Almost completely submerged underground, this once dark and congested storage space was gutted by SOUTH architecture and transformed into a bright, comfortable and fully equipped studio apartment. The addition of a sculptural partition wall allowed SOUTH to create distinct functional living areas whilst also enhancing the flow of natural light throughout. The clever inclusion of an arched circular opening between the living room and bedroom doubles as both a desk and vanity, while unique, custom-designed furniture in the living room, bedroom and kitchen further defines the spaces and adds to their functionality.

This is a great example of aesthetics taking precedent over usability.
Totally agree. They added in such thick walls. The curved walls look beautiful. But they could have built-in storage. The kitchen in a great example of the thick curved walls looking beautiful, but blocking off useful space that could have been used for storage.

yes aesthetic and being minimalistic is great but this is a weekend home at best.
Since the apartment is part of the basement I think that the walls are just thick because load-bearing. Greece has strong earthquakes and the structure is for sure built to withstand them.
@@0c0p0c0 Apologies for being unclear. I meant the curve to the left of the kitchen (above the cooktop and sink). Not the curve to the right (that houses the shower)
It looks amazing. Personally would prefer a bit more kitchen worktop than the big plant.

yeah i think that plant would be better in the massive courtyard anyway. and some counterspace could be added in its place

As a landscape architect, I would have loved to see the courtyard. Even if it wasn't part of the design brief, I think seeing that space and the relationship it has with the indoor space and its functions is important.
Great project though. Add a couch and more counter space in the kitchen and it would be perfect.
The watermelon just hanging out in the corner of the room and pears strewn on the chair were a bit much though...
Finally- and people ask this on every single one of your videos-when will the costs of the projects be included? Not being transparent with costs associated with architects, construction and the rest just contributes to the elitism of such remodels. If, as every architect/designer says in their video that "we should make this more common as it's necessary for our densifying cities", then do your part to make this more accessible by educating people about the costs and inner workings of these projects.

It think it's closed up space with windows all round it. I don't know how apartment like this can exist with fire codes.
Honestly, I think they could have done much better, I like the colours and the layout, but why is a third of the kitchen lost to a tree, and why is there no storage space, no built-in furniture. In a tiny home, it is essential that the appliances are multi-use so that space can transform to adapt to different settings.
Yes! Especially when in-built storage space is a quintessential part of greek apartments.
Totally with you. This is perhaps not one of the better projects on this channel. Pretty sure the tree is where the fridge will eventually go though ;)
That plant is not part of the design. This is where they would put in the fridge.

I really like the atmosphere and several of the design features (I love the curves and arches throughout), but they haven't made the most of the space at all. I hope they'll find a fridge that can fit in that kitchen gap instead of the huge plant. And it could definitely use a sofa and a few more shelves! Even just a couple of shelves within the bathroom cupboard would be an improvement!
I assumed that no one has moved in permanently yet? It looks like there's plenty of space for a sofa/a few shelves and maybe even a small table to fit in the kitchen gap as more counter space
I'm forcing myself to believe the client had not yet moved into this Space when they shoot this episode. It's Just a void
They often shoot before the client move in... It's probably the case here. The cupboard has 3 hanging clothes that looks like the one the architect is wearing 😅
i think it just showed the architectural details more clearly. however i also loved the messy library space that it was before..just so much character.

One thing that gets me mad it's the argument of Making tiny spaces on behalf of affordable housing when in fact after you buy this Kind of property you have to spend a shit ton of money with an architect to make it barely livable

i don't remember a single one of these designs being financially available to regular first time buyers. they're neat architectionally speaking, but not really so much in terms of actually providing tips for those who can't afford a larger space
Agreed. If I had the money needed for this drastic transformation, I wouldn’t live in a basement apartment! Maybe it was converted for short term rental.
They missed an opportunity to make a circular murphy dining table out of the desk that also doubles as a privacy screen!

