For those who don't know.... the album has a self mocking element. The song is a poke in the ribs to rock music, solos, screaming lyrics, detunimg the bass.....
Yeah! Love this song! You got to hear Long John Baldry, a very good singer, friend of Elton John and Rod Stewart, and was voice of Dr. Robotinik. A good start: 'Conditional Discharge / Don't Try to Lay No Boogie-Woogie on the King of Rock and Roll'.
For a lot of people the video in their head for this song will be a scene from Goodfellas. And it was used well to match that manic scene. Definitely a song about obsession.
Wow ha, I liked it, especially the way the bass rose and then fell, he seemed to play with it, I also like the vocals and their slight echo effects, I was amazed by the drummer, he just didn’t turn off, played at the same tempo, amazing! I'll add this to my playlist!
Sunday - May 11th, 1980 - 6:55 am This song starts as Henry is having his morning coke, grabs the bag of guns & silencers and heads over to Jimmy's in his Cadillac with a helicopter overhead.
A great full album listen would be Nilssons The Point. It's a childrens story done in narrative and song and well worth the listen. Gotta love Herbie Flowers on that bass in this one.
"I wanted to be a spaceman That's what I wanted to be But now that I am a spaceman Nobody cares about me! Hey mother Earth won't you bring me back down safely to the Sea" - Harry Nilsson. P.S. I can't recommend LCD Sound System's awesome cover of Jump Into The Fire enough!
This is why I dig Harry, he can swoon a goose with his mournful love songs and leap into a goofy wailing rock song next. You never know what chocolate interior you’re gonna get. Those who bemoan the length of the tune, the quality of his voice in this, the monotonous riff… I love it. To each his her their own. Just let me enjoy it.
Herbie Flowers, the bass player is really the star of this one. Everyone is really. Such a fantastic track. Nilsson Schmilsson front to back is a wonderful listen.
A great song-credited to Harry Nilsson, which wasn't often the case. Fantastic! Richard Perry was the brains behind the idea. - Harry did it, but Perry made it sound so great, not to diminish Harry's input one wit!
Did not recognize this tune until the lyrics. I remember thinking, ok groove started, I'll stay with it a little while. Then the 💡turns on. This tune! This is a great tune! You're 2 for 3 so far today Justin. I'll look at the 3rd one next.
I'm pretty sure this song is burned into my DNA at this point. I vote you hit "Spaceman" next, or "Coconut" if you want one there's an off chance you've heard before. (And you should watch The Point on your own time. Lovely story, great music, acid-trip animation. XD)
My take on the lyrics and their delivery: This is a dude obsessed and desperate and screaming (each time more unhinged than the last) to try and convince somebody that WE CAN MAKE EACH OTHER HAPPY... AHHHHHHHH
i'm learning a lot from listening to this. You say build up, i say repetition. Monotony. I loved Field Music from 2017 til 2021. This reminds me of them . I get bored with the lack of , variety. That's why Prog Rock is so appealing. Fab Drum Break here. I took it too. That came on cue as I was just about to Label This One OK. It's now OK +. It needs more Foghat. Or BÖC. AND NOW THAT'S WHAT IT'S GIVIN ME. Oh Hippo, you're a Sage. great fun 4 me Ta JP. Chairs!
His 1967 album Pandemonium Shadow Show is to my mind a must listen. It is said that John Lennon called Harry Nilsson in Los Angeles to congratulate him on the album. I don't know if that's true but it might make you curious to listen to the album. Have a great day JP. Stay healthy.
Herbie Flowers (recently turned 86) plays bass on a few tracks from the album, including this track. Justin, you’ve already heard Herbie with the band Sky. You recently reviewed their track “Toccata.” Time to revisit Sky! “Hotta” and “Vivaldi” are standouts from Sky 2. But any track will do.
Definitely a reaction to the climate of 70-71. The Peace and Love generation had been eclipsed by assassinations and riots of 1968 and 1969, many of those riots taking place on earth the very same days that humans were "climbing the mountain" as in journeying to the moon. "We Can Make Each Other Happy" was a prayer unanswered as the decade turned while Partridges singing "C'mon Get Happy" was just a distraction. The only thing that quelled the fire was 1972, when Gasoline became a more expensive combustible.
I worked cheaply for my Dad at a gas station in that time period when there was no gas and when there was, a line till it was gone. This is when we pumped gas for you. Only perk was pumping gas and wash the windshield for beautiful ladies… this was high school ya see.
Clearly two chords. The I and IV of whatever key the song is in. Still very impressive. Never changes. Maybe one progression of switching between those two chords for the entirety of the song. BTW, one of my very favorite songs. But I do have a lot of favorites….
I've only heard the single version before this, much prefer that one. The drum & bass solos are a waste of time. Klaus Voorman worked on John Lennon's "Plastic Ono Band" album.
1983 the drummer Jim Gordon attacked his 71 year old mother with a hammer, then fatally stabbed her with a butcher knife. He was sentenced to 16 years to life in prison. He died in prison in 2023
This song is inextricably linked with the "May 11 1980" sequence in GoofFellas, where a strung out Henry Hill goes about his routine whilst being stalked by a black helicopter. As a recovering addict, I've never seen black helicopters following me (just shadow people), but I definitely relate to that level of paranoia, and it makes it very hard to watch that sequence or listen to this track since getting clean, because this is very much the internal soundtrack of a person so coked out they are inevitably going to crash and consider it a mercy. Still, a great track from Nilsson. Highly recommend Gotta Get Up from the same album.
The basic tune wasn't too bad, repetitive, but this was far too long for what it was. Worse though, the terrible vocals... The delivery, cadence, it was more raucous screaming than singing, put me on edge like nails on a blackboard. Nope, really didn't like this in the slightest.
That guy destroying the drums is the late, tragic Jim Gordon.
Awesome song....used often in movies. Most famously in "Goodfellas" perfectly enhancing the 'paranoid cocaine use' scene.
Back in the day when you bought 45's, the flip side was "The Moonbeam Song"
For those who don't know.... the album has a self mocking element. The song is a poke in the ribs to rock music, solos, screaming lyrics, detunimg the bass.....
appreciated...thanks
There's not much to this song,....yet there's SO MUCH TO IT! How??????
Helicopter scene in Goodfellas
helicopters, meatballs, guns, lucky hat 🔥
That was the beauty and talent of Harry. He can reduce you to tears with a ballad and ignite you with this energetic gem.
The bass and drums are the STAR Of this show.
Banging good record.I used to shake my bedroom walls, and burn on ever higher. Playing and shaking as I "Jump Into the Fire"!🔥&❤.

