I always thought it was weird that there’s an expression “to drop the ball” which essentially means to screw up or to let someone down, and yet that’s the action NYC chooses to mark the beginning of a new year.

One minor correction: The Naval Observatory where the VP lives is actually in DC just north of Georgetown. I think Tom was thinking of the Naval Academy in Annapolis MD (which is only like 30 miles from DC).
