  • "Nesting Time" by James F. Hanley
    played by “Sherwin's Broadway Orchestra”
    (Actually Sherbo’s Mont Martre Orchestra)
    Banner 937
    78 rpm record
This is a filtered version (using vinyl studio software) of a previous upload which I seem to have accidentally deleted. However, the "noise reduction" and overall clarity, I think, is truly remarkable. The original was virtually inaudible due to surface noise.
Sherwin’s Broadway Orchestra is only mentioned once in Johnson & Shirley (American Dance Bands on Record and Film 1915 - 1942), but not this record, initially. But when you go to “Duilio Sherbo,” the song “Nesting Time” is the flipside of the record mentioned under “Sherwin.”
According to J&S, this recording is by “Sherbo’s Mont Martre Orchestra.” They state it was released under Regal 937, but do not mention Banner 937. Apparently, it was originally released on the Emerson label (10361). They state, “Instrumentation and personnel unknown.” I can hear a trumpet, a long trombone solo, possibly a violin, and a ricky-tick woodblock at the end. They give the following recording information: New York, c. March 7, 1921.
I can find only a couple of references to Duilio Sherbo, mostly in discographies online. On the following website: www.worldradiohistory.com/Arc... , he is mentioned in the magazine, “International Musician,” a newsletter of the American Federation of Musicians, but only in passing as a member of the musician’s union. Sherbo is also mentioned on a website about the British bandleader, Lewis Ambrose (www.mgthomas.co.uk/dancebands/... ) but only in connection with Ambrose working for him in New York in 1922.
So, this guy is almost a complete unknown. This record was one of my father’s favourites when I was growing up, so I’m sure he would have been tickled to pink to hear it with audio restoration and discovering that Sherwin was just a pseudonym.
You can find out about the composer of the song here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_F...
