cheaper for me. Therefore the Pension Service in Brussels asked me to let fill in a Document which says that they agree that my monthly pension should be transferred to that Thai Bank. I went to Bangkok Bank in Nong Han, where I had already an account, where nobody speaks English, only the Manager. And that woman just said to me and to my wife : they won't fill in that document, because ... they don't know that that Belgian document, written in English, Dutch, French and German ! is really an OFFICIAL DOCUMENT ! So they refused, unbelievable but true. Bangkok Bank didn't want my money hahahaha. So I said bye bye , later on I closed my Bangkok Bank account, and went to another Bank, Krasikorn Bank. There they were very friendly and helpfull, and it wasn't any problem to fill in the official document from the Belgian Pension Service / Gouvernment in Brussels. I could easily open a new personal account, they filled in the document, signed, stamped and dated properly. I sent it to Belgium and 1 month later already my monthly retirement money came on that Krasikorn Bank-account. Since then all is OK. The only thing that bothers me about my income is that it is going down, as the Euro decreases seriously the last months. Today, 3th of Hanuary 2019 the exchange rate is only 36,76 Thai Bath for 1 Euro. That is about 3 bath less than 4 years ago...On a big amount in Thai Bath it is a lot less than 4 years ago that I get for my Euro's. Also the US dollar decreases similar. The Brexit is one of the causes of these decreasements in value.
When you turn 50 you still got to check in every 90 days the retirement visa is for 12 month but you have to report every 90 days unless you have left the country in that time

The US Embassy does not provide translation services. Have a "registered" service translate your US marriage license and then register the document with the MInistry of Foreign Affairs. Once done, go to your local Thai government office to have the marriage legally registered in Thailand. My Thai wife and I married in the US prior to moving to Thailand. We had a marriage ceremony in her village, but didn't register the marriage at the time. That was four years ago. Our US Marriage (and date) is now officially registered in Thailand. Not hard, but several steps.

2019 January. I went into five banks today in Chon Buri province. My Thai fiancé did the talking. Four of the banks wanted a work permit. Bangkok bank told me to go to a different branch-- we did. They told me they wanted a letter from the embassy as well as criminal background check. Pretty much same thing they asked of you. Of course, I'm not married at the moment and just have a 90 day tourist visa. I tried to get my Thai fiancé into United States, but due to new regulations from Trump they denied that as well. Four years ago they approved it. No change in the circumstances. If you think getting a bank account pissed you off, try going through a 16 month long process of getting a K-1 visa, and being denied. Let me tell you it was not cheap. I'm now trying to put a bunch of cash into my fiancé's bank account so that I can get her to come to America part of the time on a tourist visa. Unfortunately, I can't retire permanently in Thailand for about five years, so are doing what we can to make it work. I do enjoy Thailand a lot, but trying to become part of the culture and community here is really difficult. I do speak some Thai, but mostly it's a struggle. Good luck to everyone who would like to make Thailand home. The grass is not always greener. Thailand has its own set of obstacles to overcome.

