    Not all 40 min vids are worth watching.But you're video was something exceptional.Something about this made me watch till the end.Then went to my car this morning,started testing out from the top,and found the solution in the relays!Didn't even need to go to coils.Thanks Man!

    My auto mechanical skills are basic.....and my auto A/C skills are much less....but your video has educated me that these systems, while complicated, do have a logic to them.       Hello,I have a 2006 Honda CRV Ex my radiator fan stay on and my AC fan stays on my AC button turns off my fans when I push it. My AC clutch don't turn on

      My running lights do not work after installing a aftermarket sterio in my 2000 Honda Odyssey . I have replaced all the multiplexer, fuses,bulbs and instrument cluster and I need to know what would be the quickest way to get my marker lights to work because I cannot drive at night with no dash lights

    Your video did lead me to check the fuse (20 amp), did not see a relay in box. I did not realize that I could check the fuse without removing it. Replaced the fuse; it blew again as soon as I went to A-C position on switch. Next step- disconnect connector at compressor and check clutch coil for ground/ short in coil. Thank you for this video.

    Paul. The fact that you include us DIY'ers is appreciated. I also understand the importance of having the correct tools. As you know, I'm only into this diagnostics a few months with an old Vantage but the learning continues. Your editing is outstanding.     5:23 shows the position of the A/C clutch relay. No need to hunt down a wiring diagram on the internet to find this. Its the relay with the snowflake symbol at the bottom between the defroster relay and the blower fan relay. Thanks for posting this for us DIYers. Informative and helpful.

      yes! but... he is an instructor and trying to teach proper method without shortcuts...not all relays have that pretty snowflake!(or anything) yea but for us backyard pros this is disturbing!!!

    at the dealer we always replace the relay as well as it is also a common failure item as well, a lot of times the relays stick and leaves the compressor engaged. great video!

    Extremely thorough description of the circuit and troubleshooting methods. You also took the time to explain the use of several tools. People forget that you are a teacher and not just someone making videos to show off your troubleshooting skills. Thanks for that!
    Regarding tools for serious DIYers, I purchased a used Vantage Pro and totally love it. For bi-directional tools and a scanner, I'm planning on buying an Autel Maxidas ds708. The price is dropping all the time and they are currently under $800. Anyone who is interested can watch both of these tools being used by some of the best automotive UA-camrs.

    I could tell the compressor clutch was not engaging, but I had no clue as to why. Your video saved the day. You recommended checking the compressor relay. I took the relay out and on my workbench connected it to a 12 v battery charger. It clicked, but my ohmmeter indicated the contacts were not making. Must have burned out. Anyway, I plugged in a new Chinese made relay, and now I have air galore. Thanks. Very helpful.

    Tip according with PT chart for 90F degrees temp corresponds exactly 104.3 PSIG a little correction for altitude according with place you live here is tip if you have a different number in your on pressure it means you may have air in the system !

    I got a dose of humility today when I forgot that AC pressure switches have a built in hysteresis, closing and opening at different pressures. Of course they are built that way to avoid rapid cycling. The low pressure switch closes when pressure is greater than 49psi, allowing the compressor to turn on if commanded on. When the compressor starts up, low pressure falls, but the low side switch STAYS closed until pressure drops below 18psi, then opening to turn the compressor off. Then it stays open til pressure rises back to 49, turning the compressor back on. Duh! Came back for a refresher dose of ScannerDanner, thanks again.

    Thanks Man, I have watched your film . I have Ford Galaxy 2007 (I live in Poland),. A/C didn't work. I followed your tips. Checked with multimeter the output of body computer, (with relayed detached), then I did short on load terminals in relay nest and A/C worked. So relay broken (24 PLN= 5USD), I saved time and money to go to mechanic.
    One more time - a bog thank to you. You did a good job (specially explaining to be careful with low current relay terminals (not to damage the body computer) and what voltage level on which pin in relay nest) I didn't know that. That all film you did allowed me to systemic / step approach / no chaos. I appreciate it man

    Paul you were very thorough on this repair. My Toyota Corollas' A/C clutch went out 5+ years ago and I know how the system works so I just did it the fast way to make a fast check by just going to the A/C clutch 2 wire connector and checked for power with my multimeter. I had my voltage at the connector and was switching off and on as I turned it on and off so I checked the continuity on the 2 pins on the clutch itself and it was open, so it had a open in the coil. Easy 20 dollar fix for my car and a 30 minute job and it's been working for over 5 years now. Since it was my daily driver, I knew the freon pressure was OK and I just went down to the source of the problem which was the clutch since it wasn't spinning. I was glad it was a easy fix for me but this is my way to diagnose a no A/C clutch. If I didn't have voltage or continuity, then I would work my way back up and do the other testing but I always go down to the source of the problem first.