its an empty space...its meant for the person moving in to put their furniture in. its like saying "im not gonna live in this empty flat" when going flat hunting. if you want all the furniture and appliances to be there before living there, then thats Airbnb niche
I’m disappointed in this project. The curved/circular elements are fun conceptually, but how much space was lost by introducing them? The large mirrors in the bedroom are not feng shui friendly. From what I can see overall, effective storage opportunities are missed. And no fridge? I feel the vision is incomplete and limited - would the intended demographic really enjoy this space?
@@voxelemur ah well we cant do anything about that except imagine the warmth and furniture we'd like, no? Maybe they had technical difficulties with renting furniture behind the scenes. Who is to say? Ite only that im not complaining with being presented with an almost empty space because thats how it is. Even tho I'd like it if they had made it feel more livable rather than gallery like
It was a challenging space because of the lack of windows, but the kitchen should have been much larger. It should be possible to isolate the bedroom from the living space if someone is sleeping while another is up and active. The skylights opening into a garage may prove to be a mixed blessing.
As it becomes increasingly more expensive for young people to find a first home in the cities, the need for small affordable accommodations is vital. It therefor saddens me that we see so many small apartments that are being joined to create bigger living spaces thereby reducing that total number of available units. Seeing out of the box thinking like this warms my heart. Love it!
On one side yes, on the other side, such spaces are not aimed to be rented to young people considering such an appartment would go for crazy prices, or even airBnB
All I need is a tiny studio apartment and there are almost none in America. New York City has some, but even those tend to have a fill oven/stove, but I don't need that. The world needs far, far more studios with kitchenettes....2 burners, not 4, a microwave oven, not a full oven. And, the walls, ceilings, and floors need far better insulation for noise-proofing. If we don't work on this *now*, overcrowding will cause more and more people do lose their minds and take it out on others.

In Mexico City the opposite is happening. New apartments are much smaller, no courtyard, and probably no balcony unless it is a luxury apartment which you can't afford anyway. Old apartments are being divided up to rent out the rooms for what used to be the cost to rent an entire apartment. No, still not affordable young or not young.
@@ChristopherJohnsonArtist This is partly the consequence of people having too many kids. My great granddad had between 13 and 17 kids and my own dad had 4 kids, so this isn't an attack against one group or another.
I wish those tiny apartments offered sliding glass windows, though, for air flow, light, and scenery. No balcony needed - just a railing on the bottom half. There are a few buildings in New York City that do that and it almost as good as a balcony.
The circular opening as a table on the wall is such a nice small touch.
It’s incredible how we as architects forget that spaces are meant to be used by someone. Looks like a gallery of design decisions, rather than a whole living unit.

To be honest,i respect the architects' work,but ,personally speaking, it's not one of my favourite projects shown at your channel.
It's aesthetically very pleasing but a bit "style over substance" for my personal taste.
This looks so different from what we usually see in this channel, because the design elements are very Greek. Love the blue tiles.

It's very greek in the sense that the place had great potential but they chose to go with this space-wasting and impractical design instead.

Seems like a massive space that’s not being used very well, normally these places are clever but this just seems empty/half finished
It's too minimal in my opinion, nice space, but not much functional. Also, it isn't too small, the kitchen could've taken more space and made more functional.
I had a 1 bedroom apt with a full size kitchen - the apt was the same size.
i love some elements of it, but at the same time it's too un-homey. the bedroom skylight would scare me bcs what if you're trying to sleep and then you see someone on your ceiling
its a really foggy glass for that to happen

to all the people commenting that they are missing stuff - this is clearly an apartment that is being sold and there is simply no furniture as the buyer will be able to bring their own... The plant is a placeholder for fridge, there is space for a sofa.. I do not understand how hard is this to grasp :D Look at the space, not what you are personally missing ffs...
To add to that most people in big cities don't cook very often but there is also the option to add a small moveable island for extra work space.
I understand what you’re saying, but this channel usually showcases furnishings and storage for small spaces along with the floor plan, and it’s already inhabited. The staged furniture in this video sent a mixed message, hence the criticisms and/or confusion. If they just wanted to present the redesigned layout of the apartment, I think the kind of people that follow this channel don’t need the staged furnishings to understand how the rooms could be used.