Bangkok Bank is good about opening accounts for Americans. You should take your Thai GF with you. You need 800K in a Thai bank in order to get the O visa, (retirement visa). I'm living in Phuket now, I'm retired and from California. This video is good, keep making them.
Just be careful opening up a Bank Account in a different city from where you live, if anything happens or goes wrong with your transactions, you have to go back to the original Bank where you opened it up, to resolve any issues
Hey Chuck! I certainly share your frustration in trying to open a bank account in Thailand. I'm in the process of making wedding plans and moving to Thailand. I'm retired & thus no work permit. I just got a tourist visa before leaving Canada & had it extended for 90 days. I need 400,000 baht in a Thai bank account to get an "O" marriage visa but the banks want you to have an O visa before you can open an account. Another bank wants a confirmation letter from your embassy to confirm the picture in your passport is really you. WTF!? The time wasted going from bank to bank until you find someone intelligent enough to see the Catch 22 problem is exhausting. I can foresee going back to the bank with the letter from the embassy, only to have a different person come up with a different rule that he/she just pulls out of a hat. Mind Boggling to say the least.
Next QnA. Short answer if you are still in Thailand with your tourist visa. Get an account at BKK bank in your wife name. Transfer the money in it and when you get your 0 visa in Canada you can open an account in your name and transfer it. OR You can get a 1 yr 0 visa in Canada or a 90day. You will have 1yr or 90days to get an account. TAKE a Deep Breath.... It always works out.
I understand your frustration my wife is thai. But at least Thailand protects its citizens. I pay taxes work hard my kid needed dental surgery. I have insurance and still have to pay out of pocket . Meanwhile if your illegal you work off the books. Bring your kid to a hospital no worries you dont pay a dime . went to Kasikorn bank. first branch said they couldn`t do it as i only had a tourist visa. went to another Kasikorn branch 5 blocks away and got a savings account. they told me i had to buy a 100,000 baht insurance policy [which would cost me 10,000 baht a year for 10 years] because i had a Thai girlfriend, they said this was the only way i could get account. when i got the paperwork sent about the account, in the fine print i had 10 days grace period after receiving the paperwork to cancel the insurance policy. this insurance policy thing was just a scam by the bank and insurance company. Thailand gotta love it, lol

A little late to comment but: visit the web site Thaivisa.com for all the latest details about visas and such. Chuck, you gave what information someone told you but much is incorrect. Marriage extension to your Non-O visa requires only 400,000 baht but it must be in an account in your name only. Also, as to marriage certificate, go to the US embassy and get a declaration from the consulate for your marriage certificate then take it to a translation service that will translate and get Ministry of Foreign Affairs verification stamps. This can take a few days so just have the final product EMS to you.
Kasikorn bank in Pachong would n't open an account for me...In Bangkok i got one in the first Kasikorn i walked into...Just wait til you get a Thai driver License... You have to renew it every second year... Thais dont have to...That made me "Boil"...🙄

A married cert had nothing to do with getting a bank account. Most foreigners here are not married. Immigration requirements for a marriage visa has to be able to read the cert. So a notary and a translation was sufficient, at least 2 years ago when I shared this experience.
Hi Chuck. I know it's a lot easier to say than do, but just try not to get too mad in this kind of situations. They are frustrating like hell, I know, but the reallity is that you will encounter more and more, for sure. Don't expect a Thaï person to simply tell you right away that he/she doesn't' know how to do this or that at work. It's just not in their culture, it's losing face, so they won't do it. At best, you will get a strange face or a discouraging answer, that's it. They won't necessarily learn a lesson either. Just like you said, if you can't get a thing done somewhere, try your luck later or with someone else and the Banking Department appears to be one of the best examples. I try to look at those things from a better angle, I mean back home, when you don't qualify for something and don't meet what's required, there's no way you can get it, no matter how hard/often you try. I think exactly the same, we're on the same page. I've also noticed that as the reason why we leave home and get there is mainly for life and people to give us a break, we're willing to sometimes put more efforts (and philosophy) in order to make it happen, which results in smiling there at situations we wouldn't even tolerate back home.

I opened a bank account with Bangkok Bank, I had to go to the immigration station and just get a document stating that I was there legally. It took me about 30 minutes to get that and then opened the account with no problem.

However thanks from the Obama administration they made it difficult for Americans to obtain an Account because of the information that is required from the bank to report every year to the US government. Common since is why do you need a Bank account in Thailand if you are only a Tourist? I tried three different times before moving here with no luck. That is why I had money in Only my wife name. The bank I had money in told me all I needed was a long stay visa. When I showed back up a year later they said I needed a work permit. When they found out I had LOTs of money there in my wife account, things changed when i told them to put it in the bag. Now, here is my recommendation. Use BKK bank and bring lots of CASH..... good luck.
In 2009 on a visitor visa open account at kasikorn easy, in 2018 I want to take 300,000 out of account, after much to and fro manager explains new rules so iask what if I go to ATM no problem says she. I go to bangkok bank,open account then went home and transferred money from kasikorn no passport easy. How f####d is that
Thai people never will admit that they do not know something, for they will " lose face," if you will. That would be an embarrassment to them .So cut some slack. I feel bad for the employee, they probably got in trouble when you took your money out. On the other hand, I do the same thing when I get mad about something.

