Did I just find a SHIPWRECK with my Chasing Dory underwater drone? Esquimalt Harbour (ROVCentral)

  • After many months of not using my Chasing Dory underwater drone, I decided to investigate a suspicious "bright" area in the water near Portage Park in View Royal, BC.
As the ROV hadn't been used for 9+ months, I had some concerns about the chances of success for the dive. Check out the video to see how it went :)

A 14' skiff is a boat that sank, not a shipwreck. But shipwreck definitely makes a more enticing vid title.

Not bad footage once you got it down and started recording. Did you use the lights at all?

I think I didn't in this video, as the visibility was pretty good that day. I may have used them in some of my other videos, but haven't had a chance to go deep enough where they were truly necessary.

i am looking at getting one of these. I read a lot of reviews where people had a lot of issues with the ap, the rov itself. how long have you had it? any issues? do you recommend?

I've had it since the kickstarter in 2019, but haven't used it very much. If I had a kayak or little motorboat I might get more use out of it, but just throwing it from shore doesn't guarantee interestingness. I guess it depends what kind of shoreline you have access to.
As for issues, there was the one shown in the video with the props. That one might come up again as the unit ages. I haven't had too much trouble with the app, except I wish it wouldn't enable the watermark on videos by default. The device itself is a bit underpowered for the kinds of ocean current we get around here on Vancouver Island, which can make it frustrating to control for capturing smooth footage. Overall it is a fun toy & worth the cost. If I had more money to spare, I'd consider upgrading to the Chasing M2 with the grabber arm (dustin dunnill posted his first video of that unit a few days ago, looks like fun), or a Blue ROV 2.