Why criticize when there is obviously space for more furniture... I just do not understand people having the need to express that THEY PERSONALLY need more of something.. well buddy, good thing you are not the owner of this space then or you just have zero imagination to see all that potentially being in the space.
Also what if someone wants to live this way - with just one chair? ;)
Excactly! There is clearly space for fridge/couch/dining table/TV and so on, which a client could add to their personal taste.
@@Petra-PI must have said it badly - what I meant to express is that they don’t need to stage furnishings for us to enjoy or understand an architect’s design. If some of the people viewing this video were confused by the staged furniture, and stuff like a jumble of cleaning supplies in a storage cabinet, I think(?) it’s because this channel usually shows us spaces that are already in use.

It’s a beautiful space. Love the bathroom - the blue tile shower is fabulous, and the bathroom layout is just as it should be (i.e., the toilet is out of the way of the shower). I can see where you’d put living room furniture and a dining table. My only issue would be storage throughout. I personally would have designed more kitchen cabinets in and a frig, more countertop space for food prep (the pullout is too small), more shelving in the living room, and more drawers and closet space in that beautiful custom piece in the bedroom - oh, and a vanity under the bathroom sink. Also a divider between the water heater and shelf space next to it. Storage always seems to be a low priority in these designs, but you can’t live without it.
This is a real stand-out to me. Feeling flooded in excellent design these days yet this one truly captured the strengths of the existing with the creative licence of the functional and aesthetic needs for now. I loved it.
I really like the renovations and the design but I feel they didnt do the kitchen properly, they had space and still, the kitchen is way too small. Besides that, they did an amazing job specially with the lighting. I would never have imagined that this aparment is beneath the ground and that's amazing.
Exactly, I don't think the plant in the right was necessary, it only stole space from the kitchen..
It looks great, but a recurring issue with small space design is skimpy kitchens. Why skimp on the kitchen!
I agree!!! There's no need of a large living room, or a large courtyard, since you're going to be siting or laying down at these spaces. But in the kitchen you'll work, standing and moving around... It's nice to have a large and comfortable area to work.
I agree on that, but I believe most of this clients surely do not cook or care about the kitchen, many young people eat outside or order food, so I cannot criticized that on the design because they said they do the spaces based on the clients needs. Definitely if I was a client I would ask for a better kitchen ^_^
I would gladly trade off that oven for more countertop space.

Without the courtyard, the apartment would feel so bland. The contrast is what makes this one.
I've ordered the new Never Too Small book and it arrived today! I have collected a lot of architecture books over the years and I am very fussy about the quality of them. The Never Too Small book is simply beautiful and well worth adding to any architecture library. It is a book that I know I will refer to over and over again - both for reference purposes and also pure interest and entertainment purposes. The photographs are abundant and of high quality and they also include very clear floor plans for every dwelling (including an incredibly convenient section at the very back just showing all of the floor plans next to each other). I do not know the authors or the curators of this channel and nor am I sponsored. I'm simply a very impressed customer. Do yourselves a favour and grab a copy!
If you compare it to before it's just wow! Still: where to sit? 😄 On that one chair? And often if they have one opening they put the kitchen there. Why not the living room? Love the colours of the bathroom and the concrete steps in the living area and bedroom ❤️ Maybe it's more an Airbnb than a real living space.

The reason it's on the floor is probably because they couldn't fit a fridge in the tiny space they alotted for it for the melon to go in 😂

Very clever design , the kitchen is beautiful, and the design fits the climatic atmosphere of Greece , it feels spacious and clean considering only one window.
So far, my top 3 favorite designs have all been Greek designers! Love the approach! Character, style, keeeping it interesting and unique!

The nook right next to the oven where that tree is. I was really confused why they didn’t stretch the countertop over. That said, it still would have been better to stretch the countertop over and just have a minifridge.

Curved walls invokes calm and luxury
Whenever I see an interior the is mostly bright white along with yellowish/golden tones, I feel like it looks very heavenly - kind of ethereal and elevated. Gives me a peaceful feeling.
I also liked the blue shower tiles and the blue in some art for contrast. If I were living there I would like a small yellow couch in some beautiful high end material and maybe a royal blue throw on it. I would also want a table large enough for six people to have guests over for dinner.
I’ve watched all of the episodes of Never too small but I must say that this was the most underwhelming of them all. There was hardly anything in the space to see and admire. And the bedroom space was not shown at all. I’m presuming that this project is still work in progress. Or to be finished by whoever occupies the space.
Although, I think the bedroom space was shown, I couldn't agree more to "underwhelming". Wouldn't consider living there.
As someone who has also watched every episode the worst one for me has to be the dorm episode, yikes💀