      I believed at first that I could not get to the clutch coil wiring, so I started at the relay instead and for those who don't have power to the clutch, this video is most useful.

    Incredibly comprehensive, and a very good example of what the real world is like. The real world is why knowing your electrical theory is so important; sometimes you just can't do the typical tests, and you have to get creative to find results!

    Using the load pro at the box would have diagnosed this quick. I know your not a fan of Dan Sullivan but his tool works regardless of who invented the theory of how it works, but regardless love learning as many methods as possible! Great Content as always!

    Paul, great video. FYI...On an RSX I was troubleshooting there is a thermal fuse that is in line between ground and the compressor connector. According to Honda sites, this bi-metallic thermal fuse/switch warps with age leading to an open ground. It mimics a faulty clutch. It is a bear to replace the thermal switch since it is a bolt on component toward the block side of the compressor. The Acura blogs recommend bypassing the thermal switch to fully validate a faulty magnetic coil. I appreciate your excellent videos, and your commitment to high quality.

    Great video showing how to test any system from the relay, Where I live let a garage repair your car is expensive and they mostly change parts so I buy tools instead of paying garage for a poor job the tools save money in the long run.
    Then I have been using the tools and help friends for free and for me I get to learn in the real world what I have learned from your great teaching Danner keep up your extremely good work.

    Gotta laugh when people comment saying if they were diagnosing it, they'd just check power at the clutch and be done in 5 mins. It's easy when you know what the problem is.

    Thank you for all your hard work, when I checked my compressor from top it's hard to see the compressor , you did awesome job to show us the wires going on compressor awesome job, I will try to tap the compressor clutch before ordering new one, if I am ordering the new one then I might hammer it as well

    Great video. Just had the same problem with my 2015 Honda CR-V. Just swapped the relay with the horn relay. Problem solved. I live in the south. We don't drive with our horns down here. Horn still works. I will pick up a new relay online for cheap on my schedule, not my cars. Thanks for the video.

      @@ScannerDanner My car i20 engine is running very quiet as usual. However, as soon as AC clutch is engaged, I hear a squeak sounds and not metallic sounds or alike. The squeezing like sounds go away immediately as AC is off. Even with engine revs, same sounds. And with AC off, as I revs the engine, still the engine is quiet. How to find that squeaky like sounds and fix it?
      The AC is blowing cold. It seems the AC compressor is ok.

    Great video. But, one thing you missed - these compresors have thermal protector and it's located on the compressor housing. 12V from relay goes to thermal protector first and than to clutch coil. The thermal protector will have no continuity above 122 to 132°C (252 to 270°F). When the temperature drops below 116 to 104°C (241 to 219°F), the thermal protector will have continuity. However, if protector goes bad and always open, symptoms would be axactly as yours, having no current flow and suggesting open clutch coil. Field Coil Resistance on this compressors is: 3.05-3.35 ohms at 20°C (68°F). So to be 100% sure at your final conclusion, you should do your bulb test on wire after thermal fuse before it enters coil. Cheers!

    Great video! The ground test at 37:45 would normally be done at the plug mounted on the A/c compressor, There is an exception on this style compressor because there was no plug at the compressor the plug was at the rad and the ground was bolted to the compressor housing. The reason why you would want to do this style ground test at the plug is there could be no connection due to a bent pin on the plug. The plug could have been damaged during another repair.

    I just did this exact same bidirectional testing of the clutch relay with my $200 XTOOL a30M blue tooth scanner. It’s the best compromise of pro level functionality and affordability for a DIYer like me. And I tried several scanners before settling on this one.

    On Hondas if the cooling fans are running when the AC is switched on, the PCM is receiving the necessary inputs to command the compressor on. Just another quick Check to complement your rpm increase when pressing the AC button. Love the videos!