This song appeared in Goodfellas.
It’s used to great effect, too!
LCD Sound System do a great cover of this. You should check them out.
I did not know that. I'll have to give it a listen. Tripping Daisy also did - I believe for the movie The Craft.
Ty Segall does a great cover too.
I just saw them live and they busted this out. The crowd had no idea what to do with themselves, but I was losing my dang mind.
that drum solo was really fantastic!

I know very little of Nilsson, but wasn't expecting this rock at all. Good surprise!
A great full album listen would be Nilssons The Point. It's a childrens story done in narrative and song and well worth the listen. Gotta love Herbie Flowers on that bass in this one.
Ringo narrated the VHS, DVD and Blu-ray.

This one had a Joe Jackson style to it way before Joe Jackson. Hard to believe this was 1971. Harry was ahead of his time.
This album is exceptional. 🙂
Hey Justin! Happy Sunday!! A total banger from Harry. My brother used to shake the house playing this decades ago!!🎵🎼🎶🔈🔉🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊👍😎
Herbie Flowers, the bass player is really the star of this one. Everyone is really. Such a fantastic track. Nilsson Schmilsson front to back is a wonderful listen.
great tune...it's in the film 'goodfellas' btw
Best version of this shows up in the Dracula movie Nilsson made with Ringo Starr.

His coolest song. We have the same robe, I see. Robes don't cut your body in half.
Mornin'!

the timed echo was excellent
Harry does rock!
_Nilsson Sings Newman_ is one of my many DIDs.
Dearly Invested Discs? I'm daft in the dark here! I'd love JP to play Christmas in Capetown. It's a heatwave today...
Desert Island Disc, 'sall.

LCD Soundsystem do a great live cover of this.
One chord throughout the entire song. ❤

Me and My Arrow.
Herbie Flowers on Bass. Going Lowww.
Can’t listen to this without wanting to watch the movie Goodfella’s
Any excuse to re-watch "Goodfellas" is just fine with me! ;-]
Like like...😁
I've only heard the single version before this, much prefer that one. The drum & bass solos are a waste of time. Klaus Voorman worked on John Lennon's "Plastic Ono Band" album.
This song is so cool it knocked off Metallica as my favorite song with this title.
1983 the drummer Jim Gordon attacked his 71 year old mother with a hammer, then fatally stabbed her with a butcher knife.
He was sentenced to 16 years to life in prison. He died in prison in 2023
Undiagnosed schizophrenic.
I don't know why, but I've had this song stuck in my head the last couple of days...and here it is. Too weird Man.
Sometimes the stars align :)
Well, that could've been a decent 3 minute song with all the fat trimmed away. I guess it was the booze.
You should watch the clip to this, which is from the z-grade "son of dracula" film - 1974: ua-cam.com/video/cfkHN_QxNcw/v-deo.html
It starts around 49:15 in there... with Keith Moon looning out on the drums...
Harry Nilsson is the only man that I paid a dollar to kiss.

Couldnt have put it better. Vocals are just screechy noise.
@@PipeMan1792 I've got one thanks, and boy did I need it.