They did an amazing job when you consider what was there before. Loved the clean lines and minimalistic feel. If it wasn't for the outdoor space I would find it hard to live there as it would feel too cavernous. Unless there were some constraints for not being able to do so, I would prefer to have had the living room be closest to the outdoor space where there is light seeing as that is where most people spend their time rather than the kitchen. Then one could leave the sliding doors to the outdoor space open creating an extension of the entertaining space. And I also would've enclosed the bedroom for privacy. I don't mind a darker bedroom since that is where I am sleeping. Plus, it did have a skylight so it wasn't entirely dark. And now with a closed off wall, you could make a larger 'L' shaped kitchen on that side since you have the perpendicular wall to add more cabinet/counter space, and maybe even fit a small dining table.
This is such a gorgeous home. I could see myself living. Also, the curved shower wall OMGGG!!! beautiful

I love the vibe of this space very calming and peaceful. There needs to be some minor adjustments for each individual if they were to live there just like any other house. I love the shape of this space, it feels soft and light.

These tiny houses are so small that you need to be a very delicate person to live there without knocking anything off.

I suffer from claustrophobia and I never tought this apt was under the ground, I would liked to see the little garden area specting to see there a fire ladder. That bathroom is a dream come true for me, the blue tile is simply adorable.
Amazing! The before pictures were some of the darkest I ever saw. To see how light and livable the final result is is amazing. Obviously nobody was living here yet, it would be fun to have a follow up with clever furniture use and design e.g. to create more workspace in the kitchen and to connect to the atrium. But what a great layout. The arches and curves are beautiful.
My only concern would be the plywood in wet areas, that may start looking bad quite fast.

iThink there was so much missed opportunity to make this even better than it currently is. Great design and whatnot, but the space could've been more maximized. Not with stuff, but with more features, concepts and ideas.

Beautiful project! Some toughs, though:
1. I would like to have sliding panels on the ceiling, for closing these skylights
2. Definitely, it's a very very small kitchen, I would prefer to have a larger separated ambient, with a larger counter
3. I see a lot of people complaining about the couch: well, if you like it, then buy one and put in there. For me, it's much more pleasant to have a tatami or something like this on the living room floor
Placing the bedroom right next to the entrance and directly under the skylight that leads to the street was A CHOICE.

So funny reading some of the comments! The plant is clearly an opening for a fridge. I agree the kitchen is tiny but note that the architects referred to it as a kitchenette so perhaps it was a specific client request to not waste space on a large kitchen. Nice project given it's difficult subterranean location.

Very interesting and unusual apartment, but however I would have preferred more bench space instead of the large pot plant, in the kitchen area. If one likes to cook, then you need all the bench space you can get.
The wardrobe, brilliant. Being able to use the top of the wardrobe as an additional shelf is a lovely touch

Nice apartment, given the location mainly underground. Would make a pleasant pied a terre. I find it amusing that the one place to sit is one of the most uncomfortable chairs ever designed. The only chair worse I can think of was designed by Mario Botta. 😉

That's a great design, with a small round kitchen table working also as Extra kitchen space it will be perfect for a student or even a single working person. However the wardrobe in the bedroom could have been created to reach the ceiling for extra storage and the TV/ bookcase in the living room could have also been raised up to the ceiling also for extra storage 😊 I'd also add a two seated sofa- bed or maybe two comfortable armchairs and a tiny minimal round table between them just to make it a bit cosier! For a basement apartment it surely looks very cool!!!

I love the use of plywood and the simplicity of cabinets and other storage and the use of curves and light, but I would be very frustrated with that kitchenette. The sink is too small for cleaning pots and you really need some surface with a work space. Even one square meter of work space would make the kitchen one you'd want to use. That pull out might be ok for placing a sandwich, but I wouldn't dare try to put a blender there or chop something on it. I currently live in an apartment with a 2.5 by 2.5 kitchen with a bigger sink and a little peninsula and it is barely usable.

Oh, finally some Greek Architects! Although it's a small basement apartment, it will be expensive cause of the area.