    I just bought a Vpecker scantool with bidirectional controls for about $130 US! I have only tested it on a couple of cars so far but am very impressed with what I have seen. This would be a great one for paul or perhaps motoyam to review.

      Yes... and I have been too scared to look up what the V stands for. Seriously though, it seems to be a whole lot of tool for very little money and from what I can see the software updates are free!

      Oh and I got it off ebay if you want to check them out. You should also check out the "Mooshimeter" (seriously I am not making this stuff up) it's a two channel bluetooth graphing multimeter. Made in Murica and great for beginners on a budget but also for advanced techs working without a helper or to tape under the bonnet (hood for you Muricans) and monitor remotely or log data. I use mine all the time.

      Does Vpecker work on any Windows laptop? Is it really all in one tool i.e. can you work on TPMS, ABS, SRC etc?

      I am running windows 10, I think you can run it on anything up to as old as Windows xp, but check out the product info first. It seems to do all modules except TPMS (although I haven't actually tried it on anything with TPMS yet). So far it's the most comprehensive scanner I have seen for the price by a long shot, but as above I haven't tried it on very many cars yet, so I am cautiously optimistic, but a case of so far so good for me. It would pay to buy a cheap OBD extension cable to go with it as the unit is a bit bulky being cordless and this sometimes gets in the way of surrounding trim etc. Hope that helps.

    Mine is in a tight place, took me hours to get the snap rings off. Used a little husky hook and screwdriver. The $40 adjustable pliers with the different end pieces are good for putting the rings back on because you can put the tool in the holes of the ring. But now I'm doing it again, and they have too much play to get the rings off. Going to Harbor freight to get the 4pc set, hopefully they work better. Literally 2 snap rings are ruining my life. I know someone else can do this in an hour. Hardest of the 12-15 repairs I have done myself are these snap rings behind the radiator. I don't even care about the a/c I just want that belt on so my truck can run.
    I appreciate you helping us with this, I don't need to spend $2000 to get the A/C recharged, I just need the clutch replaced.

    great video don't forget Honda loves to use a thermal fuse mounted to the body of the compressor wich is a common failure some times they put it in series with the compressor clutch or as a input to the ecm great vid

    Hindsight’s 20/20, but the cover you removed to see the fuses also shows that the middle relay is the AC relay. The cover depicts the snowflake on that particular relay.

    Awesome video, I've been having trouble with my compressor clutch switch and been needing to replace it when I find time but what I would do is unplug and replug it repeatedly and wiggle until it finally kicked the A/C on. I then saw what you said about tapping it (which is probably common sense that I simply missed) so I decided I'd go give that a shot real quick and low and behold it did. I drive a lot and it'll be saving time by taking like 5 seconds as opposed to 10 or so minutes lol.

    Nice job on teaching and complete diagnosis on the ac complaint. That,s what YOU do for us, you teach and explain. I learned from you at least 5 reasons why a clutch will not engage. ( low pressure, ac control switch, fuse, relay and faulty clutch.) That,s what teachers do. Your videos are the best... also could you tell us what brand tool you used to pierce the hot wire.     I love that those manifold gauges still work being from circa 1772. Pascal used these to determine some of his equations. lol kidding paul.

    People saying 40 mins for this, Just remember Paul would have been done in under 10 mins if he wasn't going through the process of what and why so that no matter what your ability you should get a good under standing of the system and how it works. Who would watch a 5 min video of someone just changing parts? Come on you guys

      @@ScannerDanner My car i20 engine is running very quiet as usual. However, as soon as AC clutch is engaged, I hear a squeak sounds and not metallic sounds or alike. The squeezing like sounds go away immediately as AC is off. Even with engine revs, same sounds. And with AC off, as I revs the engine, still the engine is quiet. How to find that squeaky like sounds and fix it?
      The AC is blowing cold. It seems the AC compressor is ok.

      @@tnamen1307 check your belt (tension and for cracks), the AC compressor creates a HUGE drag on the belt when it is engaged

    You're correct about yhe higher end scan tools becoming more affordable. I just picked up a Modis for $400. As you know, it's an all in one...component tests and locations guide, scanner, and 4 channel lab scope. Updated to 2012 and included german vehicles.

