    My condolences on the passing of your mentor Joyce. I am sure she is so proud of you for all the things you are doing to spread the passion for sewing. I particularly appreciated the trick with the pencil for turning straps. Wow! Oh, and I realize I am underutilizing my serger!!!!!

    Love the special pencil turning tool idea. I really like finding sewing applications for items not originally designed for them. I also find it helpful to press the seam open on fabric tubes before turning them. It makes pressing so much easier after it’s turned right side out. I use wooden dowels inserted into the fabric tube to isolate just the seam I want to press open, so I can avoid pressing creases into the fabric where I don’t want them. I find that I can get dowels in diameters small enough for all but the narrowest tubes, which don’t need the pre-pressing step anyway. ❤️

    Sorry you lost Joyce. Buried my mom yesterday and I am being kind to myself. So glad to have this blog to watch today. Thank you, thank you, thank you for showing us this hem. I had given up on nice rolled hems. Another thing I struggle with is using the binding fit. It may feed the fabric nicely, but within a few stitches the fabric is moving off to the side.

    I am sorry that you lost Joyce, she was obviously a huge part of your life's journey.
    Brilliant tutorials on using the rolled hem and gathering foot. Would these work on a linen or cotton? Would you dare do the gathering of a skirt onto a fitted waistband of a dress? I am thinking of so many of the patterns that my girls and I like...but gathering is painful!!!! xxxx

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  2 роки тому +1

      Yes. I have done the gathering on cottons and linens. If you are using more bodied fabrics, I would just crank the deferential feed up to it's highest and you can totally do this onto a fitted waistband!

    I’m so sorry about the loss of your mentor. I just made the Meet you there dress and my fabric looks so much like yours. Ha ha. She was truly an exceptional seamstresses with the smartest sewing brain I've ever come across. I was very lucky to know and study under her.
      I prewash my rayons on cold cycle (I serge my cut ends before washing to avoid unraveling and to keep the yardage from getting yanked of it's grainline) and then dry on a regular cycle. Once the garment is made it gets washed a cold cycle and air dried.

    Sorry to hear your sad news Whitney. Can you advise what I can do with my Skye shorts as when I walk you can see the other side of the fabric which is plain? Love your makes

      I have the same issue. Because the leg is so wide and swishy, it will show a bit when you walk. One way to fix that issue would be to draft a facing for the hem. That would help with both sewing the curved hem as well as then having same fabric around that area on the wrong side.

    Love the Holyoke, but haven’t gotten yet. Just as well, didn’t realize I’d be getting two other patterns this week. ;)

    I wish we could get fraycheck in Australia but we don't :-( Can you gather on the overlocker with the regular foot?Sorry to hear about Joyce.

      You can gather on an overlocker with a regular foot if you are just gathering one piece of fabric. You won't be able to gather one piece to another in one pass like I did here, however.

    I noticed you stabilized the Skye Shorts at the pocket openings using black interfacing. Are there any other areas you find critical to stabilize using strips of interfacing? You shared initial stabilization in the waistline area (directional sewing) and some serger techniques that can make constructing garments so much easier and be a real game changer for some. Isn't the initial cutting out of the fabric pattern pieces the most important part of dealing with rayons? Is making sure your fabric is perfectly on grain when you lay the pieces out also a critical step in sewing with rayon? It's where it all starts. If you don't get that right, it may go downhill from there. Luckily, it sounded like you were sewing with some very forgiving rayons so maybe it really isn't that critical with the ones you were using.
    These are simply some observations. I love your vlogs and learn things from you each time I watch a new one. Thank you for all the time you put into showing us everything you do to produce your content. I know there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes.

      You are correct that cutting out correctly is important for success with any project, but especially the shifty fabrics. I can definitely talk more about stabilizing areas (aside from the stay stitching) in part 2! I did interface the pocket opening on the Skye shorts.

    You don’t have a R on your stitch width? I have a Babylock Celebration serger and it has an R for the rolled hem width. Btw, the new tripod seems to work well, though I like it best when you get close up with your stitching. :)

      This one doesn't have the R, just a box around the rolled stitches section. I'm pretty sure the Evolution is older than the Celebration so they must have added that. That makes much more sense!

    Hello. Rayon question. You may have answered this already. When finishing rayon seams not the main stitching but the serging do you put new rayon needles in your overlocker for woven? This may be a dumb questions but the needles for my New Babylock is a jersey type needle.

      I do switch between a ball point needle (for my jerseys/knits) and a sharp needle (for my wovens) depending on what I'm working on. That's a great question!

    Hello Whitney, I am a bginner starting to sew the Francesca dress and would be grateful for your views on 2 questions:
    1) I will try to remove the tie-up straps and make them instead regular straps. I'm guessing this shouldnt be a problem?
    2) I wonder about the possibility to add balloon sleeves afterwards, possibly on top of the straps. The Zimmerman botanica dress, on which this one is inspired, seems to have exactly that structure (bustier with straps, plus sleeves starting on the inner edge of the strap). Would you have any advice, recommended tutorial, etc on how to do this?
    Thanks a lot!

      Hello! To answer your questions 1) turning the tie straps into regular straps shouldn't be a problem at all and shouldn't change the construction at all. 2) I do think you could add balloon sleeves to the dress, but it would require some creative thinking/engineering. I don't have any tutorials that come to mind on how to do this, unfortunately. Sorry about that!

    The ruffling tutorial was very helpful, Whitney, and timely. I recently purchased the ruffle foot for my Evolution and now feel confident to try it out. Thanks!

    So timely. I am wanting to do a rolled hem on a jersey knit dress (West Cliff faux wrap). Would this be an appropriate choice?

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  2 роки тому

      You could definitely do this on a knit. I would DEFINITELY stabilize it with the water soluble stabilizer so it doesn't stretch out. You may want to wrap your hems so you don't accidentally cause a lettuce edge hem (which is a really cute and totally valid option if thats what you're wanting).

    Is rayon always in need of ironing? Thinking of using for a travel dress. Thank you!

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  2 роки тому

      Rayon does wrinkle. I find that the quality of the rayon plays a huge roll in how much, though. Personally, I wash all my rayon pieces in cold water, air dry and then will through them in the dryer for about 5 minutes to release creases and that usually does it!
