Television news station, news Radio broadcasting, Newspapers, telegrams, are few of the sources of information at that time. Plus Americans have several military bases the Philippines in the 50’s. News and informations doesn’t travel as fast as the internet back then but they are basically coming from the same resources with the exception of cellphones that now majority of the people in the world have access to.😀

I remember my father usually subscribe Readers digest, Times,and Newsweek magazine. From US.when we’re young back in the Philippines. I’m a Filipino and in 50’s we were so up to date with what’s happening in the world. Through correspondence too from the friends of my father.
i think in that period, when they say "the movies" they may not just be referring to the actual movies but also the newsreels that used to come with movies

I was born in 1949 and can read and write at age 5 so in the 50's we already have the Liwayway(a Tagalog mag) Bannawag(for the Ilocanos} and others for the Visayas and Mindanao and the Manila Bulletin and Manila Times newspapers...

Philippines was next to Japan in that era in economic terms. She was able to provide assistance to poorer countries in Asia and her education system was well regarded. You did not wait for the Filipino kid's answer to that. He said Most Asians get it from American Magazines, "Life, Herald Tribune, Time, Reader's Digest." Not just in the movies as the girl claims. Obviously most Asians read too as evidenced by Johnny's ability to answer their questions. As you can see when Johnny talks everyone is in attention and the host is always interested in what Johnny has say.

It’s a side effect of colonization. Look at the colorist issue that existed in the country since they were colonized and up till now. The society pushes European features (a high nose bridge, light skin, etc.) as a standard of beauty (look at the majority of their celebrities). Despite it not being a feasible achievement for them unless they have mixed ancestry or get cosmetic surgery. They grew up w/ those msg and have subconsciously taken it in. The younger gen does seem to address these issues more than the older gen; and they’ve taking up an interest in the culture that was there before the Spaniards came.
I think the ones that make a lot of noise are the ones that are insecure and want that external validation. Obviously, not all Filipinos are like that. Some couldn’t care less and just want to live their lives.
Maybe it’s also a way to see the brighter side of the country and it’s ppl considering the political, economical, and class problems ever since they’ve faced major corruption. It can put a damper in their perspective of the country since they live and experience it. So maybe seeing how foreigners appreciate the Philippines and it’s ppl brings back some hope or a more positive perspective towards their viewpoints. Obviously, again, not all Filipinos feel this way.
These are just some possibilities of why they do it. You’d have to actually ask those individuals since they’ll have their own answer.