    Awesome video, great detail. I came here because our 2005 Honda accord Euro ( here in NZ ) aircon clutch would not engage.
    I found the relay and swapped it over with another one from the relay box. The two relays were identical with markings 7001. Haven't a clue what the 2nd did but when swapped over and the clutch engaged. Because im a tight ass and don't want to spend $$ on another relay I used a current limiting power supply and wired the contacts across the coil. This caused the relay to chatter when power was applied and thus cleaned the contacts. Presto it works again. Al least I know if it stops again I can buy a new relay. Job sorted. Cheers to you Paul.

    A variable could be, if you weren't able to tap it into operation, is a thermal switch some manufacturers like to use including Honda.

    Wow, I did not know you taught AC. That's awesome. I live in Arizona where ac is almost a necessity in the summer. I love learning about automotive AC. Please do share your knowledge on AC. Be it on here, your premium channel or another book.

    Great video ScannerDanner. You enlightened me regarding the technology integrated into the system. Daughter's 06 Civic A/C Comp clutch not engaging. Verified good fuse, applicable relay (swap with another identical relay), good connections, tapped the clutch as noted in other videos, and finally verified approx 12 volts to clutch connection. Double checked everything (including line pressure). As a final step, I even tried Russ Kessler's method (it's acceptable in this case). Clutch still didn't engage despite tapping and fans running. I've come to the conclusion the clutch is shot. Unfortunately I don't have sophisticated equipment as you've demonstrated, but at least I've done what I could with the tools on hand (basic hand tools & a DMM. Again, you're explanations/reasoning is stellar.
    The vehicle has about 140K miles. Any idea how long the service life for these clutches are? After googling this complaint, it doesn't appear to be that uncommon.

    i had a honda tech (Retired) replace the ac clutch in my son's Odyssey without removing the compressor. I'd love to know how he did it, because my wife's compressor clutch just went bad. Oh yeah, great video.

    Hey Paul.
    You know I have been a big fan of yours for years now and i push your channel to many workshops i visit here in Australia for the shop owners/mechanics to learn more about diagnosing. Especially with scan tools as in my experience few know little about them being anything more than a code reader and if they did look at live data they would not know what to look for. When i get asked where can you learn this stuff i tell them to enrol in night classes or better still subscribe to your channel and get your book.
    So thats that part.
    For this though, the one thing that led me to follow your channel was speed and direction. You mentioned early in your videos how you hate flow charts. They make you do this and do that and waste valuable time diagnosing a fault. In this video i felt it was almost like following a flow chart. I think the best place to go would have been straight to the clutch to check power and ground and if they failed then go back to relays . I dont even think hooking up guages was required as you could have confirmed system presure was there by checking the tx valve presure switch. Had this been an instructional video on how to check AC electrical circuits it was a great video but it was a fault finding exercise and going straight to the end of the circuit would have told you everything.
    Hope my critisism is constructive.
    Still a huge fan.

      Step 1. Check system pressures (always)
      Step 2. Check for power to clutch (couldn't get to compressor connector)
      You can switch up 1 and 2 but most of the time you'll be going back to the gauges anyway.
      So you find that you can't get to the clutch. You're in a gravel parking lot, with no wiring diagram or knowledge of the circuit your working on. What do you do?
      That's a rhetorical question. It's why I picked the direction I did. I systematically eliminated all possibilities before finally getting the van inside and up on the rack to check the clutch itself.

      Remember I'm usually in a parking lot and getting to the AC compressor clutch wiring is not the easiest first step

    Something people overlook is the compressor wont engage on many model/year vehicles if the pressure is too low. I ran into this issue the other day. Compressor fan was bad, blowing hot, etc. Checked all relays, replaced fan, compressor wont engage. It was 5psi low, added a drible left in the can and everything took off like it should.

    I just recently bought the ethos pro from snap on. it was like 1500 bucks. has bidirectional testing. does everything the modus, and verus does minus lab scope and troubleshooter. really great tool and have diagnosed several cars with it just using data pids and some basic principles I learned from you

    I use the Lexia3 cable with the Peugeot Planet software for my Peugeot (plugged into my laptop), works for Citroens too. Cost about €60 on ebay, and it has all the diagnostics, manual activation of components, live graph readings, reprogram keys etc. Best €60 I ever spent.

    Thanks Mr Danner, Harbor Freight has a Bi-Directional Scan Tool for about $1,100 that does AC controls and programs keys too. If u have the money it's worth it in my opinion.