You can hire a law office to handle your affairs here cheap. They say you can get a bank statement affidavit notarized at the embassy if having money here is a problem for you.

Make sure you put a POD ( Paid on Death) on your account, and Page needs to put you on her account or the joint account.
Have 2 Charles Schwab debit cards, and no ATM fees and a small interest.

The US Embassy does not provide translation services. Have a "registered" service translate your US marriage license and then register the document with the MInistry of Foreign Affairs. Once done, go to your local Thai government office to have the marriage legally registered in Thailand. My Thai wife and I married in the US prior to moving to Thailand. We had a marriage ceremony in her village, but didn't register the marriage at the time. That was four years ago. Our US Marriage (and date) is now officially registered in Thailand. Not hard, but several steps.

2019 January. I went into five banks today in Chon Buri province. My Thai fiancé did the talking. Four of the banks wanted a work permit. Bangkok bank told me to go to a different branch-- we did. They told me they wanted a letter from the embassy as well as criminal background check. Pretty much same thing they asked of you. Of course, I'm not married at the moment and just have a 90 day tourist visa.
I tried to get my Thai fiancé into United States, but due to new regulations from Trump they denied that as well. Four years ago they approved it. No change in the circumstances. If you think getting a bank account pissed you off, try going through a 16 month long process of getting a K-1 visa, and being denied. Let me tell you it was not cheap.
I'm now trying to put a bunch of cash into my fiancé's bank account so that I can get her to come to America part of the time on a tourist visa. Unfortunately, I can't retire permanently in Thailand for about five years, so are doing what we can to make it work.
I do enjoy Thailand a lot, but trying to become part of the culture and community here is really difficult. I do speak some Thai, but mostly it's a struggle.

Bangkok Bank is good about opening accounts for Americans. You should take your Thai GF with you. You need 800K in a Thai bank in order to get the O visa, (retirement visa). I'm living in Phuket now, I'm retired and from California. This video is good, keep making them.
Just be careful opening up a Bank Account in a different city from where you live, if anything happens or goes wrong with your transactions, you have to go back to the original Bank where you opened it up, to resolve any issues

Hey Chuck! I certainly share your frustration in trying to open a bank account in Thailand. I'm in the process of making wedding plans and moving to Thailand. I'm retired & thus no work permit. I just got a tourist visa before leaving Canada & had it extended for 90 days. I need 400,000 baht in a Thai bank account to get an "O" marriage visa but the banks want you to have an O visa before you can open an account. Another bank wants a confirmation letter from your embassy to confirm the picture in your passport is really you. WTF!? The time wasted going from bank to bank until you find someone intelligent enough to see the Catch 22 problem is exhausting. I can foresee going back to the bank with the letter from the embassy, only to have a different person come up with a different rule that he/she just pulls out of a hat. Mind Boggling to say the least.
Next QnA. Short answer if you are still in Thailand with your tourist visa. Get an account at BKK bank in your wife name. Transfer the money in it and when you get your 0 visa in Canada you can open an account in your name and transfer it. OR You can get a 1 yr 0 visa in Canada or a 90day. You will have 1yr or 90days to get an account. TAKE a Deep Breath.... It always works out.
I understand your frustration my wife is thai. But at least Thailand protects its citizens. I pay taxes work hard my kid needed dental surgery. I have insurance and still have to pay out of pocket . Meanwhile if your illegal you work off the books. Bring your kid to a hospital no worries you dont pay a dime . went to Kasikorn bank. first branch said they couldn`t do it as i only had a tourist visa. went to another Kasikorn branch 5 blocks away and got a savings account. they told me i had to buy a 100,000 baht insurance policy [which would cost me 10,000 baht a year for 10 years] because i had a Thai girlfriend, they said this was the only way i could get account. when i got the paperwork sent about the account, in the fine print i had 10 days grace period after receiving the paperwork to cancel the insurance policy. this insurance policy thing was just a scam by the bank and insurance company. Thailand gotta love it, lol

A little late to comment but: visit the web site Thaivisa.com for all the latest details about visas and such. Chuck, you gave what information someone told you but much is incorrect. Marriage extension to your Non-O visa requires only 400,000 baht but it must be in an account in your name only. Also, as to marriage certificate, go to the US embassy and get a declaration from the consulate for your marriage certificate then take it to a translation service that will translate and get Ministry of Foreign Affairs verification stamps. This can take a few days so just have the final product EMS to you.
Kasikorn bank in Pachong would n't open an account for me...In Bangkok i got one in the first Kasikorn i walked into...Just wait til you get a Thai driver License... You have to renew it every second year... Thais dont have to...That made me "Boil"...🙄

So Chuck, you described how easy it was to get married in Thailand. Why not just go get remarried in Thailand and use that marriage certificate to open a bank account? Enjoy your videos.
A married cert had nothing to do with getting a bank account. Most foreigners here are not married. Immigration requirements for a marriage visa has to be able to read the cert. So a notary and a translation was sufficient, at least 2 years ago when I shared this experience.
Hi Chuck. I know it's a lot easier to say than do, but just try not to get too mad in this kind of situations. They are frustrating like hell, I know, but the reallity is that you will encounter more and more, for sure. Don't expect a Thaï person to simply tell you right away that he/she doesn't' know how to do this or that at work. It's just not in their culture, it's losing face, so they won't do it. At best, you will get a strange face or a discouraging answer, that's it. They won't necessarily learn a lesson either. Just like you said, if you can't get a thing done somewhere, try your luck later or with someone else and the Banking Department appears to be one of the best examples. I try to look at those things from a better angle, I mean back home, when you don't qualify for something and don't meet what's required, there's no way you can get it, no matter how hard/often you try. In Thailand, even if you don't qualify, there's always an option as everything's possible, Lol. Cheers, keep up the good work Dude. Thanks for sharing.

I think exactly the same, we're on the same page. I've also noticed that as the reason why we leave home and get there is mainly for life and people to give us a break, we're willing to sometimes put more efforts (and philosophy) in order to make it happen, which results in smiling there at situations we wouldn't even tolerate back home.

I opened a bank account with Bangkok Bank, I had to go to the immigration station and just get a document stating that I was there legally. It took me about 30 minutes to get that and then opened the account with no problem.
This is why I say, this is my scenario, yours might be different.

Anything is possible in Thailand. You can give a try. However thanks from the Obama administration they made it difficult for Americans to obtain an Account because of the information that is required from the bank to report every year to the US government. Common since is why do you need a Bank account in Thailand if you are only a Tourist? I tried three different times before moving here with no luck. That is why I had money in Only my wife name. The bank I had money in told me all I needed was a long stay visa. When I showed back up a year later they said I needed a work permit. When they found out I had LOTs of money there in my wife account, things changed when i told them to put it in the bag.
Now, here is my recommendation. Use BKK bank and bring lots of CASH..... good luck.

In 2009 on a visitor visa open account at kasikorn easy, in 2018 I want to take 300,000 out of account, after much to and fro manager explains new rules so iask what if I go to ATM no problem says she. I go to bangkok bank,open account then went home and transferred money from kasikorn no passport easy. How f####d is that

Thai people never will admit that they do not know something, for they will " lose face," if you will. That would be an embarrassment to them .So cut some slack. I feel bad for the employee, they probably got in trouble when you took your money out. On the other hand, I do the same thing when I get mad about something.

You can hire a law office to handle your affairs here cheap. They say you can get a bank statement affidavit notarized at the embassy if having money here is a problem for you.
